gurps has pretty detailed rules and the tactical shooting book that turns it up to eleven but I don't think it has rules for groups or mooks? (haven't read much gurps tho, probably wrong) so any bigger shootouts will probably take forever
I'm a huge GURPS nerd. There are rules for mooks, but nothing for groups. Well, except for the mass combat rules, but they're for massive strategic engagements, and use a completely different system from the normal combat rules. They're also just not very good.
What good military based RPG rule sets does anyone know of? My friend's trying to do a modern war themed campaign and it feels really awkward working with the D&D 5e ruleset.
I'll go ahead and plug Ops and Tactics again, even if I'm like two sessions and five weeks behind on writing up my xcom game. It's got actual military equipment, statblocks for soldiers and such, Time Units straight outta JA2, caliber-based damage, and a pretty decent level of firearms lethality. Hasn't really got mass combat though. Also it bears restating that I personally think the way it uses time units (combat points, in its parlance) is really fucking good for allowing players an interesting amount of choice when they take their turn, as opposed to move/standard/full action.
Modern Ops is not an rpg, its just a straight wargame using Savage Worlds rules. However you could steal the stats from stuff and use it in an rpg no problem. It's got suplements out the bum too so you'll probably find stuff for whatever kind of campaign you want. Not to mention it being d20 based so other games are probably compatible.
i still want bacon to finish his damn stalker/metro pnp

Sort of like action points? Everything you can do on your turn takes a certain number of 'points', and you have a certain amount to spend each turn?
What do mean by time units? Sort of like action points? Everything you can do on your turn takes a certain number of 'points', and you have a certain amount to spend each turn?
Yeah, like in X-COM or Fallout 1-2. Seems like it would be a fucking SLOG to play on tabletop with all that shit, however.
Yeah, like in X-COM or Fallout 1-2. Seems like it would be a fucking SLOG to play on tabletop with all that shit, however.
Any game that tries to emulate the real world will be. Real life is fucking complicated, man.
What do mean by time units? Sort of like action points? Everything you can do on your turn takes a certain number of 'points', and you have a certain amount to spend each turn?
Exactly that, yeah. Humans have 15 combat points per round, and you spend em on actions. Movement's 1 CP per five feet, firing a bow takes 5-7 CP depending on how heavily you pull, throwing something costs 5, aiming and shooting a gun takes between 7 and 9 depending on how big it is, holding the trigger down in someone's general direction takes 3, and so on and so forth. There's a chart. A lot of feats reduce the CP cost of actions, especially for weapons and reloading.
Yeah, like in X-COM or Fallout 1-2. Seems like it would be a fucking SLOG to play on tabletop with all that shit, however.
There's definitely an acclimatization period, but so long as you keep the chart on hand and so long as your players do good bookkeeping and write down what it costs for them to take actions, it plays relatively smoothly. Counting to/from 15 seems to be easy enough in practice.
i still want bacon to finish his damn stalker/metro pnp
That was croguy and he said that he kinda lost motivation for it
I'd run a Stalker game but i know jack shit about the universe and I'm in the middle of another game
Anyone know a game I could use for a 70's to modern time setting?
Anyone know a game I could use for a 70's to modern time setting?
Savage Worldsssss or GURPS or d20 modern I guess? but I only know that it exists :v: serious: you should specify what exactly you're gonna run. Just a regular-ass game set in the real world, more or less?
Anyone know a game I could use for a 70's to modern time setting?
Really really REALLY depends on what you want. A sci fi game? A spy thriller? Supernatural stuff? A time period is not enough to give games for.
Savage Worlds can go weird wars from Roman times (like hundred of years throughout the empire), world war 2, vietnam, and the super far future have a nice succession game if you feel like playing for 10 years.
Don't forget Feng Shui!
I wanted to say Feng Shui, but I have no idea whether the dude isn't looking for a realistic system as opposed to Hard Boiled shenanigans :v: Feng Shui is dope tho
I wanted to say Feng Shui, but I have no idea whether the dude isn't looking for a realistic system as opposed to Hard Boiled shenanigans :v: Feng Shui is dope tho
oh, yeah ok d20 modern is basically like straight up D&D in the modern world, it's the exact opposite of realistic, fyi
Urgh, remind me to never join a campaign where a player "identifies" as a furry again.
oh, yeah ok d20 modern is basically like straight up D&D in the modern world, it's the exact opposite of realistic, fyi
ah I always wondered about it but wasn't interested in it 'cause I don't really like d&d, I guess I was right does it like have fantasy monsters and shit too? cause if yes I guess that's pretty cool but still you should just play shadowrun or something instead :v:
ah I always wondered about it but wasn't interested in it 'cause I don't really like d&d, I guess I was right does it like have fantasy monsters and shit too? cause if yes I guess that's pretty cool but still you should just play shadowrun or something instead :v:
yeah, it does One of the core settings is basically WoD Hunter, except with more high fantasy monsters and shit. Beating down goblin thugs in the hood and secret multi-billionaire beholders.
Urgh, remind me to never join a campaign where a player "identifies" as a furry again.
That's always a red flag
Urgh, remind me to never join a campaign where a player "identifies" as a furry again.
I hear a story coming on. Please, continue.
yeah, it does One of the core settings is basically WoD Hunter, except with more high fantasy monsters and shit.
At that point, Shadowrun is a straight upgrade in every way, unless you like d20 THAT much.
unless, say, you want a game without cyberpunk or a sensible dice system
Urgh, remind me to never join a campaign where a player "identifies" as a furry again.
Are we talking about a certain someone who's name rhymes with "Dirts?"
unless, say, you want a game without cyberpunk
why, chummer?
My group played d20 Modern straight up for a decade. For the most part, we didn't use any of the "D&D Monsters invading the modern world" settings either, or we used the stats and parts of stuff to make our own stuff. We was just action movie heroes versus various levels of crazy shit. The various books and settings were toolboxes for us, nothing more. Ah, it was grand. Goddamn Dex heroes.
Really really REALLY depends on what you want. A sci fi game? A spy thriller? Supernatural stuff? A time period is not enough to give games for.
Either spy thriller or supernatural. We're running both types of campaigns at some point.
Either spy thriller or supernatural. We're running both types of campaigns at some point.
Spycraft 2.0 is probably what youre looking for. I've had fun the couple of times I've played it.
Savage Worlds might work but we've also considered home-brewing Call of Cthulhu. We have two campaigns lined up. 1. A 1970's spy thriller where we need to fight an evil genius. 2. A more modern campaign where a small group of strangers travel around the United States in hopes of destroying an eldritch cult.
