In last night's SR session we all became millionaires, our employer got his face shot off upon leaving the building, we had to hold off a swarm of random gang assholes who were supported by a sniper and mortar fire, our wizard knocked himself out casting too hard, Croguy and some of my drones got wrecked by a mortar, and then the sniper tried to flee in a sports car, dodging everything fired at him but the RPG and somehow survived the wreck, so we're dragging him to a safe house for a good old fashioned interrogation. We also befriended a samurai. [editline]22nd February 2015[/editline] Oh, and we looted a cyberdeck, so along with my RCC and control rig I am a master hacker (once I have the skills)
I wonder if The Legend of Zelda series (and I suppose a more levelless video game-y) style kind of progression can work well in roleplaying games. Where most upgrades aren't just another +1 to a roll or stat, where upgrades all do something and require more of a trial to obtain.

It'd take some effort, but it could work. Although a lot of the shit you find in Zelda games are basically +1 to a stat. Especially heart containers.
Only heart containers and the swords, really. Maybe you could count lifting upgrades but that's about it.
Depends on which game. In the original especially, a lot of the things you get are just upgrades. Upgraded boomerang, upgraded arrows, two different sword upgrades, the skeleton key, both rings, the upgraded lantern, and of course heart containers. Anyway though, that's going kind of off topic. It certainly can be done, but assuming the GM will be completely in charge of whatever new abilities the players get, it will take a lot of effort on the part of the GM to personalize that for every individual character. Also when it comes to puzzle design, you'll obviously have to go a completely different route than the puzzle design in Zelda games. Ninety percent of Zelda puzzles would not work at all in a tabletop RPG.

Puzzle design is the biggest thing holding me back from making my own campaigns. That and sloths.
and I entirely forgot I was playing and watching adobe premier tutorials and played league
You need to turn the ping noise back on.
his back leg got eaten up by a preposterously lucky burst fire
No luck, just skill. There's a reason all the girls are into me. Ace pilot status.
You need to turn the ping noise back on.
I would in a heartbeat if I could edit its volume it's deafening but if I lower firefox's overall volume I can't watch videos
Anything involving Cthulhu is overdone
I always found the idea of CthulhuTech to be interesting though. Lovecraftian horror has always felt too impersonal to me, and it's too grim and depressing for my taste (defeated the cultists? YOU WERE CULTIST WHOLE TIME YOU INSANE). But apparently in CthulhuTech there's a small chance for hope and actually winning but still manages to be bleak. Except I heard that CthulhuTech sucked after it got a lot of controversy involving depicting rape and religions very poorly or something. And also making the human-controlled parts of Earth seem very boring and monolithic in culture.

I'm currently running a game with it, about 5 sessions in. Personally, I think it works really well. My player doesn't even like the series, and he's enjoying himself.

Same with Third Era Middle Earth, the biggest of the bads is already fated to die by someone else's hand. As it is written, Link must defeat Ganon.
It doesn't really, but when has that ever stopped fans from making what they want.
Well there are also the bosses of any of the dungeons. Surely they could be badass enough to fight not-Link! Or the non-Ganon final bosses from, for example, the Oracles games (my favorite in the entire series)
All I know is pixies, lesbians, and Frozen.
so just lesbians then?
After a closer look as the rules for vehicle speeds in Shadowrun 5th ed, I've discovered it's possible to get into orbit with a nudge from magic, some cyberware, a sports car and a ramp. [editline]22nd February 2015[/editline] Without the spirit assistance you can only manage a measly 6.9km/s, or about Mach 10 for people who don't like metric.
