Run Tomb of Horrors, just to show you are the most unoriginal GM they'll ever meet.
Oh darling please Tomb of Horrors is so second edition [editline]2nd April 2015[/editline] In regards to DMing just work on your improv skills because no prepared material ever survives contact with players. Or run an adventure path module or something. What system are you running?
I'm gonna be dm'ing for the first time this Tuesday. May God have mercy on me.
I'm sure you'll do fine, I dm'd Dungeon Delvers a few months ago despite having less than a year of RPG experience and never dm'ing before. Things turned out fine. Just remember, as long as your players are having fun, all is well. Even if it seems like they aren't, they could be having the time of their lives as sometimes it's hard to tell.
Does that include, say, shooting beams of vague undefinable wizard energy, or just normal everyday things like fire and lightning.
Both. The energy is aspected, if you will. Fiery wizard energy, or lightning wizard energy. Other popular options are acids and ice.
Now all you need is playable pixies and I'm set.
We had a tier to create your own race. If you can track down the guy who bought it and convince him, your dreams will come true.
We had a tier to create your own race. If you can track down the guy who bought it and convince him, your dreams will come true.
I've already created my own race, the no-hundred metres dash. I hold the world record for it.
This is becoming more and more of a problem, as I can't give them mega hard content fit for a group but I don't want to give them easy stuff, any ideas on what I should start doing from now on? And when I say they are far apart, I mean the characters are at the point where they'll probably never see each other again.
I had a game like this before. Half the party ended up going through some pretty traumatic shit and as a result, they ended up totally evil or at least not good. The good half of the party decided to hunt them down and as a result I decided to make two games out of it, and each player had to have two characters. We alternated between good and evil sessions. Granted I trusted them enough to not be biased shits. The evil characters sort of froze to death in a blizzard that killed everyone but the bard, who then went crazy and ended up being slain by the caravan than found him half frozen in the snow after he tried to kill them too. The good guys ended up sacrificing themselves to stop the big bad evil cult who were opening a massive portal to the plane of chaos. The evil characters were also trying to stop the same cult, but only because THEY wanted to be the ones who killed the world.
Hey guys. New to this thread, but not to D&D in general. I've played a 3.5e campaign for a year 6 years ago, and am currently playing a different 3.5e campaign with a group of friends, that has been ongoing for the past 3 years. My question is, can I play D&D with people over the internet somewhere? Our sessions are only once a week, and I want to try other settings or classes.

For character sheets, there's a few ways to do it, like form-fillable PDF character sheets or the in-built character sheets in roll20 or websites like myth-weavers or just using a shared excel document over dropbox or google drive. For communication you can use a skype call or a voice program like teamspeak or mumble.

There are plenty of games waiting to start, only most of them are planned to start a month or more from now. And those that are not full, have discussions full of people asking to join, and I've never understood how I can get to play on that site.

I've never "joined" a game on roll20.
This thread has people starting up games semi-regularly.
I guess I'll just stay tuned. If anyone sees this and doesn't mind, PM me if you want to start a game.

Tonight on a very special episode of XCOM... [t]http://i.imgur.com/L6VPWj4.jpg?1[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/yQnoaq5.jpg?1[/t] Our operatives enter the third dimension. By which I mean we ran a quick and dirty playtest to see how the game would handle without a grid, wargame-style. The verdict? Really well, actually. After a moment of acclimatization our only issue was with, well, the quick and dirty nature of the terrain, so things should only get better once I start whipping up proper tokens and setpieces. Being able to leave the constraints of our mat behind is rather liberating.
I killed one of my player's characters. I don't know what to do, he says he doesn't want to play the campaign anymore because he put too much work making his first character. What do?

Also characters potentially dying is just part of the game, you win some and lose some.
tell us how it happened first
He and his partner lit a ship on fire (mind you, they were actually stranded in a small raft then rescued by said ship) so one jumped in the raft which at the moment was tied to the ship, he was set to 0 hit points by one the crew mates who followed him, the other member was below deck and fired a cannon, killing the crew mate, the entire ship then exploded due to the gunpowder stored in the ship getting lit by the fire.

Why'd they start a fire though?

They were stranded at sea on a raft, their only hope of survival being a passing ship that happened to pick them up? And then they lit said ship on fire after being rescued by them. One PC tried to escape and the now-dead PC stayed inside on the Gunnery deck. What did they think would happen? Why did the light the ship on fire? Characters die, it happens but it can be satisfying or sour the mood. If a random Goblin or Orc cuts a hero in half in a random encounter it can suck, but if the Character gives their life in a heroic way that pushes the story onwards then it's hard to complain.
Yeah that's pretty dangerous, dying isn't exactly unexpected there. Why'd they start a fire though?
They're chaotic evil. One of the crew mates was part of a now completely gone organization that was slowly eradicated by one of the players because he failed the initiation to join them and had his hand cut off, so he wanted revenge. I thought about bringing the one back to life, as I could say some evil god was angry at the other evil god that led to all this pish posh happening and he could bring the player back as his champion but that kinda seems like a cop out.

They could have at least waited until they were back at a port. Then they would have had less of a chance of dying due to self-inflicted stupidity. Also the ship likely would have been less crewed, especially at night because the sailors would likely be at a bar or something.
