That or templates for every possible item you could pick up. It's nice in video games, but highly impractical in pnp games.

I wanted to see if anybody had done it before and too see what they did right / wrong... I guess we'll find out if it works or not!

Which makes it completely impractical in real life.

It's quite a simple solution, though, and in my current experience, not very difficult at all to track. (Considering we are talking about a mission based game rather then free-roam.)
Make all items rectangular, then you only have to define length+width, which is easy.
Basically this.
actually shit yeah youre right never considered just having blank rectangles of varying measurement with the item name on it or something. Still doesn't seem very great for a game played in person.

An extra one can help for very tiny items, and etc. It also allows much easier load-outs and easier storage of your items. Visual inventory systems are also fun! What about the "place and go" issue? Very simple - symbols.

Was able to get my cousin to walk down to my house and take a picture of my character sheet. Ended up being a very fun game tonight, and we all went out to Applebee's afterwards. Having friends is great.
Shadowrun, where a 45 second gunfight in a McDonalds can take 5 real world hours.
That's nothing, we're coming up on 20~ hours for a 9 second raid because half of us go AFK when it's not their turn and everyone gets at least two phases per turn.

That is a disadvantage to playing online. Tactical gameplay might speed my game up, but once the maps and minis come out, most of my player's roleplay brains turn off and it becomes a game of whack-a-mole. It's it's on the board, it's gots to die.
Half of the people we talk to end up dead anyway
Literally only one person has died that you didn't murder.
Literally only one person has died that you didn't murder.
Two, suicide doesn't count as us killing him.

Do some rough sketching for common/in use items, let the players shuffle them around physically, boom. Proper miniatures and terrain and all that fanciness is nice, but there is a lot to be said for a minute spent to sketch something on a post-it note and trim it down to size.
Just started playing this a few weekends ago (5e). Pretty fun game only part I dislike is character creation.
only part I dislike is character creation.
It's like the most streamlined DnD char gen yet. Also, I want to play DnD as Chaotic Evil in a party of various goods. And have them try to kill me at every moment, because they are prejudiced bastards, and not because I did anything evil.
It's like the most streamlined DnD char gen yet.
dunno if that's his opinion on it, but imo that's exactly what makes it bad
I'm kinda tempted to run an Eclipse Phase game centered around Gatecrashing, if you're not familiar with EP it means basically you're a Stargate team going through wormholes to explore exoplanets, but instead of the best of the US military you're just some random goons with a gun, a spacesuit and a deathwish being paid to do it.
dunno if that's his opinion on it, but imo that's exactly what makes it bad
Go FATAL or go home, then.

Wrapped up my Dark Heresy campaign tonight, seven months and two long lasting PCs died. An entire sector burnt, but the surviving PC has been promoted to Inquisitor. Worth. Moments like this are what makes GMing worthwhile.

tonight in Rogue Trader the players get a battlecruiser, raid a Necron tomb, nearly all die to a Wraith all in good fun
End of session I was at 0/15 wounds, -10 critical to my head, -8 to torso, and -4 to my left leg, 12 fatigue, I lost 9 toughness and fellowship, and I burned a fate point and my suppression shield was destroyed. Apparently, when I'm literally unable to see anything within 10 meters of the other players, and I get horrible feelings when I'm within that area, I should just stick nearby. Also doing encounters planned for the whole party with 3 of them gone isn't a smart idea, but that goes without saying.
