So I decided to roll History in my D&D session. My paladin gets a natural 20 and by decree of the GM, receives the entire GM-side lore of the place he was recalling, about 8 paragraphs worth. My paladin's head was bleeding shortly after from data overload.
also our sorcerer basically got one shot by a goblin archer never go -1 CON when your hit die is a d6 guys
Pfft, that's nothing. In my day, we used to have -3 con, and d4 hit dice!
Pfft, that's nothing. In my day, we used to have -3 con, and d6 hit dice!
-3 con, d4 hd, but VASTLY greater amounts of power so that it didn't make a difference after level 5.
Not when you can end encounters with a single spell for most of your career!
yeah too bad you can't
yeah too bad you can't
Sleep at level 1 does the job pretty well unless your GM throws constructs or undead at you from the getgo, but there are other spells on par with that that do the job.

Why would you ever use sleep over color spray?
feng shui is fun
Why would you ever use sleep over color spray?
Not everyone is comfortable with their sexuality.
>using magic Haha silly mages. Why use magic when you can knock people unconscious with a sap.
feng shui is fun
2? I love the first one, but it has Problems (especially when compared to the fuckload of rules lite systems that popped up since)
2? I love the first one, but it has Problems (especially when compared to the fuckload of rules lite systems that popped up since)
yup
Why would you ever use sleep over color spray?
range that's about it
Was running kingmaker, I'm kinda thinking of saying fuck it and coming up with my own stuff. It's way more fun to improv than to pause and look at the planned encounter. Maybe do that for other knowledge checks as well. Make the knowledge skill much more interesting, get players more engaged, and I have to put in less effort.

After we left the fort and started heading towards whatever big city, the GM rolled a random encounter for us: an adult silver dragon. He then said he was thinking about diverging from the planned shit to base an adventure around the dragon we found. We never had a second session.

Might be worth looking at how they do it if you're interested in doing something similar yourself.
So you all died?
No. The GM disappeared. And then one of the other players recruited Elowin to GM for us. THAT was an interesting introduction to Pathfinder.(A story I've told before, I'm pretty sure, involving a giant mechanical dragon that turned out to not be real and a spider with 8 monocles.)
Wait serious question, is there a place where I can play these type of games online? Also, which game would you guys suggest? I'd really like to start playing but I have no idea where to start.
Wait serious question, is there a place where I can play these type of games online? Also, which game would you guys suggest? D&D 5e is probably one of the easiest games to start with.
Yeah, ofcourse there is. The majority of people in this thread play online. Almost everyone uses Roll20. D&D 5e is probably one of the easiest games to start with.
Will everything I need to learn the game be on there or do I need some other stuff?
Will everything I need to learn the game be on there or do I need some other stuff?
You usually need the pdfs/books of the game you're looking to play, some systems are free online legally. If you're playing online that's pretty much all you'll need but a group.
Will everything I need to learn the game be on there or do I need some other stuff?
Nah, it's basically like a chatroom with a basic virtual table. There are basic rules available for D&D 5e legally for free. They're basically like a demo, so they're kind of limited, but good for getting a taste of what it's like. There's also Pathfinder, which is also extremely popular. It's more complex, so it's a bit harder to get into, but you can also do a lot more in it. Additionally all the rules for Pathfinder are available for free. Their core rules are pretty similar, so if you decide you wanna switch from one to the other, that probably won't be very hard.

For online play, people either go with roll20, or some other way of communication over the internet - I know people play via Skype, IRC, I played a few campaigns just using the Steam group chat and using Dropbox to synchronize the character sheets and books and such, and there's Play by Post too, but that's really slow and tbh not really as cool As for a starting game, there's really no good answer to that. I discovered Savage Worlds a while back and I love it, so I'd suggest that (it's uncomplicated, plus it's somewhat of an universal system so it doesn't really matter what kinda setting you're into). There are some free RPGs on the 'net, if you don't wanna spend money just to see if the hobby's for you (well, technically, most RPGs are free if you know where to look [wink, wink] not that I'm advocating that or anything!). You're probably best off just jumping into a game that seems interesting and asking the Game Master/other players to explain any unclear stuff that comes up. Hell, I started playing RPGs a couple of years ago (I wanna say three?) with a homebrew Fallout RPG, which was basically a translation of the game's rules to tabletop - so I already knew what all that stuff was and how it worked, more or less. I ended up rewriting most of the system because it was kinda terrible. Now I'm a GM, on my...fourth campaign? (granted, one of these was kinda short lived, but hey!) It's really easy to get into, and once you do, you might not wanna go back to video games again :v: [editline]21st May 2015[/editline] goddammit that's what happens when you effortpost, beaten a thousand times :v:
Thank you all for your help! [editline]20th May 2015[/editline] A friend of mine actually has the Player's Manual for D&D 5e
It's also worth noting that pretty much all stuff for Pathfinder (which is similar to D&D's 3rd edition) can be found here: www.d20pfsrd.com [editline]20th May 2015[/editline]
There's also Pathfinder, which is also extremely popular.
