Every now and then tell your players to roll a perception check that they can't win. Start casual but each time you do it, speak more frantic and paranoid than the last. Act like it's really something terrible, but never tell them what it is.

If they roll high and notice 'nothing', they'll become super paranoid when you're sitting there smiling about it. If they roll low and notice 'nothing', they'll become fucking terrified when you sit there with a fucking smile on your face after you tell thing they "don't notice anything."

My players are so paranoid that each time they see an npc, or get in an area they don't know about they roll sense motive/perception all the time. Not only that, they doubt every NPC/character there is, even if that character has good intentions, and quite obviously so. Also any online games in pathfinder that needs a player? I DM every sunday, but would like to play some as well.
I'm so sick of my players acting paranoid because it prevents me doing anything fun at all We're playing Rogue Trader, and I go through a lot of effort to stat out all this cool xenotech loot that the party gets because they're ACTIVELY LOOKING FOR IT, then never see any of it get used and it just breaks my heart Yea, the Yu'vath stuff was probably going to eat their souls, but they never knew that IC, and between that they got hella eldar gear (both varieties), and even the fucking game-breaking necron relics haven't seen use beyond the one starship sensor booster after the session they got them, save for one or two more generic items and none of the unique things Or when I had to spend something like 30 minutes convincing the party that no, maybe the arch militant alone shouldn't be going to the boss fight with 10 npc mooks as support, because ooooh we're scared to go into the basement of doom there might be bad things there

A bit too much. It didn't help that last session, or the first session of the new campaign I'm dming, after they knowledge checked (just barely) to know what plant enemies they were meeting (not any abilities or powers or so). One player metagames and looks up the bestiary page and corrects me about a thing I changed about the enemies. Sure that has nothing to do with paranoia, but they were so paranoid to go in to the place I've made and did like 30+ perception checks and the metagame didn't help either.

And I did die in that fight, to be fair.

Eventually the DM told him "you think he's lying" about every roll, because apparently his character is very suspicious of everyone.
It's best just to treat perception and that as passive skills and use the party's average rolls as a guideline for what they notice or not, unless they're actively searching a room or interrogating someone, and then it's more fun to roll it where they can't see the results.

People in the Imperium respect a leader that goes in and kills shit. Clearly, if the Arch-militant faces baddies with the mooks, then the crew will eventually look up to him as the true badass, and not the Rogue Trader. And who knows what rumours of cowardice will spread about such a Rogue Trader...
I could've taken em chaos a shit
Unless you rolled only ones to hit and tens for damage I can quite confidently say you would not
Unless you rolled only ones to hit and tens for damage I can quite confidently say you would not
My faith is my shield and I have 5 fate points
And who knows what rumours of cowardice will spread about such a Rogue Trader...
Rumors can't leave a planet if you extirminatused it afterwards.
Are you trying to say that exterminatus isn't already standard operating procedure? Uhm. Hmm. I.. I'm not so sure you're doing it right if that's the case.
Rumors can't leave a planet if you extirminatused it afterwards.
Unless of course it's your own crew shittalking you while drinking their meager pay away at port
Rumors can't leave a planet if you extirminatused it afterwards.
Rogue Traders don't have that kind of power. They have a lot of power, but not enough for Exterminatus beyond exceptionally rare cases.
Rogue Traders don't have that kind of power. They have a lot of power, but not enough for Exterminatus beyond exceptionally rare cases.
I'm sure this thread has a few exceptional people who would love to get their hands on a thermonuclear device.
I'm sure this thread has a few exceptional people who would love to get their hands on a thermonuclear device.
It's great, I fully recommend it.
I'm sure this thread has a few exceptional people who would love to get their hands on a thermonuclear device.
Nuclear devices are totally attainable, but thinks like World-killers and Virus Bombs aren't, and for good reason. Not even the Inquisition gets to fire those without filling out three kilometres of paperwork. And they still get investigated.
I'm sure if they tried, with 10 ships the party could make a planet uninhabitable Not quickly, though, and I'm pretty sure they have more than enough enemies already, and we've yet to have a situation so out of control as to even remotely require it
Rogue Traders don't have that kind of power. They have a lot of power, but not enough for Exterminatus beyond exceptionally rare cases.
There's pretty much nothing more exceptional than a player character.
There's pretty much nothing more exceptional than a player character.
In Only War, you're a throwaway grunt in a war the Imperium literally forgot about.
In Only War, you're a throwaway grunt in a war the Imperium literally forgot about.
Only if the GM is too lazy to come up with interesting things. And even then you're probably still the most exceptional throwaway grunts in the war.
In Only War, you're a throwaway grunt in a war the Imperium literally forgot about.
You're a throwaway grunt who's probably going to do all kinds of crazy shit that a throwaway grunt should never be able to do. Thus, you're pretty much the most exceptional throwaway grunt.
You're a throwaway grunt who's probably going to do all kinds of crazy shit that a throwaway grunt should never be able to do. Even a shitty inquisitor's shitty loser retinue is more important and better than you.
But at the end of the day, still a chump compared to any character from any of the other rules. Even a shitty inquisitor's shitty loser retinue is more important and better than you.
More important? Maybe. Better? Nah, got bigger guns.
More important? Maybe. Better? Nah, got bigger guns.
Better psykers and access to Exterminatus through the Inquisitor, so yeah, bigger guns too.
So, in today's session, 2 people died. One of them got thrown off the top of a very tall tower, the other got better.
More important? Maybe. Better? Nah, got bigger guns.
The odds of you becoming anything exceptional is a million to one. The Imperial Guard has a lot of millions.
Yo, I'm lookin' to get into this pen and paper stuff. Anybody running a game and okay with new chumps?
Are you interested in fantasy? Sci-fi? Anything in particular?
