Also since ArmA was mentioned, you can't forget

Not to be confused with the subsequent pile of ape feces the bears the same name.

If you turned the ghost recon cover 90 degrees to the left, you'd see the operation flashpoint cover :v:
doom is tactical as fuck

anyways, never gonna forget OFP:CWC and resistance.
and im never gonna forget arma1
and arma2
and arma3
arma 1 was an unoptimized piece of shit
but it was still great until it fried my graphics card...
anyways can someone recommend me all the rainbow six games which feature an actual gun model? i know that the earlier rainbow six games dont even draw a gun model in the first person view... that's a big turnoff for me cause part of the reason why i play shooters in the first place is to satiate my need for gun porn. don't matter what kind of fps it is, it's gotta have a gun model that has reload animations and all that shit.
also same for ghost recon. i got graw 1 installed and it's actually pretty good... if a bit insanely difficult.
http://www.blackfootstudios.com/ check it out.

Rainbow Six 3 Raven Shield, has a metric fuckton of guns, all have models and reload animations but it's quite difficult if you don't know what you're doing.
You can get the gold edition for about $6 on Steam.
Dude, Doom probably made up for 85% of my childhood memories.
I recommend getting the mod Ravenshield 2.0 if you play RVS at all. It adds a lot of pretty neat features - enhanced weapon skins, player models, effects, etc... They're also developing Project VI, which is basically the successor to 2.0. I've been following it for quite awhile now.

I'm still playing Ghost Recon. I haven't even got started into the campaigns yet, just been dicking about on Firefight missions. I also tried Recon, I think, the one where you have to get to the extraction point without losing any members of your section. As soon as we leave the starting area, boom, Bravo team member down, mission failed. Why can't more games be as unforgiving as that?
If anything, I find respawns a lot more frustrating than dying and that be the end of it. I rage like hell in Call of Duty and Battlefield, never do I rage in Ghost Recon or Arma 2.

Best game of my childhood. I was stuck on the first mission for months but then once I actually figured out what I was doing I would never stop playing it.
Back when i first got a computer, I had i think the original rainbow six.
I had no idea what i was doing. I think i might crack on with it seeing im older and wiser... Once i get my computer problems sorted out.
are there any pre-graw ghost recon games for the PC that are either in third person or drawn the gun model?
GRAW sucked shit for the consoles and on the PC it's really boring and your squad can be complete fucking idiots sometimes
Man, S.W.A.T 4 was the shit. I still never managed to finish it, something always came up and I always forgot about it.
The thing I loved about it was the realistic situations and locations. Never a high tech military base, but shit like a gas station or apartments or something. Always loved games that were grounded in reality like that and had levels based in locations you are in every day. Damn I wan't to install S.W.A.T 4 again

There aren't, no. OGR and its expansions have no weapon draw, only the crosshair, and Ghost Recon 2 (third person) is only on consoles.

that sucks to many balls to count

almost all of the OGR mods were amazing, though
i absolutely loved the British SAS ones (there were like 5 SAS packs with varying outfits, ranging from urban situations to DPM camo to full-on ghillie for everybody) and every weapon came packed with amazing crosshairs that practically emulated iron sights. it was superb.

They're not in third person and there's no view-model for the weapons. However they're still worth every bit of it, I don't think that should discourage you from playing them.
Wait actually, I think there's a console command to get the old fashion 3rd person. There might even be a mod or something out there.
there's a console command for third person but it's highly impractical to use because you can't see over your character's head.

Ahh, nevermind then.
One thing I always loved about Swat 3 and 4 was the fact that there was actual rules of engagement. I've always wished Rainbow Six would have had the same type of ROE implemented into their games, but I guess it's different when you're a cop and taking down meth-heads vs. when you're a highly trained special forces operator killing terrorists.
mabye a nice indie dev will make something in the genre, and we'll notice it and say shut up and take my money.
But until then, we can only dream.
My dad has a copy of the aforementioned Operation Flashpoint game. Sadly, when I went to install it on my new PC, the CD key was missing...
True Combat: Elite is a tactical online FPS. It's community should still be alive, but it's died out slowly.

Doesn't look that bad actually. Reminds me a bit of Insurgency, which was a great mod in my opinion. It sucks that it's not supported or anything because it had major potential. These games aren't so much "tactical" as they are just realistic, but Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad is amazing too.
Ahh, memories of Rainbow Six, where I spent most of my time trying to not die.

Oh god just found my Prima guide for Rainbow Six

Time to find the actual game now
i have my prima guide but it's so beat up. I took it everywhere with me. gold edition rainbow six users ftw
Tactical Shooters still exist, the definition has just changed. It used to be games with some strategy, slow gameplay but fast paced CQB moments, and some real life tactics worked great. Now it's when a game's player characters have as much shit as possible attached to their vests, belts and weapons
Raven Shield was the last good Rainbow 6. Vegas was So-So but it was definitely no Rainbow Six game, and the original Ghost Recon/Desert Siege/island Thunder. Great game and Expansions. I loved playing the good old fashioned Terrorist Hunt in those, and Rogue Spear

Last thing I heard about Insurgency is, that the developers founded a company called "New World Interactive" and are developing Insurgency 2 as a standalone game on the Portal 2 engine. Also they have entered Alpha status and it is currently being tested by players, who played INS competitively
What constantly impressed me about SWAT 4 is how good the enemy AI and voice acting was at selling them as panic-prone, trigger-happy criminals and not typical shooter enemies. They would run off and lock themselves in rooms, Threaten hostages, Spray doorways in a blind panic and even surrender rather than try and fight.
For all the things the old Rainbow 6 games did right, Their lighting-bolt fast, pinpoint-accurate AI enemies that fought to the death never felt like one of them.
yeah but that part of swat 4 was insane. like you literally have to have either a lightning fast reflex or a non lethal weapon on you.
and these situations where it's them or you pop up ALL the time in that game.
really you can't go into swat 4 or 3 i guess expecting a tactical shooter. it's not really a shooter at all if you think about it because a shooter is kill first ask questions later.
swat 4 is quite literally more of a swat sim than a tactical shooter. mainly because swat teams run into this kind of shit the most, and moreso than any other kind of commando. also your main objective is to preserve life as much as possible. you get more points the less lethal takedowns you use.
i like using leg and gut shots to wound them. normally if i'm sticking someone up i'm always aiming at their legs. the first hint that they are going to fire i spray at their legs. they go down but don't die and you don't have to tie them up.
I love rogue spear. That was the best. I remember playing one of the first levels, where you have to infiltrate a plane and save the hostages from the terrorists. The Terrorist Hunt was also a fun gamemode.
There are a few first person shooters that i think really should be tactical shooters. I feel bf3, for example, has all this realism, and then it takes 10 shots to kill some guy. I dunno, maybe the maps might be too big, but I feel if it had a better weapon recoil and damage system, it would be a lot more fun.
Would Battlefield 2: Project Reality be counted as a tactical shooter? It's pretty tactical.
Also hilarious. Damn hilarious game. Nothing makes me laugh as much as that game.
Raven Shield was the shit.
