I'd say he is a gold dependant support, similar to someone like Leshrac
Both have good spells and won't technically need items to be good, but with no items they won't have the mana to do all that much. Necro's Q is very mana heavy and Leshrac burns through mana even faster.

Maxing Battery Assault first gives you the most solo kill potential, flares first is decent otherwise
Aghs is pretty much a must
Blade Mail is great if you're doing really well, otherwise Ghost Scepter and / or Force Staff help you use cogs without just dying

I never get Aghs but Necrobook 3, am I a bad person? I do pretty well if my team does not feed a singular hero and I can solo kill most carrys until team clashes. Also there is always an invisible guy in the enemy team when i pick him, so I dunno. I feel like I don't need that too much hooks, but I still feel bad for not getting it after all those comments

Nah Necrobook is one of the most useful items in the game. I guess it depends on your playstyle and the match, like pretty much everything in Dota.

If you're super good at landing hooks I guess not getting an Agh's is fine? It's still highly recommended because even after you hook someone you can hook them again or someone else soon right after. Necrobook is one of the best items in the game though so yeah.

Yea Mek is an amazing alternative to Vanguard, it gives almost the exact same benefits and much more for just 81 more gold.
you need mana to sustain mek though
so arcane boots would be needed too i think
Well I love mana boots on Clock, most of the time I go something like this: boots, bracer, mana boots, hood and mek (if there is someone like Zeus), finish the drum, blademail and scepter/necrobook rush.
I dunno, I like mek alot and vanguard always rubs me in the wrong way.
I always get Arcanes & Pipe on him, from there on it depends on what they have.
