You get 2x damage as normal, the Q is applied separately and is not doubled.

Yep. If I notice the enemy supports playing really well I always make sure to let them know (and my own, ofcourse).

I just won a game as Vengeful Spirit and everyone including the enemy team told me I won it for our team.
During the early game, I got our team three kills by roaming the map after farming up some pull camp gold. I warded rune spots and pinged them when they spawned.
The important part about playing support to win is that you can't sit back and let the carries make the decisions. We had a PL that wanted to fight instead of farm a free lane, so I gave him sentries (nyx assassin was dominating on the other team) and told him to go farm, so he did.
Since we had an invoker, I bought a medallion so we got a quick rosh around 10-15 minutes and got aegis up on our timbersaw.
I always had a sentry on our fighting positions, and always swapped my teammates out when they got caught by nyx, saving the fight and giving us enough power to push to win.
Supports are arguably the most important part of a team. They require the most awareness though, that's why team captains almost always play support.
Just make sure you take control of the game, and your team (and theirs) will certainly recognize you.

well it's cheap, easy to build, and provides other good stuff on top of a boost to health and mana
the closest thing is ultimate orb, which is one whole item, more expensive than the whole drum, and doesn't give the movespeed and attack speed components

I rarely use trap as Templar Assassin so I would rather it give me another passive or a unit target slow/silence.
Yes I too would rather agha completely remove my spell and give me a new one that would be the best possible outcome
