Because you're playing as a carry, and it's paramount to any carry. You are literally hindering your team if you can't last hit.

Both OD and Zeus need levels to be effective, and having an OD mid basically secures his farm and completely wins the lane against almost every other hero.

This has just happened to me, lost connection and theres no reconnect option in the main menu. If I get low priority for this I'm gonna be pissed.

Zeus plays a support, only coming near the lane to harass. Sure, Zeus needs levels as well, but the results of such a lane should be glorious. I got to try it out someday. Even if it fails in the laning stage of the game, mid game, Zeus will be running on a bottomless manapool.

I know some people like the change to Sniper's model, but I personally find it horrifying. The old Sniper looked like a calm, happy person, the new Sniper looks like a snarling creature, very unfitting for his voice lines and acting.

What hero [b]can[/b] do decently vs OD on mid? The only time I've faced an OD and got decent farm was when I was qop - and that was by maxing Dagger and never ganking but focusing solely on keeping him down.

Somehow through a long string of cancelling iccup and 4FC were the only two teams qualified for the final slot so they had a playoff which iccup won and now they're going to the starladder finals (Na'vi/Mouz/Kaipi cancelled, rox won't go for... obvious reasons)

Bloodseeker doesn't mind OD that much.
Kunkka could work due to OD's lack of sustain as they usually don't get bottle. Same might go for Luna, Fiend, Drow, right-clickers who can work without their spells to a degree mostly. Broodmother is one that can even domiante that lane.
Sting-focused Venomancer ?
I could see silencer work, given OD has 1 spell early to break curse, and OD without mana is one sad OD that can't proc Essence Aura.
Lich ? He can go down to low int, sac a creep and get full mana through that. Just waitout a bit and harass for free.
There are possibilities, however OD will always have a chance due to stolen int actually upgrading his own right-clicks, so there is really only sustenance, or rather lack of it, that you can abuse.
Mute system is such shit, girlfriend got her talking privileges revoked even though she was the one that had sexist jokes done to her all night and nothing has popped up for the both of us that the sexist people got taken care of, so just my girlfriend got muted and now the mute system is just making playing hard as fuck for us to communicate ganks and stuff with other people
Nyx is a good pick against OD, manaburn hits hard and carapace block a lot of damage. Loads of CC to keep him down as well.

Beastmaster. Even if OD does take his mana away, he can just straight up man-fight and bully OD out of lane. It's a common counter pick in pro games.

True, but level 1 manaburn won't do much, and levels 1-4 are when you are going to start rapidly losing your int, giving OD lasthitting and harassment power. Level 1 Manaburn will deal 14/21/28/35 bonus damage per 1 Astral Imprisonment ( level 1/2/3/4). It's not that much, sure, 3 = 100 bonus damage on top of OD's natural INT, but that's when he's level 7.
Nyx is very mana-hungry, going up against a hero who'll decimate your INT without innate mana-regen is, at least, very risky. Things can work out if you use the debuff to replenish more mana, but during that you are giving OD room to farm, which means he gets all the benefit from the lane he wanted.
Nyx's manaburn is actually % burn of mana gained from INT. it's 3.5 / 4 / 4.5 / 5 x INT. 1 int = 13 Mana
So it's 3.5/13 ; 4/13 ; 4.5/13 ; 5/13 total manaburn from pure INT-based manapool. OD gets 300 more base mana from Essence aura, which means it will make manaburn less hurtful to his total manapool.
Level 1 we are talking 1 manaburn per 28 seconds, during which OD will generally get some last hits, grab an emergency clarity or stuff in case he gets manaburned to 0 (which would take a while). He can even lay off Astral-Imprisoning until he has 3-4 levels in Essence aura, where he will rarely run out of mana.

It blocks up to 80 per instance which is in no way the same as a straight 560 damage shield. A 560 shield is going to save you when Lion fingers you or Mortred crits you, an 80 damage reduction will be meaningless. If you're playing someone with a mobility ability or a force staff, they probably won't be in the line of fire long enough to get 7 instances of damage but they will likely be in danger of taking 560 damage.
Blocking 80 damage 7 separate times is so totally different from just blocking 560 damage.
