That is what I'm saying. I don't like the whole colored space thing they've got going on. It doesn't make any sense.
Whoops, I misread the entire string of posts. I agree with you.

Ok so we got a brief look at the tools although they only showed them quickly they did not actually talk about them. Tomorrow they will be properly showing and talking about the tools.
You will get to properly understand the tools tomorrow but here are some quick gifs I made of what we got to see of them today.
Trees, animals and ships

Planets

Like I said they will be explaining how this stuff works tomorrow.
Well, it's as big as any other infinitely large procedural game.
This is a good listen you will need to start from around 22:50

If you have time listen to all of the No Mans Sky bit as these guys have seen all of the tools and spoken to Sean so it is cool to here them discuss their thoughts on them.
[editline]10th July 2014[/editline]
2 to 3 weeks from now Gamespot will be releasing a 2 hour interview with Sean Murray on No Mans Sky and they apparently have new footage.

July 10th fourth video (Reality check: The science behind No Mans Sky universe)
Cameron Robinson visits Hello Games to uncover the tools that built an entire universe
Last video is here: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/how-does-no-mans-skys-universe-actually-work/1100-6420893/ (I will change to youtube once it has been uploaded)
Good video. I just got a lot more excited about the game. I noticed how there are literally hundreds of different variations of the same thing; this means that there is, in fact, the possibility of billions of different combinations of planets with varying flora and wildlife. Something that I was honestly questioning initially.
Are those fucking sandworms?
Are those fucking sandworms?
Please let us use thumpers to draw them out and ride them.
That's really clever I think, it doesn't store the data, it simply is the product of math that the code does.
That's really clever I think, it doesn't store the data, it simply is the product of math that the code does.
If you are talking about procedural generated things, it's not that clever. People have been using procedural generation for a while now.

procedural stuff has been around since the 80s
The clever thing was the gif making robots. So they can art direct it a little bit.
Dark souls 2, gta 5, Soma, Hotline Miami 2, Serious Sam 3 and 4
these are all games I've been stoked as hell for, or are currently stoked for
but no mans sky? if its as good as it appears, I hope its industry changing.
Well, it's as big as any other infinitely large procedural game.
To be fair, do any of those also have procedural ships and everything?
The environment and asthetic is cool and all, but I'm far more interested in the level of interactivity with the various flora, fauna and landscapes. I'd like to know if there is any level of destructibility (small scale as in moving rocks, shooting down trees, walls etc. and big scale as in meteors, planet destruction), or if you can change an ecosystem somehow. I'd like for them to explain this in more detail, for now it seems like they're just showcasing the visuals.
The way they talk about resources, I'd wager that you'll be able to perhaps create mines and such for rare minerals, at the very least. Cutting down trees, I'm not so sure about that; in a future where everyone can get a spaceship, I don't think there is much use for wood anymore.
As for destructibility, you'll be able to destroy asteroids. Whether this has any function other than just being fun to do, I've no idea.
They've mentioned that, if you want to, you can hunt and kill animals, as well as cataloging them into what seems to be a database accessible for all players.
Considering everything is made out of voxels and that asteroids can be destroyed the game has the full capabilities already in place for proper mining and full destruction and the ability to break literally everything. It will be a case of do the devs want you to be able to blow everything up or mine into a mountain rather than is it possible.

One of the developers said that the game is built around exploring, not mining for materials and building. Most likely you'll be going down to planets and exploring bases and the like.

They have actually talked about already existing super mine systems the game will create so you will probably just walk around the existing mines and look for resources.
I'm really hoping there actually isn't any digging of mines in this game. That's my least favourite part of Terraria, Starbound, Minecraft, and loads of other games. Unless there's a fast or fun way to do it, like an enormous hand-held drill, or mining drones that work while you're else, or just firing down beams of death at mountains, I would rather find resources just through exploration of existing tunnels. All those other games have POTENTIAL for exploration, but it's bogged down by the need to stay in your hut digging away for hours on end, seeing nothing but endless grey stone.

Sean wants things to look futuristic and that is why he hates things like assault rifles in sci-fi games. This is why most things will be done by using the multi-tool as shown in the trailers so don't expect anything like pickaxes or even drills.

Well even if there was digging, it wouldn't be the focus of the game, but rather like a side activity. You wouldn't have to do it, but it would be cool to have the option.
The beauty of this game is that it doesn't force you to do anything, you can just walk around exploring the same planet forever if you want to.

Just as long as we don't get something like Starbound's Matter Manipulator. Technology with the power to remove and place matter via energy, and it would take an hour for it to slice a pizza.
Some updates there appears to be more info and I like it. It is also sounding like multiplayer confirmed from what I am reading.
Apparently there was a stream and there is going to be all kinds of info coming out.

Game Informer New Information List
Ok so this has now been updated after reading through the article again. If you don't want to know what the malevolent force is, don't read. So here it is:
There's a wildly abstract intro sequence inspired by the ending of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Not all players start on equal terms. Some starting planets will be harsh, some will have rare resources.
First point of interest on your starting planet will be your ship
Galaxy map has several zoom levels:
The most zoomed out one is a view of the entire galaxy with an imposing black hole in the centre. A small dot shows your location.
The next zoom level allows you to freely swoop through the stars, where you can scan stars to get more information about them, for example how many planets each star has, or any special properties like extra resources. If online you'll learn additional things like if it's been discovered, and what class of space station is there.
The next one allows you to examine the planets individually. If other players have already explored the planet, you get a detailed rundown of its points of interest. If not, then it's up to you to go and explore them.
Can see friends location and stats on galaxy map.
In game messaging system has been teased.
If you fly past another player, you might never even know it's a real person
However if you do see another player, it'll be the first time you realise what you character actually looks like, but you'll still just see their suit, not what's inside.
Money is called units, and can be earned from almost everything you do. Blowing up ships, gathering and selling resources, discovering anything new.
You will gather resources with the mining laser and grenades, and can only see resources in a special scanning mode.
Hyperdrive fuel and cargo space share the same storage, so while it might be good to take resources to another system to sell for more, you'd have to figure out whether it's worth it.
Trading posts are dotted around planets, and there is more than one type. Some might buy up resources, some might be specialised for specific upgrades to your suit and weapons, and not every store stocks the same inventory.
Shops have ratings that determine the general quality of goods they can sell.
If you see a ship you like, for example at a trading post, you can follow it back to a station to buy it.
If you start attacking other ships, then the station in that system will release the galactic police force on you, which will remember you and be more likely to attack unprovoked in the future. The same goes with the various factions, which respond based on how you treat them.
The general shape of space stations indicate the quality of items within, and multiple docking bays mean there will always be an open parking spot.
If you land in the docking bays in a space station, you can get out and browse tradable cargo or stroll down the line of ships to check out stats and prices.
What you can buy depends on who is there. Could see a ship you like and want to buy that just flies off before you get a chance
Some space stations look like Death Star or Borg cube, and can be attacked. Can't be destroyed because there has to be a space station in every system, but can damage them enough to lower their rating. No reward for doing so though, but you can be rewarded for attacking the police it sends out to attack you.
Upgrades to suit and weapon don't vanish on death
List of some possible upgrades:
Ships - Shields, laser beams, plasma shot, rapid fire shots, energy torpedo, wing (affects manoeuvrability), hull (separate stats to allow landing in toxic, corrosive, and radioactive environments), engine (general speed), hyperdrive (hyperspace jump distance), cargo space (split between cargo and hyperdrive fuel), cloaking
Suit - shields, resource capacity, jetpack (height and hang time), air hazard (separate stats for toxic, corrosive and radioactive environments, liquid hazard (length of time submerged in water, acid, and alcohol)
Weapon - laser beam, plasma grenade, energy shot, scan distance, scan type (certain things can't be scanned until this is upgraded)
Don't get any reward for killing creatures, so there's no incentive to wipe out every living thing you see, but you can if you want.
Malevolent force is a robotic army. They maintain the balance of the universe and patrol around on some planets. If you are just strolling around, they will ignore you. But if you start killing creatures or carving out resources and they see this then they will attack. So far there's a bipedal version and quadruped version. These aren't procedural, so you can learn how to deal with them. They will attack like traditional first-person shooter enemies, shooting lasers, strafing, and taking cover.
In ship combat, different weapons have different specialties. Lasers specialise in melting shields, while plasma projectiles do heavy damage to ship hulls. Torpedo pack a punch, but not as fast as others. There's no ammo to worry about, but you do need to keep an eye on cool-downs.
If you die in a ship, you basically just lose the ship and cargo, and have to save up for a new one before you can leave the current system. But you don't lose money or upgrades. So you'll just end up in a basic life-pod, and have to go to the nearby space station to buy another ship, or planet to get more resources.
So if you were to lose your ship in the centre of the galaxy, you can still bounce back from that. It'll just take some time.
Current estimate to get to centre is 40-100 hours. The minimum being for people who go straight for it as fast and efficiently as possible. Hello Games can adjust this before release though
There'll be portals to different random planets closer to the centre of the galaxy, in rare alien temples that you can discover. The one they saw had a central spire surrounded by a ring of portals to different places with two giant flying snakes circling above. Each portal requires a different weapon or combination of weapons to open. Can't take ship with, so need to gather what you can on other side and go back through the portal.
Regarding what's in the centre of the galaxy, this will be kept a secret. It'll be a nice moment for people, and Hello Games are hoping that they won't want to share what they see.
(other bits of info taken from the image captions) - Floating land masses will be rare in the final game
Currently, planets have a single biome across the entire surface
I'll be adding this to the feature list when I get back to my laptop. Also, there's loads of cool images, and the galactic map looks really cool!! I actually think I know everything I want to about this game now, and I'm seriously excited!!

Please note it says in the article this was recorded awhile ago so this build will now be outdated and he is using developer stuff to fly around.

Edit: Less gameplay and more aimlessly flying around a couple planets talking about how stuff works.
It would be awesome if players could build/buy space stations together or be able to build bases on planets, sort of like a small outpost you use as home base in which you can upgrade and expand as you put more resources into it or band up with other players.
They could be destroyable, even. But somehow i am doubting this will be the case. Fingers crossed though.
So there IS multiplayer?? I can tell my friend to meet me on planet: Fuckboy Omega45 and we can meet up and go on a rampage through the galaxy??
I think they said there would not be a traditional multiplayer experience on release but they would work towards it post release, and that it would definitely be a game that they would want to put work into a while after it has come out.
So question. If I'm on a planet, the game procedurally generates my surrounding area. Now, if I were to go STRAIGHT up into space, and then come back down to the exact area I just was, it would be different?

I'm gonna assume it stores terrain data for what's already been generated.

no because the formula is still the same
