New trailer!!
That giant fucking robot was awesome but I wanted to see it blow something up.
I'm gonna assume it stores terrain data for what's already been generated.
No, the genius part of the whole thing is the game stores nothing. As he explains it in maths there is an input, an equation, and an output. If you put the same input through the equation you'll always get the same output. The input for the game is the players position, it will put it through an equation to generate the world and stuff, and the output will always be the same for that position, because the input will be the same, creating the same thing at that part of the world.
Anyway, I have a question. In that video where he is sat down playing he explains how getting a build is so hard because changing one thing leads to many changes due to the butterfly effect in a way. How are they going to update the game with changes if when they change anything, everything else will change with it? As far as I understand it this means there can't be new content without something changing everything.

They'll probably have parameters in the algorithm that decide whether or not a planet has certain content. If they add new content, only the actual newly explored planets will get that content. Previously explored planets will stay as they were.
Another trailer this one is a little different than the others we have had. Also they finally used a different song!
The variety in creatures and ships for this game is just so great.

I will say it is a shame that npc's don't get out of their ships and stuff at space stations and land bases as it is kind of lame just having ships land at a point then take off again a minute later as it they was automated robots. All the amazing looking creatures and robots are great but I have a feeling the game is going to feel rather empty and desolate because it is void of any human life despite there being ships flying around all over the place and it could ruin the atmosphere. I want to land at a base or space station and have it be more than just a landing pad. It should feel like a service station on a motorway with people talking and trading or siting down having a drink for a break and stuff. Just to make things feel more alive as right now it just kinda feels so fake.
Is this game planned for PC release?

Read the OP.

I have a feeling this is just because it's a WiP, but also from a direction point of view, it's a bit worrisome for me PERSONALLY that the game looks like it will be more about exploration and wonder than interaction. Interaction with the world, interaction with hazards, interaction with your vehicles (buggy? wheeled craft? speeders?), interaction with your gear, interaction with NPCs, et cetera.
[editline]6th December 2014[/editline]
Also that it's taking the E:D style approach to multiplayer with the: "Eh, you might meet other people, but we're not going to incorporate any features into the game to encourage socialization or to make interaction with other players likely" (or even feasible).

I know what you mean it has shown to be that way from the start from how they talk about their game. At least out of all the games to take this direction the sheer capability for variety in planets, animals, robots, ships ect could mean they will do a better job for a core exploration game than most others. But either way it still is bothersome to me this is the approach they are taking I would love to see them do it more interaction based or hopefully build on it in the future considering how far they are from release.
So no city building then like in Hazeron?
I hope they add more than just that 1 cockpit design.
I hope they add more than just that 1 cockpit design.
We have only actually seen them get into and fly one ship and that cockpit looks like it would only work with ships of a similar shape. So hopefully the cockpit will be different for other ships.
Based on the PS4 debut video, it looks like ships come in many shapes and sizes with many different cockpit designs.
[editline]7th December 2014[/editline]
I really hope ships generated for NPCs can also be controlled by the player.

It seems like it's sort of like Limit Theory (Indie game made by one guy which looks fucking amazing). In that everything is basically just a series of formulas that generate the content, and then the Devs tweak that system as well as go in and manually do changes and additions to what the formulas have generated
Which is a really cool thing. It let's the Devs focus on very specific and minor details rather than spend a lot of time fleshing out a world to play in

I wouldn't get my hopes up - it looks like they are focusing on exploration, etc. Having a "base" with your stuff ties you to one place.

If you look at previous videos showing off the dev tools ships come in endless forms and they have said you can follow a ship you like to a space station and buy it.

News: Shaun said in an interview that music is also generated and different for each planet.
Music is 'procedural' too?
Holy shit, I love games that do that.
I still don't understand the whole 'procedural' word they're using, if it's a limited galaxy they're using, that means there's a set number of planets that are randomly generated. Procedural means that it goes on forever, I think.
Procedural just means that the content is extrapolated from mathematical algorithms rather than being done by hand.

It's a never ending world but due to the system they use, when the same input is given, it will always generate the same output... If that makes sense.
this game is still looking brilliant, I just hope they can improve the LOD system, the pop-in is really jarring

In the context of this game it's being used as a way of having a impossibly massive universe without having it be a insanely massive file size on a hard disk.
The universe will be the same for every player, but it generates everything on the fly rather than saving it to the disk when it generates. Also from what I understand the universe is also effectively endless and will keep on generating planets the further you go.
Disclaimer: this is what I've gotten from the videos and coverage of this game, so I might be wrong.
could you imagine if we got a facepunch coalition together, and sort of worked together to get to the center first?
Something SAO (first seasonish) where everyone is fighting for the same objective and that is to get to the center first and claim it as facepunch territory for the glory of garry!

but it wont actually happen because its a facepunch project
This and the fact we would all be starting out in random parts of the galaxy nowhere near each other and the fastest way to meet up to combine efforts would probably be convening in the center and that means our goal is already met.

Could be cool
if this was a MP game
oh shit it apparently kinda is
"“There is this thing, which I’m not going to talk about now,” Murray teased, “that is a plan for multiplayer and for people to have a more traditional multiplayer experience within the game, and that’s something that we’ll deal with down the line that is exciting but that is not what’s core to the game right now.”"

Hazeron flashbacks.

I know Hello are going for the whole "You won't even know other players are there" thing, but I could put money on the fact that a subreddit for meeting up in NMS would open the day the game is released.
so someone fill me in on this, is it supposed to come out on ps4 first and then pc later? and how long will it take to become a pc launch title? one year after the ps4 launch like most other games?
I thiiiink the PC and PS4 releases are going to coincide? I really hope that's the case, because I don't want to be second by any large timespan to PS4 users to explore this universe. :(

I bet the universes will be split. Its on time exclusivity, which is fucking pants-on-head retarded but w/e maybe they can do bugfixes and optimize for PC in that time. Start by fixing the pop-in, I say
Honestly, if this game has nothing to do other than exploring a vast, infinite universe-- I'd still buy it.
I do hope to be able to run into other players while exploring, though.
Words cannot explain how hyped I am for this game. I actually feel like there's no way it will disappoint me. I'm the guy who plays open world games just to explore, this is my dream game.
