No Man's Sky - "The indie game that stole the show at E3"

While I find exploring interesting, I think this would seem more like a simulator/movie-thing than an actual game since there doesn't seem to be a real objective, and it doesn't seem to have many sandbox elements - correct me if I'm wrong.
Still, this game is very innovative when it comes to procedural generating, so if the game itself won't be enjoyable for some, it will probably pave the way for similar games.
I bet the universes will be split. Its on time exclusivity, which is fucking pants-on-head retarded but w/e maybe they can do bugfixes and optimize for PC in that time. Start by fixing the pop-in, I say
There will be pop-in no matter what. It's just the nature of these kind of games. You can make the pop-in more subtle, but you can never take it away.
The hype train for this game will never back down for me. Even if it only comes out on PS4, I will genuinely buy a PS4 to play this game. Though I really hope it comes out on PC. I know the goal is to get to the center of the universe but I'm probably just going to find as many undiscovered planets as I can and explore.

The first sentence of the OP
No Man's Sky is an upcoming sci-fi multiplayer exploration/survival game developed by Hello Games for PS4 & PC where players are given an infinite procedurally generated universe to explore.
What they have shown so far looks great, but it also seems like there is a chance it might just be a collection of loosely connected parts that lack any real depth, like Spore was.

All I am really expecting from this right now is aimlessly exploring planets with a bit of collecting resources to buy new ships and killing a few robots and creatures here and there plus whatever is at the center of the universe and I am somewhat hyped for it. It is not much in the areas of real gameplay more get the coolest looking ship you can and have a fun time looking around planets but that is all I am really looking for out of it right now. If they was to add other stuff later on then awesome.
Yeah, I wonder what the end game is. I mean, I like discovering new planets and upgrading my ship, but only for so long. I hope there's some purpose to killing and collecting stuff other than just getting to kill and collect better stuff. I feel like this could possibly ruin the concept of the game and wouldn't appeal to a lot of players, but I'd like to see some PvP as well in No Man's Sky.
[editline]t[/editline] Come to think of it, the game that really made me wary towards 'aimlessly exploring and killing stuff' is Cube World. Damn, that game had so much potential but just got boring really fast because all you could do was kill, loot and explore.

As long as they have good LOD and Render Distance settings it won't matter for PC, finding a balance is important on consoles tho.
Any news on when the game is set to be released?
Any news on when the game is set to be released?
None at all. It may even be optimistic to expect a release next year the game is still very much considered in development by the devs. In interviews figures such as 50% done have been thrown around. They just like showing off what they have at conventions every now and then and as you can imagine this kind of game gets loads of attention from journalists wanting to cover it.

Bah. I was hoping to get my fingers on a space/planet exploration game soonish.
I've been trying to find a 4X/space game where you get to control different kinds of ships, without it being too complicated.
Here is to hoping that we get to control capital ships.

You won't find many 4X games that aren't complicated in their own way. I was ready to suggest Aurora until I read that part of the sentence.
So multiplayer has been spoken about by Sean and it is kind of what I was expecting but I guess you could say a little worse as I will explain below.
Basically each player is kind of running their own lobby that people can kind of walk in and out of. This means that should another player happen to be in the same area as you there is a chance they might join your lobby but at the same time a chance they wont so coordinating with players to meet some place might not work out. In other words multiplayer exists but works in way that you probably wont ever be able to meet people intentionally as it is going to happen purely by chance and rarely because of the size of the galaxy. that is what I mean by a little worse as before despite the sheer distance between players at least the idea of heading straight for each other might work but now even when you reach the same point it is not certain that you will be able to see each other but if you are lucky enough that the game puts you into each others lobby you can.
Sean says that they aren't going to have any way of letting you know you are crossing paths with a player when flying in space it will just look like another random space ship (no names hovering above or anything) but if you luck out and happen to cross paths walking around on a planet or space station you will know it is a player instantly because they look different from anything else in the game. He also said this is the only way (without looking online after people take pictures) you will know what you look like.
So yeah you can cross paths with players and see them but the chances of that happening is incredibly rare and even if you do the chances are you will have no idea it was a player unless you both just happen to land near each other and both get out of your ships.
(As some of you know Sean has spoken about doing something more traditional for multiplayer later down the line but at least for now this is what you can hope to expect. I will say that moment when you finally see someone will be amazing because you know what are the chances of that.)
Honestly as neat as this game is when it comes to multiplayer they seem to be doing the stupid indie bullshit of prioritizing the "artistic experience" over actual consumer wants and what would be fun.
Seems silly to me, and rather irritating in many ways
The game they want to make is a good bit different from the game the world seemingly wants, given SC and E:D.

People often don't know what kind of game they would enjoy until they're actually playing it e.g. the whole shoehorning GLaDOS into Portal 2, then people realising they do actually like Cave Johnson.
I just feel like the game's going to feel too limited very soon after release. After a few days, players will probably be like... "Yeah, but what now?". Except if they'll add some kind of major goal ofcourse.
Add a real-time 4x element and you'll give lots of boners to lots of people.

The goal is to reach the center of the galaxy. The developers said they are thinking players aren't even going to want to share what they find when they reach the center.

Yeah but so far all we've seen is animals slowly walking around, one short dogfight, and empty ships landing and immediately taking off again. I, and probably a lot of people, fear this may just be set dressing for a game where you don't actually do anything.
"Get to the centre of the galaxy" is cool and all but what exactly is the payoff? Will it be some dumb bullshit like Curiosity? Or a dumb portal to Earth like in Spore? What if I don't want to go to the centre of the galaxy? What else is there to do?
A game where you fly around to look at procedurally generated planets and occasionally have a fight will get boring pretty quickly to a lot of people. Look at Minecraft, most of the older playerbase for that left years ago because they never expanded on what you could do. People got bored of "Build shit out of cubes" and people will get bored of "Fly around a procedural galaxy".
A couple of new quick interviews.

That interview, while funny, is kinda depressing and un-hype-ing. Like most of the stuff he said no to are like what I (and I would think most people) would want from an open world space game.

Like if they also included industry and empires and balance of power in their world generation, it would multiply replayability and playtime by orders of magnitude.

I know what you mean there was a number of answers I was not happy with myself too.

I'm probably going to end up getting this game purely because it is going to be great for making new wallpapers.

Also although all the music will be generated if you want an idea of what 65daysofstatic (band for NMS) can do this is previous sci-fi music they have made.

It's worried me even further that the game will just be a "Fly around and look at pretty planets while occasionally getting into dog fights or mining"
*Concern*
given that their team is itty bitty and that they literally spent all of their resources coding procedural generation it shouldn't be that big of a surprise that there's absolutely nothing to do in the game
It's worried me even further that the game will just be a "Fly around and look at pretty planets while occasionally getting into dog fights or mining"

This has been my concern since day one. From everything I've seen they've got a neat universe to explore, but not much of a game. I've been asking "so what are you supposed to actually do?" every time I see gameplay footage. It's always just some guy flying around, maybe walking around, maybe scanning something, but that's really it.
From the sounds of it, the game is going to get boring really fast. I'm honestly quite disappointed, now.
The goal is to reach the center of the galaxy. The developers said they are thinking players aren't even going to want to share what they find when they reach the center.
Well yeah, but I don't really see a lot of players that are willing to do (boring) tasks to reach something they don't even know wether it's worth working for. I mean, it worked for Curiosity because it was a silly mobile game, but I doubt it'll work for a PC game.
I wonder if theres fuel.
What's to stop someone from just dead heading their way there?
here's a better question
how can we even tell where the center is? space has no direction.
