I'm pretty sure you won't physically see each other ingame. On all the sites the team described it as a 'paralleled' experience not a multiplayer one - like spore.
The FAQ in the OP implies otherwise, alas your statement shatters my hope.
So i just found there is Ground combat too!? This game has everything i dreamed of
The FAQ in the OP implies otherwise, alas your statement shatters my hope.
Yeah I've noticed that and it has thrown in some confusion because it contradicts the previous statements. I just have my doubts that this can possibly a single shard MMO with a huge potential market, regardless of how spread out. Like how he's sure that players will not be able to meet each other willingly because the universe is so big. But if you mark enough local planets FACEPUNCH OWNZONE I II III ect and help people locate it on the star map then people will eventually flock together and form higher organisation which I doubt this game could support too well. Like this:
5. Still, in a year when every videogame is becoming a massive online multiplayer game, it is notable that No Man’s Sky is speeding off in the opposite direction. Although everyone who plays No Man’s Sky technically shares a universe, it’s a big universe filled with big planets. “Even on one planet, if we had a million players, they would all start quite far apart,” says Murray. “We’re pushing people miles apart. We’re doing the opposite of what every other game is doing.” Instead, Hello Games wants people to think about how their actions impact other players. “If you shoot a bird, we won’t share that. If you destroy a space station, that seems really significant, so that space station is destroyed for everyone.”
So it looks like moment to moment gameplay will not be shared between players, only actions of particular note. So technically you could work together but it would be in terms of sharing information or working together to carve a path towards the center hostile station after hostile station.
I sure hope they release it for consoles and PC at the same time.
Like I said, officially it hasn't been said anywhere that synchronous multiplayer will be a thing, in fact the exact opposite has been implied. They've been very vague so there is still a chance, but they have said that it is basically some form of asynchronous multiplayer. The only places that have assumed synchronous multiplayer were fan sites, and the developers have taken advantage of this assumption. I suggest you update the OP.
I sure hope they release it for consoles and PC at the same time.
They said this will not happen. PC will come after console.

And what about this interview a couple of posts up
It’s your ship which defines how quickly you can progress between solar systems, so losing it would be a big blow. But if you’re lucky, you might crash land on a planet full of useful resources. “You perhaps find things that you can’t even make use of at the time and earmark that for yourself or your friends to cooperate with you to build yourself back up.”
How can you cooperate with anyone if you can't interact with them?
How can you cooperate with anyone if you can't interact with them?
"hey there is a load of X resources on Y planet - enjoy" As I had already covered in my explanation.

I'll update the OP when we get solid information from the devs. Most of the things debated here are based on rumors and vague assumptions at this point.

IMPORTANT NEWS !!!!!!! News tpye: Article/Interview Confirmation that it is possible to come across other players. Sean Murray (managing director of Hello Games)
"You can meet and get an idea of other players, but the universe is very vast, basically, so the chances of you actually coming across someone are pretty slim," says Murray. "We're not trying to make an MMO, or if we are, we're making a really terrible MMO, because everyone is spread so far apart."
What we really need is an IAMA on Reddit or somewhere to clear some stuff up.
I'm sure they'll clear everything up in time. Let's give them a moment to breath, they just unveiled the game after all haha. Though I agree an AMA on Reddit would be awesome, I'm considering doing a request for it.
Confirmation that it is possible to come across other players.
Just like it was said in the very beginning. I don't understand why people were confused about this.
Just like it was said in the very beginning. I don't understand why people were confused about this.
I think I will agree with people that at first it was quite vague and they mostly beat about the bush with the answer so it was not too easy to tell. Now he has actually said you can meet other players that at least clears one thing up.

Here. Also, that's the same quote I used in the OP, so I guess the people who were confused about this didn't bother reading the thread.
I think it will make coming across other players very exciting if it doesn't happen often
I think it will make coming across other players very exciting if it doesn't happen often
As cool as it will be I do have a slight fear of dayz syndrome happening when someone comes across a guy with nice shiny things and back stabs him for it on their adventure "why what a nice race ship you have there". With ships all being randomly generated you might just see someone with the perfect design for you. Also despite player encounters being rare I still hope they implement a text window so we can chat and not just stare at each other.

So the game IS properly multiplayer and it's not like Spore multiplayer where you don't ever see other players ever?
YES
So the game IS properly multiplayer and it's not like Spore multiplayer where you don't ever see other players ever?
Spore had multiplayer?
Spore had multiplayer?
exactly
I could see us doing some serious Sword Art Online-esque corps as permadeath is a thing, and it is our goal to get to the center of the galaxy, so it would make some really interesting online gameplay if we do manage to group a few of us together.
is this game going to be 200 gigs
is this game going to be 200 gigs
It's procedural so I don't think so
is this game going to be 200 gigs
procedural doens't take up much space
This game looks like one of those games that give you the illusion that everything is different from everything else like I bet you every planet will be the same and all of the wildlife will be the same and the only difference will be the colors of the grass, dirt and water It looks pretty cool and all but I want to see some real gameplay and not just presentation gameplay
is this game going to be 200 gigs
From Kotaku article:
"Everyone gets the same universe," Murray said. "It's just a really big universe. It contains every possible variation but it is the universe and it's the same for everyone. None of this exists on the disc, none of it exists in the cloud. It's just generated on the fly. When you get there it's always generated the same way every time."

This game looks like one of those games that give you the illusion that everything is different from everything else like I bet you every planet will be the same and all of the wildlife will be the same and the only difference will be the colors of the grass, dirt and water
From the same article:
Murray explains that their engine registers the skeleton of each creature and builds on top of it from there. So the scale of creatures will vary based all the usual options like color and size, but also on the muscular build that's placed on top. Front muscles, back muscles, etc. "But not only can we do that but we can have a male of the species, we can have it always be with a bunch of females, we can have little babies, we can have loads of different variation within that," Murray said. "In fact, something on that first planet that no one notices is that all the deer are slightly different color as they would be in real life, which is just a thing we get a kick out of."
and this applies to everything, the trees, spaceships etc.
a fancy explanation of how something works is just the illusion that i mentioned. spore and starbound is a prime example of this. granted, the game does look pretty promising but if you legitimately don't have procedurally created animals that will look entirely different to other animals on other planets then don't go lying through your teeth trying to say that you have this fancy procedural system implemented when all it's doing is just randomizing bodyparts from a pool of premade models and then slapping a texture on top of it [editline]19th June 2014[/editline] legitimate "procedural" effects have been misused so often that even using that word is a real kick in the face if it's untrue
all it is is randomised sliders on a skeleton.
all it is is randomised sliders on a skeleton.
True but this is better than the standard way of doing it with pre-made parts that it randomly selects from. A slider that allows morphing in shape and size gives you a bigger variety plus those sliders could be really big meaning really varied designs. You also have the fact they are using this system for basically everything where many games make models such as trees and the same model is just re-used over and over. At least with this the trees are all different in size and shape and if many different looking trees does not sound that great for me I quickly notice in a game if the same model for a tree is used if you are in a forest. Now forget the talk about trees and that they are doing this for everything. It might not be a super revolutionary way of doing things but it is a far superior way to other methods as it will give a much more diverse range of models before becoming repetitive.
randomised
procedural
