The Combat Shotgun like the Vlad, the Mando M4, and Handcannon is sidelined by the vast majority because it does not do the job better than it's predecessor.
It is still capable of getting the job done don't get me wrong, but it's still not good by any stretch of the imagination.
Rapid fire really is over rated if you ask me.

The damage potential of the Vlad is close to Super Saiyan 3 levels in close quarters maps where your shots can bounce but if there's no hallways or small rooms to lock down, the tight spread on the HSG-1 is too hard for me to pass on.

MK23 doesn't reliably headshot some of the tougher trash on higher diff, while handcannon ALWAYS does. It's why I prefer deagle to mk23 as a sharpshooter.
Off-perk though, mk23 is much better. Lower weight, higher clip, comparable damage. It's always part of my combat medic kit, along with a grenade launcher and a lever action.

Dunno if it's really the master race anymore now that a Handcannon weighs 2 blocks. The better damage and penetration for the low, low price of free if you know where to look has officially replaced the Mk23 for me.

I usually pick demo's M4 and M32 to have a weapon for killing trash if they get too close. And if there is a big group somewhere far away but no team mates near them then just fire your grenades at them. Never use your grenades if in a group and getting over run.
Or you can just go solo and use faked players mutator and right difficulty on KF-farm like I did a while back. It is a good way to gain over 200K damage per game if you go on long and hard difficulty with fake players set on 3 and can use your explosives well.
