Actually it also happened to Sniper Elite... keys were revoked without warning. You had to re-purchase the game...

It's a valid question, some series don't need you to play previous ones to understand the new ones (eg. Final Fantasy).

not many series that have this many entries are story dependent upon all of the titles

final fantasy, assassins creed, far cry, grand theft auto, etc etc

for most games with this many entries the title is basically the universe in which it exists, with each being majorly independent from other titles. in metal gear that's only partially true - while each story is distinct, a proper understanding of the story almost entirely necessitates playing all previously released titles

no you really kind of have to play the previous ac games to understand the later ones, there is an underlying story, especially in the first five. sure, ac3 has an opening cinematic that sums up the first four games, but that's not the same as getting to play through them all and experience the pain and love like everyone else.

this is the reason i'm playing through all the mgs games, i could have just started with like peace walker or snake eater and then waited for phantom pain, but i want to play them in release order to see the series evolve in both the storytelling and gameplay.

tl;dr you're a fag if you skip previous entries unless they are absolutely unrelated to each other like far cry, final fantasy, ___ souls, etc. just because you can quickly make a sum-up of the events from kotor 1 in kotor 2 doesn't mean you can really skip kotor 1, because there's plenty of shit not mentioned, and returning characters as well.

As the release gets closer and closer, there are going to be more people coming in here asking if you need to play the others. While it's a good thing more people want to get into the series, they could just read the OP.

they confirmed that the PC port will receive user MP3 support, which makes it the only current-gen version of the game to include it.

It also means my Rambo playthrough will finally be a possibility. I imagine it'll be like this
