To be fair, MG1+2 is summed up pretty well in MGS1 in the intel. Still, it's more worth it to actually play them and figure out how the series progressed
That'd be great if anyone actually read that and didn't just immediately start playing. Plus, the story has way more significance if you live it yourself rather than read about Snake doing it.
It's included with almost every version of MGS3, there's no reason to skip them other than laziness, for which the movie versions are a suitable alternative. It's only an hour and a half to watch both games.
I'm watching Peace Walker the movie and holy fuck the cutscenes are long. I don't remember them being this long in the other games.
Also I just realized that Chico isn't ever shown in TPP trailers
yeah, the summaries in MGS1 of MG1 and MG2 are more than enough. You don't really need to know "Shotmaker" to get the gist of those games.
What the fuck? Portable Ops maybe, but not MG1 and 2.
You don't have to PLAY them, but you need to at least know what happened. It's only Solid Snake's fucking origin story and Big Boss's actions as a villain which then inspire every Metal Gear villain henceforth, and is mentioned like thirty times in every Metal Gear game. Not to mention MGSV is going to end either right before or during the events of Metal Gear 1. Why bother, right?
If you skip MG1 and 2 then Big Boss is just some vague figure fetishized by Liquid and Solidus who you have no real reason to give a fuck about until MGS3. In addition, the existence of REX and any mentions of Outer Heaven are far less awe-inspiring and foreboding without the context of MG1 and 2.
Don't skip 'em, kids. At least watch the movie versions.
They can be skipped because summaries can be accessed in MGS1's menu. Good games though.

Fair enough, but don't just say "you can skip them" without mentioning to at least read the summaries in MGS1. How many people actually read those without being told to?

Chico was [sp]on that helicopter with Snake and Miller at the end of GZ, so he's probably dead or crippled[/sp]
Or if you're one of those crazy people, they're not showing Chico because Chico is Quiet
To be fair, MG1+2 is summed up pretty well in MGS1 in the intel.
This, honestly. I didn't play MG1+2 for a very long time (not until I had played pretty much the entirety of the rest of the series) and I had no problems enjoying the games and understanding the plot. Even if you don't read their "summaries" (which are actually quite long and comprehensive), MGS1 spells out all the most important details to you just through the character dialog.
Keep in mind too that MG1 and MG2 weren't even out in the west (at least in any proper, canon capacity) when MGS1 came around. We didn't even get proper English versions of MG1 and 2 until Subsistence many years later. Millions of people had no problems enjoying the series without MG1+2 up to that point. Not saying that anyone shouldn't play these games, but they honestly aren't absolutely 100% required to enjoy MGS.

to be fair [sp]he's sorta walking around on his own within that chopper despite the nails in his heels, so he is one hell of an endurant kid already[/sp]

Hence why the summaries are included in MGS1.
I'm not saying you can't enjoy the rest of the series without it. I'm just saying it's a really important part of the story to just flagrantly tell people to skip.
All of the Hideo directed Metal Gear games are integral to the overall story. Don't skip any of them.

he probably[sp]is still alive for big boss to feel bad about, no idea if he'll actually get a huge role in tpp besides gravitas tho
or he died for big boss to feel bad about, either way :v[/sp]

i did. i want the whole story, but after reading a summary and then playing through a bit of mg1 i felt watching a movie of it would suit my tastes more. i wasn't disappointed either, props to the people who actually played through the games.

Again, I'm not saying anybody shouldn't play them. I'm just saying that actually playing them isn't 100% required. There are equally effective means to learn the story they contained. MGS1, with its summaries of MG1+2 included, is still an excellent place to start the series (and is the place most of us long-time fans started at anyway).
Yeah, retro games like MG 1&2 are way outdated, even when they came out since they were on MSX2. They're still fun but I get why it's hard to get into. You pretty much have to use a guide at least once in both games.
Is there any way to experience the stories of the MGS Series without needing to play the games? My father bought a new Nvidia card and got a code for MGSV with it, and he's interested in playing it, but anything that needs a controller is unplayable for him, he's used a mouse and keyboard since Doom and he's never been able to play games with controllers well at all. So what I'm asking is if there's some way for him to watch the storyline of the series, or at least read a synopsis of it so he won't be totally out of the loop with MGSV?
Go ahead and don't play MG1+2, but you'll never know the amazing character known only as Running Man and how he's literally Kojima's favorite boss.
There's movie versions of the games on YouTube

KefkaProductions has the best compilation of all the games turned into movies to watch. It'd take several hours to watch, but it'd be worth it.
MG1 and 2 are clunky in places, but they're worth playing even if you have a walkthrough at your side.
Real talk, I wouldn't want a MG1/2 remake to reimagine the game a la Twin Snakes to MGS1. Just polish it up, make it less clunky and more pretty. For instance, being able to see what security level a door is so you know what card key to pull out, being able to record codec numbers in-game. Ghost Babel type functions could be good too, GB was fucking great.
I'm surprised there's no digital novel adaptations of MG1&2, you'd think they would've made something of them but instead they adapted Solid 1 and 2 and even arbitrarily changed plot details for 2. There's a lot they could expand upon or rewrite for it all but besides including them with MGS3 on the HD/Legacy Collection, you'd think the games didn't exist in relevance at all anymore.

There was that fan remake being made on the Alien Swarm engine that looked like it could be really cool. David Hayter was even voicing Snake in it.
Initially Konami gave them the go ahead, then turned around and gave them a cease and desist for some reason.
I have this weird as fuck problem where sometimes when I'm playing GZ with my DS3, pressing L3 to dash makes me use the codec/jump/switch items.
What the actual fuck.
fuck you kinguin i already have to wait until September 1st for my key so if there's a pre-load i'm fucked unless they change their minds
but I had to get the game for $40 because the title disappeared off their paypal exclusive sale for $28, and now it's back on there at $35
agghh

nah man, watch those parts again. [sp]he's scooting about on his knees, not standing up. and if I remember correctly snake even picks him up to move him onto one of the seats at one point[/sp]

I remember that. That was really shitty. And now with Kojima out of the picture we'll probably never get a proper remake of MG1/2.

[sp]I didn't notice the knees part I guess, but in the second scene where MSF get raided and Paz blows up, Chico's pretty casual about laying on one leg on the bench with the other foot down on the floor, and even seemingly gets up to his feet when Paz wakes up and starts stumbling around.[/sp]
Is Peace Walker larger than REX? It sort of looks taller but REX is a lot thicker
What the fuck, why did they leave the[sp] computer with Coldman? This is stupider than Naomi curing cancer then destroying the cure because it made a homosexual vampire invincible[/sp]

Someone mentioned an interesting point on the steam hub
Are you going to play with Reflex on/off? I feel like disabling it would make the game more challenging and fun
