Are you going to play with Reflex on/off? I feel like disabling it would make the game more challenging and fun
Isn't disabling it necessary for some S-Ranks? I'm gonna play on the hardest difficulty, but if it's enabled there I probably won't bother disabling it. Dominant strategy and such.

Speaking of, I still need to 100% GZ. I've only played the main story mission due to lack of time.
You can skip mg1 and 2 and poops
you can skip as many as you like, really
hell, you can even fit Acid and Acid 2 somewhere in there if you want to! And revengeance!
Ayy our MGS group on Steam grew over 50 members in the last few days. Here's a question about FOBs - the guy in the demo said action is 1v1, but what if one of your allies is defending your FOB and then you want to join? Does it let multiple people defend? Does it boot your ally out and let you join? Can you just not go to your own FOB if an ally is there already?

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic, but in case you aren't, Acid is a non-canon spinoff, and MGR is a spinoff that continues along Raiden's story and isn't directed by Kojima. So no, you actually really don't need to play those ones if you don't want to. You really shouldn't skip any of the main titles but no one is gonna strap you down and force you to play it I guess.

I'll probably start with it on, and maybe transition to off as I go. One of the most annoying things about having Reflex off in GZ is that sometimes enemies I couldn't see would straight-up see me through walls or through tiny cracks between objects, or would spot me from across the map, then it's INSTANT ALERT TIME WOOHOO. At least Reflex occasionally saved those runs from being total disasters.
It really feels like GZ/TPP was made with Reflex in mind anyway.
I just finished the peace walker movie but what really happens? The movie is paced like BB never leaves Costa Rica or Nicaragua but his dialogue suggests he spends a lot of time at Mother Base and gets close to Paz while trying to complete his mission
Can GMG please get TPP already? I'm not spending $80+ on a standard digital copy

The movie cuts out anything that isn't absolutely necessary, since the MGS games are long enough in cutscenes alone. BB flies back and forth from MB pretty often.
A lot of recaps skip far too many plot points, like that chronology posted a page or two ago, the Peace Walker one missed legit like every character except for Warm Chillyman
I've recommended people this series and always tell them to start at Solid
Mg1/2 are cool and all but they're heavily retconned and Solid 1 does a good enough job catching yiu up
Can guarantee most of you in this thread didn't start with MG1/2 and you came out olah
Can guarantee most of you in this thread didn't start with MG1/2 and you came out olah
I actually started with MGS2. I had absolutely no idea what was going on (and to an extent I still don't lolol), but the gameplay as so fun and the action was so cool. I had to play the rest.

I'm jelly. Next week I go in to sell my plasma so I can afford this.
I have this weird as fuck problem where sometimes when I'm playing GZ with my DS3, pressing L3 to dash makes me use the codec/jump/switch items.
What the actual fuck.
That's a problem with your controller, not the game. My friend has a DS3 that presses triangle when he clicks L3, so if he's playing GTAV and wants to activate slow motion while driving he just ends up jumping out of the car and dying.

A lot of Peace Walkers story is in the tapes you get before missions, with Paz's diary and mission report both being very important and and completely optional. It's a good thing they're also in Ground Zeroes.
I just realized my 3 week long vacation starts 31st of august. I did not even THINK about the release date of MGS V, I just chose dates where it won't overlap on any of my coworkers. Damn, my subconsciousness must have been controlling me when I locked the dates!
I know what I'll do for three weeks STRAIGHT!
I returned from my holidays and have to go through nearly 1500 posts.
Worth it. I can't wait for 1st september.
It's a real shame Mad Max will be sold for 50 bucks on steam because it looks fun enough to fill in the gap between TPP and Fallout 4.
Yeah, retro games like MG 1&2 are way outdated, even when they came out since they were on MSX2. They're still fun but I get why it's hard to get into. You pretty much have to use a guide at least once in both games.
You don't need to use a guide for MG1, MG2 maybe since it sometimes require you to to look in the manual for tap codes and certain codec frequencies. In MG1 everything you need to do is explained clearly in game, it's aged syprisingly gracefully as far as old retro games go.

Their design is solid (that wasn't intentional), they're just clunky in places. If they worked on fixing stuff like having to juggle key cards to open doors they'd be a lot more playable.
I think the 2D Metal Gear games in general are under appreciated, people prefer rooty tooty point and tranqy to fixed cameras and tapping on walls while running the other way :V

But it this only ever happens whilst playing GZ, that's why I have no idea what to do. I hope it doesn't happen in TPP.
solid 1 lit gives a description of everything snake has done up to that point idk why people insist on playing mg1+2 when their plots can be summed up in a paragraph with basically none of the details left out
If you don't play Metal Gear 2 you miss plot details the previous operations menu leaves out, such as how [sp]Gray Fox helped Snake out as his number one fan, which is pretty damn important in MGS1. Also in MGS3 The Boss' speech to Naked Snake before their final battle mirrors his own speech to Solid Snake before their battle,[/sp] but you won't get that reference if you didn't play the game.

I had played MGS1 as a child but only got into yhe series proper about 4 years ago with 2 as my first as well
It wasn't until I replayed 2 post one I learned how bloody genius it was.
On the subject of the MSX ones, there is an incredible amount of exposition about them inside Metal Gear Solid. Snake and Campbell talk about zanzibarland at length. It's easy to just assume the player is not a dummy and can piece together what happened, so gelling people they can't skip the MSX ones is silly
Also you can skip poops as well

POOPS might come up in MGSV. Also, this MGS1 artwork is pretty amazing.

Didn't you recently admit that you've never played those games?
The movie cuts out anything that isn't absolutely necessary, since the MGS games are long enough in cutscenes alone. BB flies back and forth from MB pretty often.
Nah, a lot of the missions are clearly structured as if they were one after another with no time to go back to base, was a bit jarring for sure.
Didn't you recently admit that you've never played those games?
I've played then both but finished neither. As any one in this thread can now I do by just fine, if not slightly irritating.
POOPS might come up in MGSV.
PooPs is noncanon, other than the fact that BB did go to that area between 3 and PW. If they were gonna mention it, it'll probably be way different (for example, I doubt that the storyline with [sp]Frank Jaegar[/sp] will carry over)

I'd like to think they did map first, then input the story and Motherbase stuff later. At worst, the chapters are when you're extracted and sent to MB.

There's only one thing from PoOps I consider completely canon. [sp]RIP Jonathan.[/sp]

You filthy scrub. Seriously though MG1 is really short and simple, a sweet little experience. MG2 is longer and more complex, plus the 9-grid radar system takes a little getting used to but the game's totally worth it.
