Since language is such a big deal in the game, I wonder how Quiet is going to fit into it since she can't or won't talk but is presumably still able to use non-verbal communication. The E3 2015 trailer also says they want to take mens tongues, maybe they meant it literally for Quiet
What characters should I be reading up on for The Phantom Pain? I've played through MGS3, but there are two other games that happen before TPP right?
I don't think I can learn everything, but I at least want to know significant events and characters.
I have a theory (minor possible Phantom Pain spoilers) [sp]It was specified by the preview event that there will be a mission in the game where you rescue the scientist who made Snake's bionic arm. To me, this is too good of a opportunity to introduce Dr. Pettrovich Madnar into the story to pass up. I also believe that the doctor we see in the hospital scene IS Dr. Madnar, and this is not a new theory, but it may also explain why Snake has a prosthetic 'claw' arm in the hospital scene. Perhaps Madnar was testing his technology on snake, or he was commissioned to build Snake's arm while Snake was in a coma. Who would be keeping Madnar hostage? It may be the Soviets, his own people, for committing some form of treason. Or it could be Cipher, or the Skull unit, keeping him hostage for helping Snake. Either way, if Madnar is a character in TPP, I'm going to shit my pants.[/sp]
I like it, but I think the doctor in the hospital will be Kio Marv- look at the similarities!

Balding? Large, circle rimmed glasses? Sure, he looks a lot older than he does in MG2, but that's probably one of the many retcons of that game.

Portable Ops is optional, Phantom Pain follows Peace Walker. Leaving you with only one main game to worry besides the prologue mini game, Ground Zeroes. Which should not be too hard to read about, seeing as how short it is
You will not know or be emotionally connected to characters like Eli/Liquid Snake because you did not play MGS1. Same for Ocelot, you have only played one game with him (MGS3).
But the direct story itself you should I assume, understand decently

I've played MGS1, 3, and 4. As well as some of 2 (never finished finding all the bombs). I just wanted to know about the events and characters leading up to TPP. Guess I should have just listed them all to begin with.

Could be that she has a notepad close by in handy when humming isnt enough, or sign language. I cant think of any games that have sign language.
How she is going to communicate as a unique in MGO 3 will be interesting, with the preset radio commands. I have a good feeling that sooner or later, she'll be made as a playable character. Same with DD.

Well, you should be fine then besides reading/playing Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes, but honestly they could be summed up as
Big Boss makes a merc base out in the sea PW, shit gets fucked up and he goes into a coma GZ. :v:

Kio Marv can't speak English.
And you can't just retcon that, it was a kind of a plot point. It was the reason for Snake meeting up with Gustava Heffner, who was kind of important.

[sp]Snake getting over having to kill The Boss and throwing away his headband[/sp] is kind of important too, I didn't even notice he didn't have it in Ground Zeroes until I saw that cutscene

[sp] The dude in Cyprus speaks with a Greek accent, it can't be Madnar[/sp]

Who says he's speaking English? For all we know, one or two languages might have actually stayed with Snake. And hey, if Snake can forget languages, maybe Kio Marv can :v:

I completely forgot about that- my theory's out, then, though I do note the similarities. Possibly the hospital scene will be the area where BB loses his nonenglish languages? I doubt it, but yeah.
It'd be a pretty interesting scene, too- "You're the doc that took care of me...I at least remember that. Thanks." "J-Je mi líto, že jsem to nechápu." "Snake, he can't understand you. Bring him in, but we won't know anything until we find a translator."

What if every buddy becomes a playable character in MGO3 and sideops? that's be pretty sweet, playing as DD. Hell, what if vice versa, and you can play your custom character in sideops? [sp]Or, since it seems you can play as Ocelot in MGO3, he can be a buddy in missions as well? That'd be a "hidden in plain sight" spoiler that Kojima would do.[/sp]

Well, [sp]they say the shrapnel is what causes the memory loss of his other languages, and the hospital scenes from the trailers don't have the shrapnel in him yet..[/sp]

[sp]I'm still under the impression that the shrapnel isn't actually physically showing, but that BB only imagines it is- after all, the eviler the actions you do, the larger the shrapnel grows, which isn't how it works in real life.[/sp]

[sp]Considering the size of it combined with the color clearly not being something normal, it's either a hallucination involved with some sort of injury there (since he wouldn't just lose his memory willy nilly), or it has something to do with those spikes emerging from the earth in a previous trailer, perhaps some abnormal object stuck in his head that grows out with time.[/sp]
[sp]maybe the shrapnel is prototype nanomachines[/sp]

[sp]I'm definitely betting that it's a hallucination (one that I'm sure psycho mantis uses to his own end with those spikes seen in the trailer)[/sp]
In more spoilerfree news, I'm wondering how many MG1+2 references we'll see in this game. After all, Metal Gear takes place only 12 years after this game, which really isn't long at all in terms of how the characters relate to the story. Hell, I fully expect to hear about a certain individual being the first Czech ice skater contending for the winter olympics, especially considering 1984 was the first year a communist nation was able to host the Olympics (Yugoslavia).

Actually, the Winter Games that Gustava participated in was the '88 games in Canada.
She actually met Gray Fox there.

Ahh, that makes sense considering she tried to elope with him in '89. Nevermind, then.
Speaking of years, though, I wonder why 1984 was chosen (other than the book reference). I doubt they'd specify as such if it didn't mean anything in what they plan for the storyline.

Most of Big Boss's games have their year end in 4.
1964, 1974, 1984.

Definitely a lot more deep-seeded than a reference. The attempt at becoming big brother on Zero's part is an obvious thing but there will no doubt but a lot more sinister shit than that present.

Big Boss's Outer Heaven thing occurred in 1994 IIRC
Seeing as I wont have a PC good enough to play Phantom Pain by the time it's out I decided to get 100% again but on PS4 this time. This game feels so weird at 60fps, I'm too used to playing it at 18-24fps.

I refuse to play GZ at lower than 60fps, it's glorious.

i first played GZ on the ps3 and that gets like 20 fps. shit wasn't fun at all.
60fps is an incredible thing and I can't believe all videogames don't strive for it
60fps is an incredible thing and I can't believe all videogames don't strive for it
I've never met someone who thinks that games should just settle for 30fps after I've had them play at 60fps. It's sad that it isn't completely standard for the industry yet, but it's great that Kojipro understand the importance of it.
Big Boss's Outer Heaven thing occurred in 1994 IIRC
'95, actually.
Solid Snake's games never really had a time placement theme like that.

The Phantom Pain should set the standard for other games that they can still be cinematic at 60fps. For christ sake, even The Last of Us Remastered ran at 60fps. There's no excuse at this point.

Maybe at some point, someone took Kio Marv's tongue - deprived him of the lingua franca.
