I'm already half way through chapter 2 of MGS4. Just pace yourself, each game takes about 9-12 hours from my experience. A couple of hours every other day and you'll be long done by the time of TPP, provided you aren't trying to 100% anything.

At first in my current MGS2 playthrough, I knew the cutscenes would drag on but never beat the game before so it didn't really bother me too much. Now I've reached E.E. and gotten back to the sedition pool, and not only get hit with a drama bomb but also get Rose trying to immediately call Raiden out on his empty room and heart when I try to save to cap off for the night. Jesus fuck. So I snapped E.E.'s neck and shut off after that.

I don't care what anyone says, Rose is great in MGS2. The fact that the la-li-lu-le-lo sent Raiden on a top secret mission that absolutely cannot fail and made his nagging girlfriend his handler is hilarious

So how do the patriots even run the world? Do they just send emails to people with the possibility they'll do their bidding?

I would assume The Patriots AI function in a similar fashion.

You nailed the reason Rose was there completely. She's part of the stress test on the Patriot's societal control algorithms.

I enjoy them without thinking about any of the sequels, because it's obvious that absolutely none of them were made with sequels in mind. This series has so many retcons and continuity problems that it's best to just not worry about canon at all and enjoy each game within the context of its own time.

Imagine how much more of a clusterfuck the plot could have been if they were actually a part of it.
