Half-life 3 won't be announced but the last parts true no matter what. Part of me thinks we'll never get it because Gabe knows full well nothing he can come out with will live up to the hype.
Then again I don't think Valve makes games anymore do they? (This is a honest question. I know they update DOTA and TF2 (I think?) but I haven't heard anything new from them in years)

Who cares about the hype? I think most people waiting for it are just starved for a conclusion to the 8 year cliffhanger.

Well, maintaining them still counts as making games for a lot of people, since they add new content and all. But okay, the last game they released was Dota2 in 2013, 2 years ago. That ain't that bad lol. Then again, when it comes to Valve officially talking about anything new, the last time was in Aug 2011 when GO was announced. They haven't talked about anything new since then. We only have leaks and second hand information.
Also, I don't think Gabe cares about expectations at this point. It's more about what the devs at Valve want, and they don't want to work on HL, at least not in the form the fans know and want.
And honestly, who would want to work on HL with all the expectations and hype around it? I wouldn't, because no matter what it'd be a disappointment.

But like... can the ending really be as satisfying as someone would hope? The plot was good at the time but after seeing several stories take similar themes and whatnot I can't help but think it would just be kinda "eh".

I'm gonna be completely honest here, I don't give two fucks about HL3 anymore.
Valve has had many opportunities to say [i]something[/i] regarding it, yet they chose not to. Of course fans are gonna be disappointed by it if it comes out eventually. Maybe if the game came out a few years ago at best, fans would be fine with it, but now with all this "hype" circulating it there's no doubt in my mind that it will disappoint the hell out of HL fans.
Yeah HL3 might be pretty hyped up if it gets announced, but how much do you wanna bet that hype will stay once people realize it's not what they were expecting? I'm sorry to say but Valve has had many chances to impress me and the world and they failed. I've moved onto being hyped over games that actually have info available to the public surrounding them, such as Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XV, just to name a couple.
Now you might go "Oh but those games have been in development for a long time too!" Sorry to break it to ya pal, but those games have at least had the decency of being given public updates now and then. Even FFXV, with its 9+ year development cycle, still has more hype surrounding it than HL3 has every truly had, especially in recent history!
They kept us hanging for too long with no words whatsoever. Why bother grasping for straws when you can move onto better things? Especially if games like Doom and (potentially) Fallout 4 are being shown at E3? If Valve isn't gonna say jack shit then they might as well cancel the damn game. If they've truly moved onto new things then they should have at least had a final word on HL3 just to shut everyone up.

I think a few people are still banking on the idea of Gabe making a surprise appearance like he did when Portal 2 was shown during Sony's conference back in 2010.
Me personally, I've given up all hope on a new HL title so it doesn't bother me either way if a new HL game gets announced or not.

- 2009 L4D2 at MS presser
- 2003 HL2 and Source
- 1998 HL

portal 2 was not announced at e3, it was through the ARG months before it
hl2 was announced in a magazine ad
I specifically said for PS3, I know it was announced before that.
