I love the film grain, gives you that irradiated post apocalyptic feel. (and dare I say it, even makes sense since you're looking through a camera and not a windshield)
got some sweet gameplay footage

After waiting an hour I finally got into a game on the missile mode, complete stomp, someone on their team went 24-0 with some gun none of my mechs have. Most teammates I saw was one.
Eh.
so i just played my first game after doing the tutorial
jesus fuck its so hard to see anything, its like bad company 2 but worse.
mechs and walls look the same, and the constant dust and fog dont help at all.
I haven't had a problem visualizing anything myself but the FOV and lack of internal cockpit drives me absolutely insane
if you had trackir or some kind of in-cockpit support (and maybe RT cameras so you can see what's going on behind you) it would give you so much more situational awareness. your fov is like 45 degrees and you can't see jack shit in terms of what's going on around you. I'm 100% sure I can fire at targets and look around at the same time.
Mech combat is retardedly easy too. The trick is to hit targets and then dodge away. There's like a 25% chance they'll actually chase you because once you retreat past the halfway point on the map (at least on the missile maps) they get wary of ambushes and lay off so you can heal and go right back to destroying them
plus the TOW missile is incredible when you hit somebody with it. it can drop any mech down 50%+ health and then you can just pepper them with flak/AR fire. When you jump in somebody's face as an assault, they're pretty much done for
But tagging along with a team is the best. It's impossible to fight two mechs at once so when you're paired up you can tag team targets like no other and become unstoppable

but this little motherfucker right here won't work

edit:
yay, I got it now
Anyone know how to fix

I cant figure it out.
define "old" because for all i know it could be a year old with decent high specs.

did they take down game servers? i'm only finding 3 west servers and like 10 east servers.
Old, like 4-5 years old with only 2GB RAM, Radeon HD 4800 and core 2 duo
Just figured out that pressing 1,2,3 changes your items, even though the shield bubble does jackshit.
Combat needs more opportunity for player skill and tactics. It feels really way too spammy right now.
dodging?
I got a code to enter the beta, then later they sent me another code saying that some codes sent out earlier weren't valid. However, my first code was valid, and so now I have this back-up code just sitting here. Idk if it'll work for someone else but here it is: UVY65-UUQMA-T3DB4-NHREA-MHX8F Hope someone can use this to get in.
It seems that they added more servers now, sweet.
I also signed-up like forever ago. Maybe if I start bitching in this thread I'll get a key too?
Awesome. Just got a key, too. :downs:

Thanks for that! Redeemed.
I'm not sold on it, would be disappointed if I paid for it
And that really is about it. What other tactical options do you have besides looking at the enemy and holding down mouse click?
There is no management of mech sub-systems, no locational damage or the ability to damage limbs or sub-systems, and there is no way to manage heat besides walking behind a wall and standing there for a few seconds.
I've only been playing it for a day and I'm already bored of it. It's just so shallow. It's a fantastic idea, but they've just made a FPS with a fancy mech facade. They could have done so much more with the mech idea.
well, ever since they announced the game it was already known that it'd be a faster paced mechwarrior without the learning curve and all the button setups, so i don't know why you're complaining about it now.
Its a deathmatch mech game.
Its a deathmatch mech game.
That's too broad and nice a term for it. The fact stands, and it's one that I realized after watching all of 10 minutes of gameplay: Take away the pretty HUD and it's just a generic run of the mill FPS.
Its pretty much an oldschool deathmatch game except everyone is a clunky mech. There are a ton of customizations for your mech, which is cool. If they added more gamemodes beyond shoot enemy till they explode, it would be much better.
A battlefield-esque gamemode would be pretty fucking sweet.

I'm still thinking hard on various levels of realism. This game is the perfect base for so many playstyles, but thinking about that massive joystick/control center thing that wants to premiere with hawken in mind doesn't have me excited for something this fast paced. I'd think it would be a massive hindrance compared to a mouse and keyboard or simple game pad. I don't want it to be big and slow ala steel battalion, but I'm still convinced I'd enjoy a slower, more methodical, hulking tank feeling game mode and/or serverside option
While I actually like Hawken in its current state, I agree that it is only a mere fraction of what it could be. Hell, I'm even thinkng perma-death. It sounds silly, but hear me out; you have one mech, and you can customize and upgrade it like now, but when you die, you lose it. Bam. It seems that perma-death really makes players fight to save their life, not just take the enemys'. Currently, dying has no setback other than a number on the scoreboard.

cool idea but way too huge a departure from the current gameplay
personally I'm fine with the solid, robot-themed shooter that we have now
Yeah, I'm just throwing ideas out there. I still like Hawken as it is, though.

Except for horrendous optimization, never being able to find a server, and ~tactical film grain~.

there's already the missile gamemode which pretty much is a smaller scale conquest.
Had a round or two of TDM just now, t'was very fun. Of course I mostly go 1:1-1:2 because my FPS hits the deck every time I press a button, but I did have a few good rounds too, like 1,5:1 :v:
So far, the mechs I like the most are Bruisers and Sharpshooters. Sharpshooter is pretty good for landing solid hits from afar, and the Bruiser does a great job at medium range engagements with the Hellfire missiles.
