do they still have those silly deployables from closed beta that are ridiculously powerful? for me all the fights started to devolve into: opponent places turret and runs away just before dying and it kills me
Haven't ran into deployables being such a problem. The only thing people have unlocked is the bubble shield which not everyone uses (aside from the turret if you have the rocketeer mech unlocked, which again not many use). Most of the time either one smart guy is popin' shields all the time, even I forget I have my own.
Why is this game so much fun? I can't stop playing it. It's Blacklight: Retribution all over again. This influx of great-looking f2p games is fucking insane.
i agree that there are quite a few very good f2p games coming out recently, but dear god, blacklight retribution was fucking terrible
i agree that there are quite a few very good f2p games coming out recently, but dear god, blacklight retribution was fucking terrible
It wasn't the best FPS but for a F2P title it replicated CoD pretty well. I got about 30 hours out of it.
Its kind of funny this game has a shit tonne of excellent style a feel But to me it kind of feels like Neotokyo - just more of the same in a (very pretty) new skin and style. The gameplay is almost exactly like old arena shooters, except the base movement is much slower, but you have the ability to quickly dodge/get to places. And only one or two wepaons (the rest of which must be unlocked by leveling up your mech, whcih can take a very long time). Also matches are way to long for what is basically, deathmatch on a small map with 8-12 players. I don't need to be walking around for 15-20 minutes just constantly dieing or killing when the game space and gameplay is that small and tight. Still fun and I love the little flavor this game has, but when you boil it down it's basically just arena deathmatch, a game genre I got bored of years ago.
It's open beta now, anyone still playing this? I've played 3 matches so far and I'm really enjoying myself.

The control point stuff at least creates an objective, if a shitty, boring one.
i'm gonna go ahead and bump this thread i really hate how much the devs hyped up the whole entire "create your own mech" feature, only for it to cost actual cash to make it feel like your own
i'm gonna go ahead and bump this thread i really hate how much the devs hyped up the whole entire "create your own mech" feature, only for it to cost actual cash to make it feel like your own
In the end it's all cosmetic too. You don't get anything outside of the weapons that are given to you as you level up.
and it's pretty much unattainable to unlock better different mechs without paying for them
and it's pretty much unattainable to unlock better different mechs without paying for them
I said this in the MWO thread, but it will take you at least 65 matches of getting at least 100 points to unlock a new mech. That's stupid.
Considering the amount of Free-To-Play games which has been released lately, I would imagine people now to be used to cosmetic items costing real money and unlocks taking a decade to afford. Games like these require money to be maintained and created, nothing is truly free.
Steam version is releasing tomorrow. (Today for anyone who already has an account, check your email).
I've never played this or signed up for it but they totally sent me a code yesterday? I tried it and it's pretty fun, but feels like it's going to be grindy all the time. I'm fine with grinding, but if it starts out on a grind it's hard for me to get into.

You guys gonna be playing this? Would be neato if I had some fp squad maties instead of pub randoms, installing this now to give it another go since my first time really wasn't all that great.
I remember this game being quite well optimized for my laptop, but the gamemodes felt a bit repetitive. Did the gameplay get any better since the end of 2012?
I found it to be an okay game, but the straight progression its business model kind of turned me off. I was also an alpha tester, and they didn't give me my skin, which made me pretty mad too.
So uh I just got an email that this is on steam and I was an alpha tester? I must've registered and forgot about it, gonna check this out.
So uh I just got an email that this is on steam and I was an alpha tester? I must've registered and forgot about it, gonna check this out.
Got the email too, downloaded it and tried to play but found 0 games after waiting in a "queue" for 10 minutes.
Shit when I played I had a Raider with a Shotgun and did fine. Even against those fuckers. Don't know what you're doing wrong.
Why can't I find a single god damn game. It stays in a queue forever.
My game simply freezes at Sync Accounts right after I login.
Got into this game yesterday. The Fred is wonderful.
I joined this game back in alpha and only played a few matches, I just noticed it got on Steam so I installed it and played a few matches still with the stock mech. Then I realized I had 13,000 in credits so I bought the Incinerator mech and holy shit is it good. Those tank mechs with the big shields used to always get me but now I can just run right in front of it and blast it to pieces. I still get killed but this thing is seriously badass.
This game is fantastic! My only thing is the somewhat arbitrary mech/weapon restrictions. You can have two mechs that look exactly the same but are restricted to different sets of weapons.
Got this tonight and really enjoyed it. I bought the bundle that gives you nine mechs to start with, cause thirty bucks is pretty fair for a game I'm enjoying this much, as a one-time payment. It gives me plenty of variety to play around with, and makes the grind considerably less noticeable. Nice game, this. [editline]17th February 2014[/editline] My only complaint is that there's really not much in the way of customization. I'd have much rather they let you actually build your robots, choosing parts and weapons and abilities to really personalize things to your preferred playstyle. [editline]17th February 2014[/editline] Expanding on that a bit, it really does feel like a huge opportunity missed. Hawken's gameplay is solid, but it seems so counter-intuitive to have a robot arena shooter that doesn't actually let you build your own robots. The differences between classes feel arbitrary, set up the way they are for no other reason than to force you to grind or pay to unlock them. Why are secondary weapons locked to the chassis? Why can you only pick from one of three primary weapons for each loadout? Why can't you pick a different ability/perk? They easily could have easily implemented a system that encouraged just as much grinding/realbux investment with a customization set-up by having the market-place charge you for individual parts (like Armored Core) instead of fully prebuilt cookie cutter set-ups, so this had to have been an intentional design choice. It's just weird. A lot of missed potential, there.
poopin around the customization screen and realized i had both alpha and beta paint colors.
So, bought Hawken yesterday. It is amazing :D [editline]17th February 2014[/editline]
Steam says I've played this for 6 hours so far and I'm already bored. Business model is really pricey (both real money and virtual currency) and many of the balance issues which caused me to stop playing during the alpha are still in the game. Sharpshooters and Rocketeers that just sit on the sidelines and shoot at players ruin the fun for me. Bit of a shame because it's a gorgeous game and runs so smoothly. Oh well, will be putting this one down for a long time, I think.
I actually love the sharpshooters and rocketeers. As someone who uses the Assault and Bruiser classes most often, I always find a good way to flank them and shred them. I dare say that aside from technician mechs, they make the easiest targets by far.
I've been playing Hawken on and off since alpha. It's really nice the changes which have been made. Assualt class is definitely my favourite. It's just weird. A lot of missed potential, there.
For a large company, yes there would have been a fair bit of missed potential that there shouldn't have been, but for the size of the company, and the sake of balance, it actually was the right thing to do. In fact, they scaled down the customization in the patch prior to this one. Each rank you would climb you would get a point to invest into your mech. They would be small changes like 1% less cooling, and +0.5m/s walk speed. The problem was this was that it simultaneously offered higher rank players an advantage as they had more points and there was the "ideal build". While you would see a couple points different here and there, 99% of the time, if you looked at a top level mech, you would find they were set up similarly or identically. It didn't help that there was a little bit of extreme things to be had (such as the 1 second overheat cooldown on the grenadier). They could have kept the system, but it would have had to be scaled differently to each mech creating too many balancing variables. As for the locked ability and secondary, that is to be expected and what really set the classes apart. Granted there is some overlap, but would a Grenadier be balanced if it could also get access to the med beam? Or what about a scout with a Corsair-KLA? The weapon selected for each mech ability, and the ability is what really is the defining point of each mech, either is exclusive to the mech for balancing, or because it is the most fitting one for the mech to have. They have said they are working on including some more customization in the long run, but for the moment, it just is the way it is. Low level pilots tend to lack situation awareness and the often times, twitch like reflexes, needed to play the sniper class. The reaper, the light sniper, is more often played as a close to mid range fighter than a long range one. If you are ever unfortunate enough to meet someone who knows what they are doing in either of those mechs, they will utterly roll you.
Really all this game needs is more goddamn weapons and maps.
