I played Hawken way back when I think in the 2nd closed beta they had and it was annoying to me because they had veteran testers pitted against brand-newbies and it turned me off until now, with the Steam release.
I'm giving it another shot, but I'm essentially still a newbie.
Any pointers / advice?
When you dodge, focus your dodge on getting out of damage to behind cover, or if you are in the open, tend to prioritize one weapon over the other. For instance, a TOW launcher is far more important to dodge than a few vulcan rounds.

I have a friend who I introduced to this game a few days ago who consistently stomps the hell out of the enemy team. He has a 90% winrate with 50 games and every single game I've played with him has been an absolutely soul-crushing stomp.
The best part? His favorite mech is the Assault G2.

What level is he?
He started two days ago and now he's level 16 already. When he gets on later today he's probably going to reach past twenty considering how fast he's leveling :v:

Our last match I went 4-0-22 and he went like 22-2-5 in TDM. It's fucking silly. I'm betting his low K/D came from his first so-on matches right after I showed him the game.
I'm sorry to say, but that won't last. In fact, when he finally reaches level ~25, he is likely in for a rude awakening. The last time I got dropped in a level 14 match, I shouldn't have been dropped in there, I had 30 kills and 8 assists at the end of the game. I had purposely switched to the G2 as well, just to handicap myself. Low level games, if have any semblance of skill, are a cakewalk.
We get matched up with level 30's and stuff a lot actually, and while they're pretty good, it's still a huge stomp.
I would say you'd be right normally with any other person, but I've been playing games with this guy for a long time now and I would honestly say he's pretty talented. Well, extremely talented. He used to play Armored Core competitively as well too, one of the reasons I introduced him to this game.
[editline]24th March 2014[/editline]
It's getting kinda' silly though how often people will just leave the match though now.
I also think you guys are heavily underestimating the damage that the G2 deals. I was playing a regular Assault and it honestly didn't compare when playing with him.
The G2 may deal good damage IF you can land every shot, but it is the utter lack of burst damage which cripples the mech. Quite frankly, anything it can do, something else can do better.
If you are stellar at twitch shooting, get the sharpshooter. You will still be able to ping things a few metres away, while pinning down the enemy team to an insane degree. The top performing sharpshooters in the game are utter monsters on what they can do to a team.
If you love high DPM, the scout can put it out faster and can get in and out of situations quicker.
If you like the the G2 for what it is, the assualt with a vulcan can do what it does, but better.
The utter lack of any burst damage is what ultimately cripples the G2, and it is not like it has the mobility or DPS to pull it off. Scouts or infiltrators will just laugh at the G2, if they are any good. They can dictate terms of engagement, and no matter how high the G2's DPM, it means little if the enemy is not exposed long enough to use it. All the G2 is particularly good at is preying on players out of position, and plenty of other mechs can do that.
I was once against several users using the G2 Assault mech, most of them were terrible, but then one of them was at level 30 at max rank with the mech, it was not easy killing him compared to the others trying to kill me with it.
Oh and I was using my Assault mech during the time.
I would highly disagree that the G2 lacks burst. After seeing it in action, it just mows down pretty much all mechs besides heavies (fuckin' Vanguards), and even then if you're good enough you can out maneuver them well enough in the G2 for it to not be a huge problem.

Question for everyone: can we all agree the Rocketeer is the most annoying mech in the game? :v:
It's my favorite since it just shits out damage.

It's mostly effective in the hands of a really experienced user, also heavies just gain additional damage from the top and back if they're in turret mode, so it's not really hard to hover over them while shooting back down at them with any mech types really.
As for the Rocketeer as much as I love using the thing it's mostly just an annoyance since it's great for covering areas until it's swarmed by more mechs. This case for both with and against the Rocketeer.
If there are a lot of enemies and the situation is chaotic, then the Rocketeer shines like a star. If they're all there for him because of how fucking annoying he is, that's another story :v:
He's far from a front liner, so direct combat is a horrible situation for the Rocketeer from what I've noticed, even if he is a heavy. The best situation for him to be in is to have someone tanking up/distracting for him on the front lines, or being on an objective match and he can just control the playing field.
[editline]24th March 2014[/editline]
He makes people scatter like mad too.
I once experimented with it by playing it as if it was a regular assault mech without using the shields at all, it's weird, but if used properly, the Rocketeer can be effective even without just guarding a position.
Someone play HAWKEN with me so I actually play.
I keep opening it and either let it sit there for 15 minutes before closing or play a single newbie bot game and then close it and I want to get into it but I have nobody to play it with.
sum1 pls
Officially giving up on this game. Who thought it was a good idea to split-up parties with automatic team shuffling? I can't even play with my friends now, which was my entire point in getting this game.
Jesus the dev's are retarded.

Right? And I was so close to spending my money on this game.

Is that for real?
Wow I mean I still have no friends who play it but I mean I guess I can just not bother to keep trying it.

There are a couple ways they offset that a bit. Being teamswitched now nets a Team Balance Hawken bonus. At the same time, the matchmaker is apparently being worked on more for next patch. The switches generally occur when teams are imbalanced.

This needed to happen sooner.
So I'm new to the game and the first mech I bought was the Assault and I slapped an Assault Rifle on it. Was this a shithead idea? This loadout seems to be a straight upgrade from the Recruit, but I don't know anything about the mechs in this game, really.
Hot damn, Assault mech forever.

And then the players immediately left after they lost the match. (Don't ask about the party icon, my friend got a random disconnection during the match)

They're doing a double HC/XP on April 11 until April 14, I'd like to see if someone can confirm that having a booster doubles the earnings during the event.
How fun is this game> It seems rather interesting.

Loving the default res now.
So I dunno if this counts as necro posting but a friend recently got me to play this game and I was curious if anyone here still played it.
It seems pretty unpopular right now. Like I keep seeing the same people over and over switching servers due to the limited number of players. But my friend says its getting better player count wise at least.
I haven't played for a good while but I sure the game still stands strong, we just don't have a big enough of an audience.

they just don't update the game and when they do they make terrible design choices. on top of that it's a huge meat market grindfest which is okay for some free to play games but when you're pretty much not even rewarded for your effort it becomes a pointless endeavor
it's a fun game but it has little to no longevity and due to the lack of content you'll end up playing it a few days and then forget about it once you discover all there is that it offers
You'd figure they should make a drastic comeback by making a singleplayer/cooperative campaign mode involving holding off waves of rogue AI mechs. (Though the firefight mode is already implemented, the campaign isn't)
