Honestly I think centaur and troll were more fun with their older ults. Giving heroes global buffs is pretty boring too. I'd rather have an ult that makes the caster super strong rather than making all the allies a little stronger. Having one person stronger requires more teamplay to keep that person alive through an encounter or from the other side of the coin, to be able to coordinate to keep that person locked down.
Also, drow had that ult before they changed centaur to the shell of his previous existence that he is now.

the passive strength comes with levels, the old ult gave you bursts which made you incredible tanky for that specific level then you planed out to normal strength until your next ult level which bursted your stats again to make you overwhelmingly strong for that level.
