If they just draw for a hobby it's likely they just did it for fun this way. They draw animesque because they think it's a fun style, they draw DOTA fanart because they think it's a fun game.
Not necessarily because stylization makes it easier or fanart means you don't have to come up with something original and can rely on references instead.
