Couldn't we just use some hacky jailbreaking stuff to rid our oculii of the facebook crap if they do integrate facebook?
My roboto-merge :(
Couldn't we just use some hacky jailbreaking stuff to rid our oculii of the facebook crap if they do integrate facebook?
Not even that much. If they decide to integrate Facebook, someone's going to come out with third-party drivers ripped straight from the official software. But they've already said they're not going to integrate Facebook across the entire platform, so there's not much need to worry there.
In regards to "pocket-change": fucking no, lol. If you'd listened through the entire conference call you'd have heard him assuring his investors that buying whatsapp and oculus in such a short timespan is a one in a million occurrence, because both are crucial to the future if FB wants to stay ahead, and that they have no similar purchases planned into the future. 2bn is a huge deal. And no positive implications for the device?? What??? Besides being able to strive for their long term stretch goals in RnD, and have a secured foothold in production and sales?
wasnt whatsapp also like 19 billion?
I also want to say something here. Everything Zuckerberg said during the investor call is absolute truth. Why? Because you don't screw with your investors. They own you, and they WILL end you. There's nothing an investor hates more than being lied to.
You can really feel the tone when they refer to gaming with a subtle mix of condescension and respect. Like you can tell they understand the important of gaming (if only to the process) but have almost no interest in it, neither Zuck nor the investors calling In.

All the major publishers are the same way. That's what Facebook is here, a publisher. Somewhere between EA and Ubisoft, I'd wager. Why are people such defeatists? We hit a minor PR stumbling block, and suddenly VR is dead and we should all go home and burn our dreams. Are we really so jaded?
Frankly I think it's due to everyone's inner hipster upset that their cool Indy thing is getting pushed towards mainstream, combined with a circle-jerking bandwagon that is groupthink Facebook hate. Regardless of past wrongdoings, they know what needs to be done to make VR successful, and just like the onslaught of ignored complaints about Facebook or YouTube updates, people will forgive (or more likely forget) as long as it isn't completely derailed.
I got paid today so I treated myself to a DK2 pre-order, can't wait to get it!

the annoying thing is that he never said he was going to do rift support only a tiny stripped-down free version of minecraft as a VR demo but he did get overly dramatic about facebook regardless ESPECIALLY for a tiny demo
I'm really looking forward to seeing what will be Facebook's idea of virtual reality universe. Something similar to Second Life? Exciting stuff.
I've got a pre-order down for Australia. Should be interesting to see where this goes.

Bought a used Razer Hydra set  I will be ready for 2045, when CV1 gets released :v:
I'm wondering how the consumer version will do positional tracking and the only think I can think of is a faster depthmap camera on the HMD it self.
I'm wondering how the consumer version will do positional tracking and the only think I can think of is a faster depthmap camera on the HMD it self.
My bet for positional tracking is a stationary camera, like Kinect or PS Eye. Can't really think of anything better. Also, one camera would let them also track your arms and whatever you will have in/on them. Gloves? PS Move style remotes?

Haven't heard a lot from them lately though. Wonder if they'll survive in the VR-input Wars.
They're sort of already doing that with DK 2, the trouble is that it won't recognise it if you go out of range by turning too far.
I don't expect they'll come up with a different positional tracking method any time soon though. Pretty much any solution that is bolted on the headset itself is prone to drifting.

Speaking of input, look what I found You can ask questions and give feedback here: http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/21i5me/developing_a_haptic_glove_inputoutput_device_for/
/r/circlejerk is having fun with all the drama.
Tested response http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWtfHiQx50U&feature=share&t=39m10s
This is a very interesting talk on the Facebook/Oculus deal, but it's quite long.
So is 4chan
Now I really want a Facebookhugger case for OR.
Don't they have enough money to develop a new way of doing it now?
Doubt it. They researched a variety of ways, and an IR camera is still the most robust and best performing option they have. Same reason motion capture is still done with a whole bunch of cameras.
