The coolest AR thing I've seen was actually on a modded Oculus Rift. The dude attached front cameras to it, could create infinite virtual monitors, and interact with them with his hands or a mouse and keyboard because he could still see them. The only problem was resolution, meaning he had to lean in to the monitors to read them. I'm not sure such a thing will be viable for at least another year or two.

Ar cameras would be nice so you could pause and see stuff around you without taking the set off (ie someone walks in the room). Not really worth the extra cost though
4k rift screen = 1080p virtual monitors so yeah, 2-3 years
Well, depending on size and distance of the monitors. OH FUCK
Did he leave valve?
I just want to throw this out there: Facebook buys Oculus, and Abrash joins them? Shouldn't this be a good indicator for how these professionals believe in Facebook being a good move?
Did he leave valve?
It's not explicitly stated anywhere, but I assume so. [editline]28th March 2014[/editline]
I just want to throw this out there: Facebook buys Oculus, and Abrash joins them? Shouldn't this be a good indicator for how these professionals believe in Facebook being a good move?
His post explains why:
The final piece of the puzzle fell into place on Tuesday. A lot of what it will take to make VR great is well understood at this point, so it's engineering, not research; hard engineering, to be sure, but clearly within reach. For example, there are half a dozen things that could be done to display panels that would make them better for VR, none of them pie in the sky. However, it's expensive engineering. And, of course, there's also a huge amount of research to do once we reach the limits of current technology, and that's not only expensive, it also requires time and patience – fully tapping the potential of VR will take decades. That's why I've written before that VR wouldn't become truly great until some company stepped up and invested the considerable capital to build the right hardware – and that it wouldn't be clear that it made sense to spend that capital until VR was truly great. I was afraid that that Catch-22 would cause VR to fail to achieve liftoff. That worry is now gone. Facebook's acquisition of Oculus means that VR is going to happen in all its glory. The resources and long-term commitment that Facebook brings gives Oculus the runway it needs to solve the hard problems of VR – and some of them are hard indeed. I now fully expect to spend the rest of my career pushing VR as far ahead as I can.
So... We good now? This is a good thing, right?
Did he leave valve?
I don't think it's possible to leave Valve; just go on extended vacation.
So... We good now? This is a good thing, right?
Luckey assembled a team of industry legends. I'd be surprised if they didn't summon Captain Planet by accident.
So... We good now? This is a good thing, right?
It's a good thing in the sense that more talent and drive is massing at Oculus. If Facebook is able to avoid doing anything overly stupid, which based on precedence is quite likely, the rift should become greater, faster.
I'm not sure how big of an effect this will have. Abrash was doing vr stuff and working closely with oculus even when he was at valve
I'm not sure how big of an effect this will have. Abrash was doing vr stuff and working closely with oculus even when he was at valve
It shows he trusts the new boss enough to join, I guess.
Wait, who's Abrash? This is all going right over my head
It's this guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Abrash
So, here's a little question. Why are people saying that Facebook bought Oculus to impede progress on VR? I read that on a CNN article today, and found it more than a little interesting... For a few reasons. 1. You don't spend two billion dollars to buy a company if you're not going to use it. 2. You don't buy a company to hinder your competition if you're not already in that market. 3. You don't buy a company to hinder competition if there is no competition. Rationality's just gone out the window everywhere, hasn't it?
Carmack's take on the FB acquisition, at last (read from bottom to top) He spent a couple hours answering some concerns as well.

Facebook's in a position to keep them on track, say if they miss a ship date or manufacturing deadline. I'd expect a little bit of gentle prodding. What I am not expecting is what the hysterical masses have been saying, which is that Facebook is going to gut Oculus, shut it down, and murder the team. I think Facebook wants to sort of put out a compelling product in a reasonable timeframe. It's in their best interests to. What they do with it after that is irrelevant at that point, because they can do anything they want without compromising the integrity of the platform.
Just watched the Michael Abrash speech: Interesting but he talks about lots of stuff we already knew.

Great talk IMO.
https://twitter.com/notch/status/449691527510786048 Oh Notch, you such a brat.
He's trying to sound snarky but the statement is too truthful to come off that way.
The Oculus rift looks really nice, I can't wait until I get my hands on one :)
