Palmer on the negative reactions about the whole facebook thing:
They shouldn't be sending death threats to Palmer and the poor Oculus team, they should be sending threats to Zuckerberg, he's a psychopath, so he can handle it. [editline]30th March 2014[/editline]
Apparently /v/ wrote an open letter to Palmer.
Did /v/ only just learn English this week? I doubt Palmer could read that, much less understand it.
They shouldn't be sending threats to anyone, because it's fucking stupid.
Yep, I just hate Zuckerberg.
Palmer says: CV1 is "well beyond" those specs. http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/21nmu9/any_chance_of_a_news_update_coming_to_clear_a_few/cgf3gwv?context=3 And it's coming in 2014, not 2015.
Nice. Where did you read about 2014 release though?
Its funny to think that in 30 years or so the idea of people playing 3D games (or maybe even games at all) on a flat 2D screen will seem so outdated. Hell the first VR consumer models will likely look so "haha look how fat it is!" to folks in 30 years. I'm pretty much expecting the future of this tech to not even be VR goggles or screens at all. Stuff that literally just hacks into your brain/retinas and make your eyes "see" a constructed experience instead of the real world. Maybe even going as far as replicating feelings of falling/etc as well.

But I don't think that'll happen until somewhere around 2052.
Apparently /v/ wrote an open letter to Palmer.
Did anyone else read the letter in Tyrone's voice?
Yep, I just hate Zuckerberg.
Why, because he makes more money than you? Or is it maybe because you don't like the fact that they're helping Oculus?
I don't care that he has more money than me, my path in life is different and I'll enjoy it as best I can. I just don't like Zuckerberg as a person, he looks to me like a psychopath or a sociopath and hate those sorts of people. Oh you got me, I really hate that he's helping Oculus  .
"i hate people that I think they look like my imaginations depiction of a psychopath" - angstyteen1999
Are you trying to argue that I should change my opinion, as it is of course .... a personal opinion and not stated as fact or presented evidence? Also I'm not the only one who thinks that. Or am I attacking someone to whom you idolise? In which case I shouldn't be wasting time arguing with you.

Ah ok, I didn't realise that's what it looks like. I'm probably not explaining myself properly. I hate the guy because he has no consideration for other people and generally thinks of people/customers as play things. But that's just a personal opinion, everyone hates someone.
Yeah, sure. But now remember that his personality is not going to have an impact on the development of the Oculus. His money is what matters. Look, Facebook might go off and create silly social applications for the Oculus, but what does that matter? I don't imagine it being bundled with the device even. The Oculus will be even better due to Facebooks monetary support, don't worry about it.
I'm ok with them getting his money provided he doesn't mess up the project and I'm very much in the wait and see boat right now.
So the new DK2 Any new and cool information about it? Have they shipped out some to special people yet?(Like big developers) Anyone have any experiance with the low persistance and can explain how it is much better? ps. Stop the fucking facebook discussion i don't care if satan himself controls facebook as long as oculus behaves themself i see no reason to distrust Palmer and more importantly John Carmack
Wow, I'm sorry but you've never said anything you might regret if you suddenly became one of the richest people on earth practically overnight? He was a college student working on a project, it's completely moronic to freak out when every other person you know would probably have said the exact same thing in that situation. People keep pasting that stupid fucking image everywhere like it justifies their butthurt Facebook hate bandwagon, but even if he said that today, it's not like he'd be wrong. Just honest. [editline]30th March 2014[/editline] We should instigate rules preventing further pointless discussion of the z'berg.
I've been wanting to get a devkit to make a sort of game/educational software of space where you can view certain events and get to listen to eg Sagan and Tyson talking about them.

I'm thinking about making a program that helps people deal with their arachnophobia.
Carmack responded to this tumblr post: http://peterberkman.tumblr.com/post/80827337212/wrong-and-right-reasons-to-be-upset-about-oculus With the following:
I share some of your misgivings about companies "existing and operating only to be acquired". I am a true believer in market economies, and the magic of trade being a positive sum game is most obvious with repeated transactions at a consumer level. Company acquisitions, while still (usually) being a trade between willing parties that in theory leaves both better off, have much more of an element of speculation rather than objective assessment of value, and it definitely feels different. There is a case to be made for being like Valve, and trying to build a new VR ecosystem like Steam from the ground up. This is probably what most of the passionate fans wanted to see. The difference is that, for years, the industry though Valve was nuts, and they had the field to themselves. Valve deserves all their success for having the vision and perseverance to see it through to the current state. VR won't be like that. The experience is too obviously powerful, and it makes converts on contact. The fairly rapid involvement of the Titans is inevitable, and the real questions were how deeply to partner, and with who. Honestly, I wasn't expecting Facebook (or this soon). I have zero personal background with them, and I could think of other companies that would have more obvious synergies. However, I do have reasons to believe that they get the Big Picture as I see it, and will be a powerful force towards making it happen. You don't make a commitment like they just did on a whim. I wasn't personally involved in any of the negotiations -- I spent an afternoon talking technology with Mark Zuckerberg, and the next week I find out that he bought Oculus.

I did skip the data mining issue, mostly because I just can't get very worked up about it. I'm not a "privacy is gone, get over it" sort of person, and I fully support people that want remain unobserved, but that means disengaging from many opportunities. The idea that companies are supposed to interact with you and not pay attention has never seemed sane to me. Being data driven is a GOOD thing for most companies to be. Everyone cheers the novel creative insight and bold leadership that leads to some successes, and tut tuts about companies ending up poorly by blindly following data, but cold analysis of the data is incredibly important, and I tend to think the world will be improved with more and better data analysis. I have never felt harmed by data mining, and I rather like the recommendations that Amazon gives me on each visit. Educate me. What terrible outcome is expected from this? Be specific.
The cool thing about treating phobias is that you can create scenarios you can't do in real life. Sure it's easy for treating arachnophobia, just bring a live spider to the patient, but what about stuff agoraphobia, which is fear of open spaces? You would have to find a giant open isolated place, hard to do in cities. And fear of open water? You would have to get a boat, and find a lake/ocean, on which the patient can face his fears. Or how about PTSD? Recreating the traumatising memories through a virtual retelling, guided by a trained therapist. Right now the PTSD is treated by confronting the memories, how about giving them the "real" thing instead? Man, possibilities are endless.

[editline]30th March 2014[/editline] What IS data mining, in the context of the Rift? I don't see the Rift needing or implementing an internet connection, and I don't see it applying a steam-like wrapper to games to report what you play. It's a display device.

So basically like every other piece of hardware this decade. They would have no way to mine your data if you use the second option, you know, in the grim case they will actually try do that.

Same with voice recognition; they theorize they're gonna record everything you say and sell it to the NSA (Linus Tech Tips.)

Also, why does everyone think they're selling anything to the NSA? They can rip it straight from the lines.
