Cloudhead Games give some info on their VR locomotion implementation in The Gallery: Six Elements. The snap rotation seems like it's a good way to help first person movement feel more natural.
I'm not sure I like the idea of navigating using my head.
I'm not sure I like the idea of navigating using my head.
To be fair, these guys have been building their game since the first dev kits started shipping. They gathered a lot of knowledge about what works best for movement. So I wouldn't dismiss it too quickly.
What's this I hear about Facebook trying to rush development of the OR?
What's this I hear about Facebook trying to rush development of the OR?
I have heard absolutely nothing about that, other than some vaguery in the original press releases about "accelerating those plans." Said plans were manufacturing plans, which they can do now because they have money.
In the wait for CV1 I'm currently in the progress of printing this on my printer: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:93460 It might not be working well but I'm giving it a shot! :v:

i need to live to see this only then can random meteors cave my head in
I'm just worried the line for the booth will be a mile long. Like, as long as the line for TES:O was last year.
Oh yeah no doubt it will...was a mile long at PAX prime and that was just for DK1.
I'm not sure I like the idea of navigating using my head.
This, make it an option you can switch on and off and everyone is happy.
Oh yeah no doubt it will...was a mile long at PAX prime and that was just for DK1.
If you're talking about pax prime last year, it was actually an HD Prototype (I was there with a friend) But yeah, expect the line to be really long.

Is it possible that with a high enough pixel density that VR could replace monitors in some workspaces? So you'd have the window box floating in mid air where a monitors would be?
Yes, I think John Carmack might have mentioned that on Twitter but I don't remember what the resolution was.
virtual dual screen 3D-on-2D gaming multitasking

Which makes sense since these two 1080p monitors I have here take up about 80 degrees of my horizontal vision. Biggest issue with virtual monitors is that you can't see your keyboard or mouse. Most of us can probably type blind, but it's still annoying when more novel interactions are needed.

EUROPE NEEDS A PAX!!!
EUROPE NEEDS A PAX!!!
Last year they had a booth at GamesCom in Cologne. [t]http://www.mmobomb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/vr.jpg[/t] However... Yeah, who could have seen that coming. [t]http://i0.wp.com/www.roadtovr.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/DSC_0086.jpg[/t]

[editline]8th April 2014[/editline]
Transparent displays with adjustable opacity. That would be sick.
I had an idea about this a while back. Transparent displays seems a little too futuristic but they could have a camera on the front which looks for IR markers on your keyboard and then superimpose a virtual keyboard into your HUD when you look at it. The main problem I can think of is you would either need a specific keyboard with IR LEDs installed or a kit which lets you set them up yourself and calibrate it with a database of keyboard layouts so you can find your specific model.
[editline]8th April 2014[/editline] Transparent displays seems a little too futuristic
OLEDs can be transparent.
OLEDs can be transparent.
I haven't taken an Oculus Rift apart but I imagine there are circuit boards and stuff behind the screen. If the screen was transparent they would have to move it all to the sides and the headset would be much bulkier.
I'm so impatient for the retail release, and i've had the money saved for the oculus for ages, but i dont know. I want it more than anything but i'm not a developer, just a humble fan waiting for it, so the wait is killing me uugh. I want to atleast complete hl2 in VR before i snuff it.
Why not just put a camera on the front of the oculus, so that a small live feed shows up inside of the simulated reality, showing your keyboard etc? could even put two cameras and create a virtual world with virtual monitors where yours are instead.

Seems pointless if you are going to break it by shoving a window of the real world in there too.
The whole point of the rift is immersion. What about the small video feed showing your keyboard then? Wouldn't it work?
I think it would be neat with a virtual OS that you can browse and do things with. I imagine typing would be more like using a touch screen, except the keyboard floats in front of you and you use a motion controller (Razer Hydra as an example) to move 2 pointers around and hit the keys.

What's the screen tech called that means all pixels are powered at the same time rather than having the power "wave" through? My googling skills aren't what they used to be. Anyway, that, along with the lenses in the rift, I think would make it difficult to do AR with a transparent screen. Cameras seem like the better option.
