Of course you would say that, you're a satanist!

VSync has nothing to do with how the pixels update. Its to solve the problem of grabbing a frame from the buffer while it is being overwritten with a new frame, the effect being that a teared image is passed onto the display.
I know that Oculus previously stated that they wouldn't be making any peripherals besides the Rift itself for the time being, but perhaps that was one of their 'impossibles made possible' by the FB deal. Given that they're investigating hand-tracking, does anyone think the consumer rift may come with it? Or sold on the side within a year after?

Don't think we'll see anything during the release of the consumer Rift. Mainly because they don't want to force people to buy anything else but the Rift to get started with VR.
But afterwards, who knows.
When Facebook purchased Oculus VR for $2 billion, both companies stayed fairly tight-lipped about their goals. The money would help Oculus build virtual reality headsets cheaper and better, while Facebook would have a chance to lead the next big computing platform.
However, Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe just told an audience at TechCrunch Disrupt about one lofty possibility for the pair: building a massively multiplayer experience for one billion simultaneous users. "This is going to be an MMO where we want to put a billion people in VR," he told attendees.
Aiming high, taken to a whole new level.

The person who wrote that article sounds like an old man screaming about how radio will corrupt the youth. It's better to just pay him no mind.

Considering it's Fox News, it probably is...
Granted, they got a bit of an early start. We'll be seeing a lot more of this crap, because concerned parents generate lots of click revenue. Brace yourselves.
this has been asked several times now I bet and I am sorry to ask again but what is the possible release time for the Consumer Version of the rift? Is it still Q4 2014?

Anywhere between Q4 2014 - Q2 2015. Nobody knows for sure.
Being a little sad DK2 might not come with a fancy case, I set off getting my own. So I found an old pelican case and spare soft pillow foam.
Using the previous old foam for base, pillow foam for side wall/cutouts. Didn't cost me a penny.

(29.5cm W x 43.5cm L x 11cm + 4cm H btw)
It's going to look like hell but at least it wont have a chance of breaking while traveling.
New prototype of the Rift will be shown "soon". Brendan has hinted/implied in the past that this one will be the CV1 prototype with full presence. After that it's release time, think like how the Crystal Cove was shown before the DK2.

It's all happening so fast now, maybe there is still hope for a 2014 release...

Hey, it's only May. If they're moving along this quickly, it shouldn't be any great surprise if they hit a November/December release date.
And then they get all the Christmas sales, solidifying their place as the Next Big Thing.
If CV1 has presence, that's a whole year ahead of schedule. Facebook packs a punch!

and it brings me such great joy

it's not coming with a case like DK1?
I don't know if this is really news or even relevant, but whoooeee

Unfortunately it's LCD instead of OLED.
Ah, that'd explain the 'too-good-to-be-true' I was feeling.
Unfortunately it's LCD instead of OLED.
if it's IPS, then it's not much worse if not pretty much the same
possibly other than input lag, but idk. i don't know if the whole low persistence thing is possible with IPS/LCD.
LCD switching times are too slow. They're not suitable for a consumer Rift.
Apparently, along side the reveal of an unreal tournament, Epic Games will be showing off VR at their stream
Linky
Not to mention LCD IPS doesn't do blacks very well. Seeing light bleed on blacks would be odd in VR.
Not terrible, but odd.
OLED is the best solution because blacks will actually be true blacks, the colors might not be as good as a high quality "designer" IPS but it'll still be pretty damn good (blows TN out the water), the refresh rate is stupid fast, and it's the closest we'll get to an OLED monitor anytime soon (since OLEDs are prohibitively expensive to make as you get larger and larger in screen size).
let's use CRTs and give everyone eye cancer :eng101:
[editline]8th May 2014[/editline]
it's funny considering CRTs fill out every desire in display technology for the rift, but the size lets it down a million times over
it's not coming with a case like DK1?
It's not included in the accessory list like it was for DK1, so it is assumed it wont be. I heard back and forth it was slashed due to costs, a lot of people didn't want it, etc. I don't think I can find an official statement on it though.

Good luck wearing a CRT on your face...
Is it even possible to make ridiculous light CRTs with present knowledge?

maybe if we kept using the technology but no for now

The only thing not possible with them being global display technology, crts always need to be scanned from one direction to the other.
So long as CV1 has a good case, I'm happy.
By 'good case', I mean something rigid to protect it from pressure and with enough padding to protect it from shocks.

I'm pretty sure it's going to come in a cardboard box. Most electronics do.
You might want to look into Pick-N-Pluck Foam and a gun case. I will be.
Alternately, one of these would probably handle it: http://www.amazon.com/Zeikos-ZE-HC36-Medium-Hard-Case/dp/B001HJTK5Y/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1399596667&sr=1-2&keywords=padded+case
