"next-gen oled screens" implies its higher than 1440p right?
Pretty sure it means the 1440p screens. They're not out yet, they're next gen.
I think Samsung is pretty happy to secure a new industry for pushing small high-res displays. It doesn't make much sense pushing far beyond 1080p on smartphones. I read a few reviews of 1440p screens from LG that seem to indicate that there's not much of a difference. At some point the user won't perceive the resolution bump. However for VR HMDs they can go far beyond 4K before you stop seeing a difference in detail.

There's much to accomplish over the next 10-20 years. Smartphones have absolutely no need for 1080p+ other than for complicated Chinese and Japanese characters which 1440p is basically a godsend.

It's wonderful how Oculus is hoovering up all these great experts.
can't wait for UT4 with the rift
We can finally say this: we'll have a DK2 next month!
Hopefully it isn't the end of July, going to Japan for two weeks.
Well, you guys might. I'm still drooling over here waiting for the CV1.
Hopefully i get the DK2 on my birthday in july, ironically the dk1 arrived on my birthday last year.
omg hurry UP Let's take bets on the days they ship?
omg hurry UP Let's take bets on the days they ship?
I'm saying July 31st. That way, if I'm wrong, then hey my DK2 is shipping! If not, hey I won a bet!
If you want to make this official... https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rzS7ZblFTy4dQM5LhHh37eXXe0Bc0QqcuhIxNkZwoDU/edit?usp=sharing
We can finally say this: we'll have a DK2 next month!
ahhhhhhh I am so excited
I'll go with 22
Gonna cave and buy a DK2, oh god the excitement.
Gonna cave and buy a DK2, oh god the excitement.
You're kinda late so it will ship in August.
I'm fine with that, my point was I'm not going to bother holding out any longer.
You're kinda late so it will ship in August.
at the quickest, I'd say
All these boxes...I'm so sorry that I'm now in a position where I can afford to order one. Sorry about that.
You should be if developers are having a hard time getting access. These aren't consumer products. But seems like DK2 production is a lot higher.
You should be if developers are having a hard time getting access. These aren't consumer products. But seems like DK2 production is a lot higher.
They had sold 45,000 DK2s back in April. It's been 2 months since then, they probably have more orders than there ever were orders for DK1 (75,000) by now.
One of the big reasons I haven't caved and bought a developer kit is because I don't have a great video card. I'm waiting for the consumer version before I upgrade because I can't afford to upgrade often and I'd rather wait for the "perfect" experience. Is it a reasonable assumption that if I buy a good vidcard now (gtx 760), come cv1 release it might not be good enough to meet the requirements for a truly immersive experience?

I'm going to have to get a new PC when I pick up a Rift, so I'm just going to wait it out until the requirements are finalized. Fewer headaches in the future. Might aim more toward an HTPC build, though, so I can move away from the desktop paradigm. Hook it up to my new 50" plasma, use it as a dedicated gaming machine. Keep my laptop around for serious work, web browsing, that sort of thing.
Woo March ordering! How do we know they're shipping next month?
Because they've said so since the beginning?
Redditor shares some Valve HMD experiences from the Boston VR jam: http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/274uao/pics_and_impressions_of_the_valve_hmds_at_boston/ Notable: Valve has a Dota 2 VR demo internally where the arena is displayed on a table in front of you. [editline]3rd June 2014[/editline] More info about Valve's new HMD iteration: http://www.roadtovr.com/new-bits-new-valve-vr-headset-makes-appearance-boston-vr-bender/ Apparently they ditched the QR-code covered room in exchange for the same positional tracking system as DK2.
I'd love to see those tech demos released to the public when CV1 comes or when and if valve releases their own VRG.
Eagle Dynamics will be at the Oculus E3 booth showcasing their DCS Rift implementation using the DK2. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=2082048#post2082048
DUXFORD, UK, June 3rd 2014 –Eagle Dynamics at the Oculus booth for E3 2014. Showing its latest Digital Combat Simulator (DCS) titles, Eagle Dynamics will be pleased to showcase exciting cockpit experiences on the Oculus Rift DK2 (Development Kit 2). Eagle Dynamics is excited about this opportunity to display the amazing combination of its true-to-life cockpits with the virtual sense of presence possible only with Oculus VR. By press appointment only, Eagle Dynamics will also be available to demonstrate two new aircraft in development: The F-86F Sabre and the Fw190-D9.
[editline]3rd June 2014[/editline] Also Oculus scooped up another elite, this time Douglas Lanman, a dude from nVidia and MIT. https://twitter.com/oculus/status/473896471259914243 [editline]3rd June 2014[/editline]
Douglas Lanman is a Senior Research Scientist in the Computer Graphics and New Experiences groups at NVIDIA Research. His research is focused on computational displays and imaging systems, emphasizing compact optics for head-mounted displays (HMDs), glasses-free 3D displays, light field cameras, and active illumination for 3D reconstruction and interaction.
Is CV1 still slated for the next release after DK2? I'm itching for VR, but I don't want to buy a DK2 if I can avoid it.
