I wonder if it's just an elaborate ruse to get all these guys into a conference room, and just gas the living shit out of them.
"Rift - We mean fucking business"

What did these guys make in the past? Well, the Xbox controller for one.

And the Kinect.

Those are not Hydras, Stems or any known controllers.

Some tinfoil theories from reddit regarding the "strapped" looking controller.
I felt the same way until I saw the straps. They mean you wouldn't actually need to actively hold them and could get the best of both worlds. Precise hand tracking via IMU and camera, fingers remain free and can be tracked with the camera alone, and then a thumbstick and buttons conveniently waiting for when you need them.

It definitely looks like glasses man is holding the same or similar device that is set on the table. They both have a strap that goes around the fingers, possibly a seperate space for the pointer finger, though the guy has his pointer finger on the outside of the strap. The top of the green controller looks like it could be an ir led array for tracking, or perhaps a mount for something else. The man on the far right is holding a thumbstick/button looking device. His hand looks like it is in a similar position to mr. glasses, perhaps the gamepad is an optional attachment to the top?

Some tinfoil theories from reddit regarding the "strapped" looking controller.
I love how the second one calls him Glasses Man.
It'd be interesting if the strapped controller used some sort of proximity detection system for each finger, so it accurately mapped where your fingers are in 3D space.
I doubt we're quite able to do something like that yet, but it's a cool thing to think about.
I did just blow a significant portion of my VR budget on a new Eames shell, though... So hopefully I can make that back soon. I'm really starting to consider buying a DK2, for no other reason than I'm super impatient.
The ADR1FT developers got their DK2 today ;_;

If I don't receive my shipping email before July 1st, 0:01, there will be some serious nail-biting next month.

Once I do get it, I'm going to organize demo sessions and stuff again for friends, family and random people. Half the fun of having a Rift is showcasing it to any person willing to strap it to his / her head.
Every time I visit my parent's house my father asks me about "the helmet" ever since I let him experience it 2-3 months ago.

My dad dislikes video games but he sat down in my chair with a joystick and just flew around in War Thunder for an hour. I can't imagine what his response will be to the CV1, will be fun to watch.
[editline]26th June 2014[/editline]
Granted, he and I used to play MS flight simulator 95 all the time :D

I could never land as a kid :(
I managed to figure out how to land in MS combat simulator before my dad
granted it was kind of a crash landing but the pilot still lived :v:
Orders for the DK2 will be open up until the CV1's launched, right? If so, I might order one this month, since I'm going to be coming into quite a lot of money very soon. I'm really itching to get my hands on this sort of tech, even if it's still early.
I'm hoping to have enough cash for a Rift and change by the end of the month. We'll see.

I read about this yesterday... This is interesting, considering almost everybody has a 1080p screen in their pocket these days. I wonder what projects like this could mean for the future of VR? Could we see a Rift-alike that uses your phone as a display make it to consumer production?

My late Grandfather was a pilot, he introduced me to flight sims when I was very young. I still have some on floppy disk in a box somewhere.
Not ashamed to say I was quite sad after first flying with the Rift. He would have loved it. To me it felt like my gaming life had come full circle :v:

I wonder how well that works, seeing how different phone models have different screen sizes, requiring different distortion shaders for the lenses etc.
imagine owning a CV1
then meeting 'that guy' with a Google Cardboard setup who insists what he has is just as good and fuck you for saying cv1 is better youre dumb

That's when you just walk away and never talk to that guy again.
I've done that. It works well.

You significantly underestimate the power of stupid.
So, on another note, has anyone here played any racing games with the Rift yet? I know Assetto Corsa supports it, but I'm not really sure how it works. Is it as absolutely terrifying as it sounds like it'd be?
I guess the shipping is still $100+? (to here at least)
Haven't been following news at all really. Pretty uninteresting until big stuff comes out.
I actually built one of these yesterday, it works surprisingly well I have to say. I personally haven't tried the Rift yet but my cousin who has, couldn't notice that much of a difference he said, except that my phone has a higher res of course. But yeah this was pretty fun, not much to do with it though.
It's going to be hard to wait for the Rift, I can't wait to play some War Thunder. I will wait for the CV1 though.

I'm a bit sad that my Devkit's screen got a bit of an image burnt into it.
I hope the CV1 will have some sort of timed shutoff if the rift isn't being moved/used.

Imagine if the rift had extreme burn-ins with CV1
that would be god-awful.

Because I would be letting my little cousin use it to make him amaze.
