its coming guys
ahhhhhhhhhh
all my hype
Selling my Rift on Thursday. Wasn't going to get a DK2 but I want to keep working on my game so I think I will buy one. CV isn't due until 2015 anyway right?
genuine question :
is it worth getting the DK2 or waiting until an actual consumer version? Can't say I'm much of a developer myself, I can code, but is DK2 almost strictly a "serious dev no games support this" thing?

Eh, i'm pretty sure plenty of indie devs got it, and quite a few games are starting to support it.
And yes i got myself one.
(Loved playing half-life 2 on my dk1)

Most of the DK2 orders are not developers :v:
If you order it now you'll receive it in August thanks to the long line.

It sounds like the consumer version is going to be cheaper and better so I personally would prefer to wait. It's up to you but generally, if you aren't going to be developing, there isn't much point.

how far away will that realistically be? the DK1 was released over a year ago, whats there to say that the DK2 to CV1 time gap wont be the same, if not greater?
It's smaller. The CV1 will likely come out in Q4 2014 if we're lucky, or Q1 2015 (more probably)
I would say if you're not gonna develop anything for it, you may as well wait till CV1 now
it'll be cheaper, smaller, more fully featured and just better in every way
I'd love to try one, but throwing my money at a dk2 isn't worth the cool factor of just toying with it for me.
I'm a bit of an early adopter in a lot of things, and I still haven't seen, used, or owned a DK1, so I'm planning on picking up a DK2. Worst case scenario, I end up doubling my money when they switch the DK over to a CV variant, like the people selling DK1s on eBay are right now.
I'm still waiting.
[sp]Still in this puddle of anticipatory drool.[/sp]

yep they still inflate the prices to ridiculous amounts
not that i was hyped anyway, hasn't been for 3/4 of a year
Blame Scandinavia. It's 500 dollars in p much every country around here, our taxes are insane
It's only $372 for me... And I live in a state with 10% sales tax. I'm very glad Oculus doesn't realize that.
I think that is because it is an online order. Most states don't tax them. Depends on your state though.

We actually just passed a law this year that mandates state sales tax on Internet purchases. However, I think it's one of those "we won't actually enforce this, but do it anyway" kind of things.
Granted, we also don't have an income tax, so it sort of evens out. Since we're such a big tourism hotspot, the tourists end up paying what we would otherwise lose by not having an income tax.

doesn't happen if i order stuff within the eu, no extra tax added
i guess it's because they're in the us though?

The tax was the same for the DK1, and that was shipped from UK to Finland.
Maybe it's because the company itself is based in the US? Or maybe Finnish nazi taxes are just breaking the EU laws like usual.

yeah i know, otherwise i'd ordered it instantly
must be, because you can order anything here that's inside eu and get it on their taxes with no extra fees
but if you order from china and it get stuck in the toll you're fucked
Can I fly the TARDIS in the Rift, yet? :(
two
dayssssssssssss
Working on my own homebuilt HMD and let dad try the Google Earth part of the Cardboard app. What can I say? Hearing him tell me all about what some random houses had around them in what I believe was the areas around mount everest. It was awesome. Can't wait for CV1 and let him try a much more awesome experience

One daaaaay
potentially...
I don't wanna get my hopes up too much in case it doesn't happen
Strange. The money I have had clenched in my hand since trying DK1 is still there. I know, because I just checked.
This money wants to leave my hand for a CV1 so bad.

holy shit this is cute
I went to AIA (an architectural conference, autodesk/chaosgroup/other 3D companies were there which is why I visited), and chaosgroup (the developers of VRay) had a demo set up with an Oculus HD model. I was already way impressed with the screen resolution
Afterwards, I found Worldviz and talked with them for a while, they had their own headset, plus a DK1 with a Kinekt set up. I didn't get to play much with their things but their VR software seems pretty sharp and light with texture baked scenes. One of the employees there had talked with Palmer the previous weekend, and told me that he commented on shipping. Apparently, provided everything keeps going smooth, "it should be 1 and a half to 2 weeks". I didn't think to clarify at the time, so I can't say for certain that he meant that Luckey said 1.5-2 weeks from that day they talked, or that the guy was paraphrasing to say it was that long from the moment I was talking with him (last friday).
SO, that locks the estimations down to anything between July 2ndand 11th (1.5 weeks after talking to palmer, vs 2 weeks after talking to WV. Either way, it's slightly less vague than "hey we'll get an update on what's happening july 1st"
slightly off-topic, there was a booth for 9/11 truthers. It kinda made sense they'd want some attention from architects and structural engineers I guess
also there was a generic group of render artists from China, with a giant sheet of posterboard with tiny print on it.
welcome
we do
3D renderings
welcome
wish I got a picture of it but I felt bad for them. Nobody spoke English except for one interpreter girl who seemed like she was still in high school, and she didn't understand a lick of the tech talk we wanted to go over with how they do any of their 3D work
the works posted on the wall behind them were impressive, but it all came off like one of those scammy overseas render groups that never provides the crazy quality you see in all those renders of giant infrastructure projects and skyscrapers
Palmer attended a VR chat a few days ago btw, here's the video. Interesting infos included.
/u/palmerluckey/ has been having a number of meetings with Asian component manufacturers lately (and developers?)
Palmer gets on well with tech reporters as he'd once been studying to become one
Oculus prefers it if people don't come to them with VR projects until they have a working demo that shows something of value, even if the demo isn't great
Oculus is gearing up to crush some competing hardware (e.g. controllers) and VR apps (e.g. VR Cinema) who are potentially wasting their time currently.* "We're not doing this to try and roll over people or because we want to screw them, but at the same time we can't go to them and be like, 'hey guys, heads up, we're going to be doing what you're doing, so... stop.'"
Oculus is not making a cyberpunk adventure
Oculus is nearly out of DK1s
Oculus is recalling all HD prototypes, and intends to leave none in the wild (serious). Plans to bury them at sea (joke).
TimeWarp will be built into Unity and Unreal at launch
TimeWarp shouldn't be relied on to increase framerate since it introduces artefacts. It minimises the effect of framerate hiccups etc.
Military wants ruggedised Rift. Oculus too busy, and not completely sure they could sell it for enough to justify the necessary R&D
Oculus pays for all its Unity licenses as normal
It's up to Unity whether to allow Rift support in Unity Free, but they may be pressured into it since Unreal has it.
The best practices guide will get notable updates. Examples showing what to do and what not to do are planned.
Palmer played all the E3 demos multiple times
DK2 SDK allows multiple apps to access data from the sensors
It is possible to do charity work in Second Life.
Oculus and Facebook are building the Metaverse, but it's at an early stage - design not yet locked down. Will focus on user-generated content (it wouldn't really be a Metaverse otherwise)*
Palmer says things like VR chat will "get even better once... there's a way to integrate games and content with this kind of environment... where it can be kind of like the real world where people can get together and do activities together". (Oculus' digital distribution platform may be integrated with the Metaverse?*)
Palmer knows someone is working on a D&D game where the DM can script models etc.
No Man's Sky will have Rift support.*
Better to occlude IR tracking lights than stick anything transparent to them that might distort their visible (to the camera) position
The Jackie Chan film Palmer alludes to is probably Project A.
Quite a few people want to film stuff for documentaries but Oculus are too busy working
Quite a few celebrities call up wanting to visit the offices and try the Rift but Oculus usually turns them down
Palmer will be able to talk about "a lot of cool stuff" "closer to the time DK2 is rolling out"
DK2 shipping from China by both sea and air (that explains the taxes)
It's impossible to make CV1 look like the Kickstarter render
CastAR looks cool
Palmer missed out on the chance to try Kite and Lightning's big sex machine.
VR is beginning to gain traction with the canine demographic.
No plans to build any more big Oculus offices currently
Palmer is involved in most new hires
Oculus moved from Perforce to Git, partly for ease of open-sourcing software
Oculus avoids patenting any important trade secrets as it would just allow people to steal them
When asked whether the Lucky's Tale demo would be released with DK2, Palmer said it was up to Paul and you'd need to ask Playful about it.
finally some validation on my long standing predictions that there'd be a new secondlife/equivalent
I'm pretty sure people already do this in secondlife
is there talk about a thirdlife ever being developed? A fresh start on that stuff would be pretty welcome, you'd get a lot more general users back in, especially with rift.
