I'm waiting for the CV1 requirements to be nailed down before I order a new graphics card. I don't want to get something I'll have to upgrade within a year because I jumped the gun.
Doesn't hurt that I'm still a little broke right now... Would a graphics card be a good use of a student loan, or is that just ridiculous and stupid?
Depends on what you're studying I guess.
I'm in for 3D Animation / Game Design so I have full justification for doing it.

I'm in Journalism and Electronic Media with a specialization in Broadcast/Magazine Writing, and a minor in English.
So... Yeah, ridiculous and stupid. I'll just keep saving, I guess.

"Journalism and Electronic Media". You can justify getting one for a review and report.
Oh, yeah! I forgot that I do that. I also forget that I sort of run my own review website, which I update from time to time. Maybe I'll use that flimsy justification if I'm still broke by CV1's launch.
I also write for a couple of my University's journalism outlets, including the paper, so I could probably do a review for that too. Maybe even a demo on the tech show they run on the TV station.
Speaking of which, anybody know what goals they're aiming for for CV1 aside from "Thinner, Faster, Better?" I know there was talk about a 5.4" 1440p OLED screen (which Samsung currently produces for two or three phones), a Carbon-design chassis, better positional tracking, and some sort of resource compensation on the software side. They've said they've already got production-spec prototypes in-house a few times, right?
I wager we'll hear something by the convention, but there's no guarantee of exactly what that could be.
So way before I even had heard of the rift, I ventured out to make a little something on my own to learn how to, well how to do anything. So modeling, texturing, programming & working with sound. It resulted into making this.

But now I'm wondering, having owned a DK1 myself and having spend hours in the virtual cinema :v:
I've started thinking to myself, would this have any potential with the rift? What do you guys think? Now it might seem a bit boring with a static camera , but think of multiplayer, fireworks, smoke...the whole shabang
That's hella cool. You should texture them, compile them for Source and release them on the Source Filmmaker workshop!
A VFX studio in the UK announced to be working with David Attenborough on VR documentaries.

To me it's not quite clear if they're aiming for pre-rendered / recorded 360 videos, or if they're actually making 3D environments. They seem to be hinting at the former.
It might be pretty cool to do a mix of both. Like filming actual animals and using computer magic to put them in photorealistic CGI environments.

...
And after a while that resulted into making this, which turned out to be a great learning experience. Not to mention it was loads of fun.

I picture you now as the creator of the first VR raves.
Samsung's Gear VR is launching this September. You plop your smartphone in there and it'll kinda work. But it will have relatively high input lag and no positional tracking.

'we can surely say that users will have an excellent, flawless and immersive virtual reality experience.'
erm, not 100% on that to be honest
it's still a phone at the end of the day
Bet Samsung is only cashing in on the VR craze. It'll be a sub-par experience compared to even the DK2, not to mention CV1, but what can you expect when it's using a smartphone's laggy gyros and sensors and no pos.tracking.

Galaxy Note 4 possibly getting a 5.7 inch 4K screen. Will be unveiled in September.

Apparently having a higher res screen reduces screen door effect even if you render at a lower resolution. And upscaling from 1080p to 4k would barely cause a performance hit.
still no shipping emails :(
someone got one early and did an unboxing

Yeah, that's how 4K TVs work now, since most cable providers don't want to supply the hardware to actually display footage at 4K. It's also how a lot of people play games on 4K TVs, etc.
You'd get a lot of aliasing, but you could fix that really easily. I would not be surprised if Oculus chose the 4K display, and they're waiting for Samsung to announce theirs before they do.
1080p upscales perfectly to 4K, too.

Looks like the box will make a nice little storage/travel case, even if it's not quite as nice as the DK1's plastic box. I can't wait until we start hearing the reviews from people who have used the DK1.

Ooh, isn't Samsung's VR Gear also launching in September?
One of the new Galaxies and the Gear VR could make for a pretty decent experience...

as a side-note, I had some samsung reps at my office last week and got to play with their 4k tablet for a few days before having to ship it out
it was so ridiculously dense, I can't even fathom a 5.7" 4k phone, but you can't argue with the bragging rights of making the tech
5.7 inch 4k screen
that would be amazing
1080p upscales perfectly to 4K, too.
as does 720p
It's now the 9th. We should be seeing the very first shipping notifications go out within a couple of days.
What kind of shipping do they give? 3 day? Standard?
What kinf of shipping do they give? 3 day? Standard?
UPS. My DK1 was 4 days from UK to Finland.
With that Google cardboard VR and this Samsung Phone VR headset I feel like these random companies could turn VR in a joke if they keep announcing this mediocre stuff...
Well, sort of. However, these smaller attempts aren't really shooting for the same thing Oculus or Sony are. I'd imagine this "mediocre stuff" (and it's perfectly acceptable to call it that) won't be aimed at providing presence, or "transporting you to another world." I'd wager the goal is probably a lot simpler than that: 3D movies, photos, simple games, and atmospheric visual content that doesn't fit any of those titles. Possibly AR content as well, seeing as Samsung's leaving a camera viewport. Overall, though, their VR and Oculus's VR are two completely separate markets, and could also be considered two different visions.
(I'd also like to say that the VR industry has already been the butt of many a joke since the boom of the late 90s. The biggest reason it won't be this time is because the tech's finally grown up to meet the requirements involved for good VR.)
I could see the samsung and cardboard thing being a nice thing to sell on the premise of the google camera's 360 pano viewer, which already uses the gyros to let you look around like you're inside the room. Would just have to update the app to split the view, albeit that won't be in 3d
I had a dream last night that the shipping email arrived ;_;
I dreamed a dream in time gone by... Of VR gear and Palmer Luckey...
Oculus is currently sending emails to anyone who ordered 2 or more Rifts, to make sure that they're not resellers.
