I think we're waiting for Samsung's new generation of displays. Maybe some other tech research or Facebook's apps. Nothing official though, they'd give it away by telling the public.
Actually, for a person who wishes to purchase a consumer version of the Oculus Rift, what are the problems, as of now, that currently delay the CV from comming out sooner?
Usability. The DK2 needs a lot of fiddling to get to work and consumers don't have that kind of patience. The CV1 needs to be plug and play, and the Oculus Direct mode is a good start but even that needs fiddling at the moment.
Resolution. It needs to be higher because consumers will complain about the screen door no matter how small it is. They have confirmed CV1 will have no screen door effect whatsoever.
Price. They need to take it down (and they have confirmed they will) from $350 to something more reasonable to a consumer, how much is still unknown.
Small niggles like chromatic aberration, true black smearing, FoV, unit weight and design (something cooler than a black box) etc.

I wonder what resolution we need before screen door is non existant, 2560x1440?
when this things out in 2015 you'll need a pretty decently expensive pc even then. I mean sure it'll be LESS expensive because new gfx and shite but still. this thing is going to require maybe 60-75 FPS constant for it to look not laggy and feel horrible.
(i say this unknowing of the future and of possible new tech things that oculus will do and prices of tech in the future)

Good news is, they've got all that in the pipeline over the next few months, so a ship date of next Summer isn't unreasonable.
They've got the Carbon design team working on a new shell.
They've got Samsung working on 5.7" 4K displays, which are supposed to be announced sometime later this year.
Price will go down the more units they make, due to the weird way mass-market manufacturing works. If they intend to launch an Oculus store for online distribution, they could even sell it a bit below cost and make back the money through licensing fees. Not sure that's something they'd do, but it's an option.
All the rest just need time to hammer out, either by their engineers or software developers. Nothing there is insurmountable, especially with their growing team of geniuses.
Really, the biggest issue with their current plan is going to be true-black smearing. That's an issue inherent to any OLED panel, no matter who makes it. I wouldn't be surprised if they switched to a fast LCD for the CV1, if it proves to be that big of an issue.

Honestly, I would not be surprised if it does require a pretty beefy PC for it to be viable. However, I'm also pretty sure the team's going to optimize the crap out of it before it ever hits market.
On top of that, I wouldn't be too shocked if we regress a little bit in graphical quality, and start seeing more Cel-shaded, simplistic games for the system. Things like Lucky's Tale. Then again, as long as you use a multiple of 1080p, you won't have to render at 1:1, which will cut down on the requirements. Most modern PCs with decent graphics cards* can render 1080p 3D at 60fps no problem. Even the PS3 pulled off 1080p/30fps/3D with Gran Turismo, and how far past that have we come?
*The GTX 770 is supposed to be the Baseline, but people over on the Reddit say the 560Ti can pull its weight too, as long as the graphical settings are adjusted appropriately.

Nah it is a recent thing manufacturers have fucked up. My S1 never did it, nor did the Galaxy Nexus. My S4 does do the smearing though.

Do you remember exactly how the S1 looked, though? Specifically, the blue-green tinge it had?
They solved the problem in software by preventing true black from ever being displayed. The downside to that is, because they chose a pentile screen (the same type that's in the DK2), everything gets a greenish tinge.
That's currently the solution on the DK2 as well. You just prevent it from going full black, but you get the tinge. It's a weird trade-off that you don't get if you use a normal subpixel arrangement, but the Super AMOLED panels are all pentile, and there's not a lot of competition.
There aren't many arguments to be made here. True black smearing is a noted issue of the OLED display technology. It was an issue with the PS Vita, it was an issue with Sony's OLED monitors, it was an issue with Panasonic's OLED TVs, and it's an issue with LG's OLED TVs as well. There are documented cases of these things happening across every OLED display ever produced. You can't remove it, because it's fundamental to the way OLED displays work. The best you can do is prevent the pixels from turning off, using multiplexing techniques.
And that causes the blue tinge. So, for a while at least, VR will look like the Matrix.

It has no colour tinting at all since I adjusted the gamma on it in the past, it is displaying 0,0,0 and there is no smearing. I recorded a video but it is 50mb and will take forever to upload with Australian internet.

I get the greenish tinge AND the purple smearing on my S4 but the green tinge only kicks in when you drop the screen brightness to the lowest.
There's no way you've got an OLED screen displaying 0,0,0 without smearing. Especially one known for it. That's got to be some sort of witchcraft if you have.

Search for 'galaxy s1 oled display smearing ghosting -s4 -"note 3" -tv' on Google. The OLED smearing is only a recent thing happening and old devices never had this issue.
Oculus said the patch will greatly reduce it without having to resort to the green tinge.
My DK2 touched down on the mainland in Brussels. Really hope it'll reach the Netherlands before the end of the day, because tomorrow is the perfect time for me to stay at home to await its arrival.
Mine's on its way to Copenhagen and should be there within the next few hours, and from there it will take a boat to helsinki.
Has anybody in Australia received theirs yet or at least been notified of shipping?
There was a small mix-up on our end, but we are fixing the problem right now. I don't want to get your hopes up, but we plan to be shipping very soon. Thanks for your patience.
10 bucks they sent the shipment to Austria

Atleast I would've gotten my DK2 early. :v:
So I haven't been paying much attention to this lately, but they've made some big improvements right?
Like less screendoor effect?

Motion blur is gone, resolution is much higher and the screendoor changed from an all-encompassing grid to tiny little pinholes that are easy to ignore. Also positional tracking to move your head around and a new OLED screen with an infinite contrast ratio with true inky blacks n shit.

Man I really want this like right now.
I can't play any flight sims because I have no head tracking and I don't really feel like buying TrackIR because I'll buy OR later.
First game I'd try if I had a DK2 would be Assetto Corsa, or Euro Truck Simulator 2. I have a G27 wheel, with Force Feedback. And with positional tracking on the DK2 and stuff it'd just be amazing. Sadly I've got other stuff I gotta spend my money on though.

Corsa isn't getting DK2 support until late August and ETS2 is still unknown.

I won't know the true meaning of happiness before I put on my Rifto and spend years in the virtual world.
Every now and then I'd get out and make a sensory suit or something.
Then I'd spend all my life in the rift

Some guy on PCGamer made an article and said that, after 30m of playing ETS2 on the DK1 he was so immersed in it he actually tried to rest his arm on the door of the truck. Of course it didn't work but if the DK1 at 720p and no positional tracking did that, I can seriously see myself wasting afternoons on end inside the Rift, even just the DK2.
how is he playing ETS2 on DK2?

oops misread that
and I would definitely say that nothing on the DK1 was able to immerse me that deeply, so I doubt his writing a little

Seeing how some people react to Rift coasters and stuff, I really don't doubt it.
right, if you have/are getting a DK2, you need to try the Proton Pulse demo - it's by far the best demo I've played on either DK1 or 2, it's astonishing
