nah your eyes are focused on infinity so they work more or less like real life.
question tho, how much exactly like real life? will I see the same distance infront of me ingame as I would in real life or what?
That didn't really explain to my 5 year old brain why nearsighted people have to wear glasses. I'm slightly nearsighted (-0.5 and -0.7) and I can't understand why a screen close to you would need glasses.
Sorry for :downs:
a bit off topic but the only thread I can think of posting this in.
so yesterday I got an eye test done for the first time because I plan on driving soon. Apparently I'm short sighted (-1.50 and -1.75) which I've known but I've never really known what it'd be like with glasses so I was a bit excited.
First time trying out actual glasses. HOLY FUCK everything is in super hd. I can't live without them. I've had posters on my wall which I've always thought looked blurry and low resolution as shit, apparently they are not.
Everything looks fucking awesome now, the grass, the trees, the ocean, people, for fuck sake even looking at a freshly done shit is interesting now. I used to download posters in 2560x1440 of scenery and think damn that must have been a high resolution camera to take a pic like that. Little did I know, YOU CAN ACTUALLY USE YOUR EYES TO SEE THAT SHIT IN REAL LIFE, WHAT THE FUCK.
I don't know how long it is but I literally can't not smile when looking at stuff now. Everything looks fucking amazing, people probably think I'm high or something.
I've spent my whole life in fuckin 240p. Imagine the jump I'm going to get when I get an oculus rift and go fly around space or something and look at astoroids. Padre forgive me for I will sin.
Man this reminds me of when i first got glasses. When my mom and I walked out of the building, it was night. I looked up to the moon and IT HAD CRATERS! It was so crisp and clear; Full moons are awesome. Before then, the moon was just a fuzzy white circle.

honestly it is more noticeable than this image would make it out to be, but it is far, far better than DK1
How so? It's literally a screen and lenses right in front of you, why would being near-sighted be a problem?
Exactly, your eyes are always in their relaxed position while using the Rift, focussing on infinity. Which is why objects up close in VR are a bit weird, since your instinct is that you have to strain your eyes to focus on them but that isn't the case.
If you're near-sighted and trying to use the Rift without any glasses or contacts, the entire screen will be blurry since everything is considered 'far' (has nothing to do with how far the object is in the virtual world mind you, that's determined by the stereoscopic effect).
lucky bastard, you got a front panel cover
[editline]30th July 2014[/editline]
well maybe mine is a limited edition 'no front panel cover' model so there
Had an issue with bad judder in the demo scene, and I couldn't switch to Direct HMD Access from Apps in the Rift Display Mode (it was greyed out). Reinstalling the Oculus Runtime and restarting my computer seems to have fixed all of this.
[editline]30th July 2014[/editline]
All my Direct To Rift apps (except for the demo scene) crash on startup :/
I've never tried an occulus rift, since I'm just gonna wait for CV1.
But even sight-unseen I'd buy the CV1 for $350.
Why? Because it's pretty much an extra screen.
A good 3D-capable screen at a high resolution with low latency will set you back that much, at the very least. And that's not even including things like the Nivida 3D vision kit and glasses.
So far the Kokiri Forest demo is the only Unity demo that didn't either a) crash when in direct mode, or b) just showed a black screen when in extended mode. Maybe because it moved to DX11. However the demo has bad juddering issues (and that can't be the fault of my HD7950) :/
don't forget guys the oculus rift will come with (correct me on this) 1 or 2 sets of near sighted lenses.
I have a question though ... if it's only one lense. Won't it strain my eyes like fuck if they are too strong for my eyes?
I'm pretty new to glasses and shit but If the oculus rift glasses are 2-3 diopters and I'm 1.5 or whatever, won't it hurt like a motherfucker?

It's one extra matching set of course.
Darn it, i missed my eye doctor appointment so i could get contacts
I'm -1.5 so i'm assuming in order to see stuff sharp in the rift i'll need to wear my glasses or contacts (and i don't really want my glasses rubbing against the rift lenses)
Hey, maybe you won't get the screen door effect if you don't wear your glasses :v:
Have you looked at porn since getting glasses? Curious, is it better or worse now because of the clarity?
my short vision is normal so it wouldn't make a difference
honestly it is more noticeable than this image would make it out to be, but it is far, far better than DK1
Yeah it's caused by youtube ('s compression) as I said.
Man, most DK2 demos are all sorts of broken for me. The only thing I can get working without issue is the demo scene while in Direct Mode. The Unity games either crash, or show a black screen, or aren't replicated to my Rift in Direct mode, or there's judder (like in the Kokiri Forest demo). When I append -force-d3d11 to some of the Unity games I get different but still bad results. When I tried the Spirited Away Boiler Room demo with the DK2, the camera was suddenly jolting around as if a character was moving his head around, and I could turn my head to see the edges of the rendering plain.
Just wtf.
the juddering in Kokiri was Aero on in Windows for me, disable it and it fixed it personally
ETS2 has beta DK2 support now, the "oculus" beta branch can be enabled via Steam. Works only in extended mode atm, direct is not yet ready.

huh. what is that? does that mean I can use the oculus rift to browse steam and look at stuff with head tracking? like the elite dangerous menu
edit: shit, bad reading, continue the boxes

What no, you right click ETS2, click properties, click "beta" and then choose the oculus branch from the drop-down menu
Then add -oculus to the launch options and play

Palmer wants to sell the consumer version at manufacturing cost, so you might be seeing it for like 300 bucks.
It's not just an extra screen too, it's a gyroscope and positional tracker all in one package.
Just tried the updated Euro Truck Simulator 2 with the DK2, and it's magical.
Even what you can see in the wing mirror changes depending on where your head is in space, like in real life, and I can hunch down in my pretend trucker seat and look through my steering wheel.
Amazing.

I'm on Windows 8.1. Doesn't have Aero.
Seems generally accepted that the SDK is a bit of a mess right now. Plenty of people with driver issues like me. Should stop trying to fix it on my own; managed to break my BIOS settings last night because of that and had to do a CMOS reset (don't ask).

Meanwhile let's pull some gems from the Oculus subreddit:
This guy broke his nose in the Rift.
Unofficial Oculus service manager, some people lose tracking and have to manually restart it it seems. Plus 0.3 SDK demos require you to kill the service.
Euro Truck Sim 2 has DK2 support
5 stages of the Rift, for those that ordered their DK2 way past March.
The Oculus Service Manager is fucking awesome and that guys is awesome
I was reading the oculus subreddit and I came acrros a post

Is this your first experience in the rift? When I first got my DK1 I had lasting effects. Sometimes hours after. But after a few weeks the side effects diminished and I am now able to stay in the rift for long periods of time with no after effects.
Baby steps my friend.
Like Jesus Christ we really are doing this getting used to thing with VR. I'm afraid some people are going to get so used to it they'll forget to eat or something, just like those chinese people whom die in cyber cafes etc. Gee can't wait for CV1 ffs.
