Have you guys heard of the GTX 880 4 GB supposedly being 200 bucks? This could be amazing in combination with CV1.
Haha. Nvidia underselling its hardware? Pigs fly before that happens.
aww I totally misread something, apparently the chip inside is worth 200 bucks I think. Anyway the rumored launch price is 449 dollars. still not too bad, not bad at all. might pick one up when I go over to Canada, things are so cheap over in the dollar countries for me.
its a display device. games are the things which require processing power. ie it depends on the game/demo.
People have made it sound like the Oculus Rift needs a fancy computer because it draws twice the amount of power from your setup
With new GPUs being announced this fall there should be a noticeable price drop on current gen GPUs. Sure, we have to wait for benchmarks and stuff, but you'll most likely end up getting the best price/performance on current gens.
Live for Speed is fantastic on the DK2. The game itself has pretty aged graphics on a monitor but in VR it looks great, and the DK2's resolution causes a minecraft effect where it's immersive even without 2014-level eye candy.
It currently suffers from slight judder when turning your head but the dev is adding low persistence in a patch soon along with further polish.
I wonder, could the GTX870 be the equivalent of the current GTX780? I'm not exactly sure how the performance gains work for high-end graphics cards over multiple product revisions.
Rise of Flight, I sincerely hope so.
this is the dream I've had ever since seeing the initial kickstarter
I also remember some talk about playing with a powerful fan in front of you and having an angry italian man yell at you while spraying oil into your face
Tested trying out DK2

It's always so frustrating to watch people who suck at Elite play Elite, but I'm really glad the game is getting exposure.
How far in beta is elite? like, is it worth buying right now or should I wait until release?
How far in beta is elite? like, is it worth buying right now or should I wait until release?
they're releasing it later this year AFAIK
right now there's not much to do

Here's my standard answer to that question.
If you have the money to spare, and you think that the space sim revival is the best thing in gaming for the last 10 years, then go ahead and pick it up. It's worth it.
Major updates that add huge game-changing features have been happening about every month. There's lots of minor patches that happen pretty frequently. Usually with bug fixes.
There's not really that much to do right now. You can fly between systems, trade, run missions, and shoot stuff, but none of those things are particularly deep or challenging at the moment. The game is missing a lot of features right now that will go a long way towards making them interesting and there's just a lack of overall content. After a day or two of playing you've probably seen 80% of everything there is to see. How much you enjoy the game right now has a lot to do with how much you enjoy the core gameplay of flying and shooting.
I like flying around and looking at things in the rift in E:D.
And flying by a station is cool.
Yeah, I think Elite:Dangerous could make a very convincing case for a Rift, but outside of that there's not a lot of content yet. Unless you're looking for shiny stuff to stare at with a pair of goggles strapped to your head, it's probably better to just wait for the release.
my brother's dk2 arrived today, so after he comes back from work i'll give it a go

I recommend "Cyber Space" if you want to start puking immediately
Is there any news about special features on future GPU's that make the performance/look of the Rift better?
As in: Should I wait to buying a new GPU until the CV1 is here.
I would say wait, yes
Seeing even 780 Ti struggles in some demos, the whole idea to make your PC CV1 ready now is stupid.
Unless somebody (read: Carmack) does some black magic.
The stutters and judders are caused by the sdk so they will be fixed
been messing around with the dk2 for the last few hours. great stuff. the resolution is much better, although still not large enough. the chromatic aberration is pretty apparent on the edges and i can't seem to find a sweet spot to make it unnoticeable. also my nose is always in pain.
i only tried a handful of demos. some where pretty neat, others were just basic visual demos, and a few just crashed on startup. seems like the better demos/games need to be purchased. i'm really impressed overall though. what demo do you guys recommend the most?

a 780Ti isn't ever going to struggle at 1080p for some years. those are entirely software problems

rip dk2, they're going to have to recall all the rifts
The only solution is to completely scrap the cat feature at this point.
Jokes on you I don't have any pussy
Put the camera on top of monitor
call the cat a feature - "Cat safe."
