if i could order a dk2 and have it next week i'd do it, because i know when dk3 rolls out, ebay will sell the fuck out of dk2 for the original price... but if it were a one week deal, it wouldn't be worth anything on ebay
maybe i should bite it and pay up, to sell off later? thoughts?
[editline]16th August 2014[/editline]
note: i am capable with development, but i won't make anything truly interesting or of value
cv1 is next
I caved in and placed an order on dk2 yesterday. It sure is a bit late, it is expected to ship in october. But I mean as long cv1 isn't released early next year I'd say it's still worth it. I know we don't know when cv1 is going to be released but do you think late 2015/early 2016 is more likely?
I have 2 months two decide so I could always cancel the order if I change my mind.
Looks like the babby is putting his toys back in the pram.

CV1 confirmed officially (as if we didn't guess already) to be 90 hz.
So does that mean Notch is going to develop for the Rift again?
i think he's dissing the rift. its not clear tho
"i care more about my sock than oculus" is how i read it

Hardly. I think Notch is a pretty swell guy that gets more attention than he wants. Ever since the disproportionate amount of hype that 0x10c got, he decided it's better that he sticks to small projects without posting much about them.
The reason he was opposed to the FB buyout was the same as many people back then: a general dislike of what Facebook had become. Now that we know it's not all that bad. Notch just pokes fun at it.
I've tried Duke Nukem, It feels kinda funny to play.

ok so maybe its just a few dumb tweets lately. either way he's probably never going to make a hit again and he knows it
Do you all think CV1 is going to require 90FPS, or if it's just going to be able to display it? If it's the former... What machine is going to be able to handle that? I know the 770 already has some minor issues with keeping frames up for the current Rift, I can't imagine what we'll need for the CV1.

P. sure by the time CV1 comes around we'll be set for games being released today on a 90fps screen.
At least I hope so.

For the next three or so years, we're stuck with 800-900-1000 series NVIDIA GPUs, which are said to only have a 20% performance gain over their precursors.
This year, with the 800 series, only the 60, 70, and 80, and their respective Ti's, are likely to be able to handle 75FPS. The 80 might not have any issues with the 90fps baseline, but everything else will struggle.
Unless Oculus is releasing the CV1 sometime in the next decade, I doubt we'll have the hardware to handle most modern games at 90FPS/1080P/3D, let alone the purported 4K display they're considering.
(All that's based on Luckey's recommendation for the current 770 as being the bare minimum for CV1, so it might be a bit off depending on their new requirements.)

Current HMDI cables can only do 1440p @ 90hz as they don't have the bandwidth for anything higher. They might put a 4K screen in but nobody will be able to render anything higher than 1440p due to pure hardware limitations
[editline]17th August 2014[/editline]
Also don't forget that Oculus works closely with Nvidia and AMD so we might see VR optimization in their cards built in. And the new DirectX 12 is an enormous performance boost.
I was planning on an upgrade around September. But... will the DX12 update need new hardware? I read that there was talk of a launch around fall 2015.

What a tool.
What a tool.
My friends and I joke around about the Wii U not having any games all the time, even though most of us own one and love it. I'm not sure why that same behavior makes Notch a tool, other than because he's fairly rich and relatively famous.
its because he's rich and famous and is joking this to the internet. aka "rich fat hack has nothing better to do but diss people on twitter all day"

imo based on dk2 i'm not sure 1440p is enough. its ok that nothing will render at 4k, but 4k will remove the screen door effect. everything will be much more readable.
doesn't the new galaxy note have a 4k screen?
Carmack is offering Notch to port Minecraft to the Rift.

Would you really want carmack reading your source code though? He'd be facepalming every five minutes.

Carmack is a big Minecraft fan (along with his sons). I can see why he'd want to give it a shot, but there are plenty of business obstacles that'd need overcoming.
The magic he could do to increase Minecraft perfomance though..
And he'll have it done this time tomorrow.
Honestly, I think it might be easier to just rewrite the Minecraft code entirely rather than try to fix it up enough for a port. That's what the 4J guys did, and it works better on their platforms than it does on PC.

Nice Palmer & Nate interview from Gamescom.
that video really stroked my pc gaming ego
Man, I've tried Half Life 2 Deathmatch. Still a lot of fun.
We should create a server and play it (all oculus players).

just for the fun of it i would like a side-by-side comparison of a (hypothetical) minecraft post and pre-carmack rewrite
one chugs along at around 70 fps on a modern rig, no big deal
the other runs at an absurd 500 fps on a calculator
About the connectivity, we don't really need to stick to HDMI. There are other options too.
Also about the screen door effect, I bet everyone has thought instead of sticking more pixels to the display, make them bigger. Is there any problem with it? I mean we could stick to 2k which would be an affordable high end standard in the industry by the time the cv1 is out, would be sufficent for text and details and have next to none SDE if we made the space between the pixels smaller.
CV1 should really use DisplayPort.
