Maybe the tech back then was ahead of it's time, but the tech today is way further than that. I only got a DK1, but even with that, I feel like it's gotten way further along than anything we had in the 90's. Eventually something else will come along and replace it with something more advance. Something that can actually put players into a game. That's been a dream for so many for so long. [editline]2nd September 2014[/editline] VR back in the 90's was advanced, but was held back by too much to go anywhere.
for its time it was advanced, but yeah it wasn't "more" advanced than now by any stretch of the imagination. I keep hearing people reminisc about how we're just repeating history, seemingly to say "it'll never last, again". We were still operating with clunky screens mounted in gigantic headsets using counterweights on the back of your head or massive suspended rigs that they built controllers into so you had to hold it in order to swing it around as you needed (which are still in some arcades today, I remember a Jedi Duel thing at my local Six Flags) I just looked up the classic "Dactyl Nightmare" news report to post for a laugh but found that someone actually recreated it for use with oculus https://share.oculusvr.com/app/dactyl-nightmare-------tech-demo [editline]e[/editline] found the full video, dactyl is in the latter half. this is insightful
What I'm saying is, tech today is more advance, because of the other technology that surrounds it has advanced so much with it. The VR tech only went so far on it's own, while today's VR can advance even further due to the tech and knowledge people learned and created over the decades to coexist with it.
The whole reason Oculus came to be was because John Carmack looked at Palmer's prototype and thought: "we can rebuild the VR dream. We have the technology".
The whole reason Oculus came to be was because John Carmack looked at Palmer's prototype and thought: "we can rebuild the VR dream. We have the technology".
I think it was well on its way before Carmack jumped on it
Just to reiterate: very unlikely GMod's VR support will be fixed (it never worked in the first place) unless both Valve and Garry commit time to solving it. Right now that does not look feasible.
What I think's going to happen is valves going to put the VR support in their source SDK because, why not? and then all source games will be able to use it. Whether this is going to happen before or after the CV1 is released I don't know.
I wasn't really saying the technology was so advanced back then, more that the idea was just being used too early to make it worthwhile. Still, good to see people are optimistic, but rational, this time.

Whether this is going to happen before or after the CV1 is released I don't know.
The original VR support in Source was a separate library that Garry didn't get the source code access to. It crashed with GMod, so he had no way to fix it. good news for VR
I think it was well on its way before Carmack jumped on it
Yes, but nobody would take it seriously if Carmack didn't brought attention to it.
Got a bit worried when I saw Oculus Store pop up but then I realized that A.) This is just a hub for easy access to VR supported software, not a barrier that blocks everything not verified through this store and B.) It's on the mobile platform, where things like appstores and the like are more common than on PC.
Well, Oculus isn't going to be outdone by Samsung, so I guess we can expect 1440p+ in the CV1. Cool.
Well, Oculus isn't going to be outdone by Samsung, so I guess we can expect 1440p+ in the CV1. Cool.
u wot, oculus are reliant on samsungs displays. The CV1 is almost guaranteed to use the note 4 screen.
u wot, oculus are reliant on samsungs displays. The CV1 is almost guaranteed to use the note 4 screen.
Right, no, I know that much. What I was saying is that we now know that they're not going to be using anything under 1440p, since that's what the Samsung Gear uses with a Note as the display. Am I making sense here? I think I am, but I'm not sure. I just woke up. [del]Although using the Note 4 would be a little bit weird, since it's a curved screen with a laminated LCD... I'd imagine a flat screen would work better for VR, but I'm no Palmer Luckey.[/del] Scratch that, that's the Galaxy Note Edge. Not the Note 4. Is it just me, or does Samsung release a billion phones a year?
[t]http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/samsung-gear-vr-hands-on-sg-4.jpg[/t] That exposed front camera looks suspiciously like it could be used for eye tracking Why else would it be exposed like that
[t]http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/samsung-gear-vr-hands-on-sg-4.jpg[/t] That exposed front camera looks suspiciously like it could be used for eye tracking Why else would it be exposed like that
It's a projector, it will project ads into your eye so you know when the best deals are available from samsung. [editline]3rd September 2014[/editline] Or maybe it's both, and it'll keep track of what you look at and show ads related to it.
that's a way more consumer-friendly size for a VR headset as well [editline]3rd September 2014[/editline] also, I've tried World of Diving but the FPS is just so, so bad it's impossible to use with the Rift, it's far too juddery. This is even on the lowest detail settings, and my PC is a hefty one. Not sure what to do.

It was likely left uncovered either to prevent scuffing the glass above it, or in the case someone did come up with a use
the camera has an extremely narrow FOV and can only see a segment of cheek. It was likely left uncovered either to prevent scuffing the glass above it, or in the case someone did come up with a use
It could be used to detect when someone takes off the headset and automatically pause the game.

That lets it know if the ad is related to the user's interest.
Oh, even better, it can detect smiles and frowns. That lets it know if the ad is related to the user's interest.
Ads always make me frown so i'm safe. I'm pretty sure it'd take at most a week for people to bypass anything ad related
Titans of Space dev is porting his game to GearVR with the help of Carmack, but says that the system is only 60hz so you can notice the low persistence flickering in bright areas. I guess it had to have some downside.
There was this empty little booth set up at uni today with a DK1 hooked up to some demo so I went and tried it on, first time using an OR it was blurry and extremely low resolution (probably a calibration issue) so i wasnt impressed. I took it off and a guy came up to me and said "what do you think?" i said "meh, i was expecting more" he said "oh okay. the students are in their first year so they'll improve" he was asking what i thought of these first year students OR game, not the hardware and i said it sucked i felt like such a twat
a bit dumb of them to demo to punters with a low resolution DK1...
a bit dumb of them to demo to punters with a low resolution DK1...
It's not like a lot of people have a choice between the DK1 and 2....
I'm saying, why demo at all? If it's not about the Rift itself and it's about the students' level, just have it on a PC monitor.
oh boy https://twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack/status/507264040079728641
I'm saying, why demo at all? If it's not about the Rift itself and it's about the students' level, just have it on a PC monitor.
because they were designing a VR experience

You can apologize and explain yourself, and then you won't look like a twat.
