I felt a mysterious, irresistible urge to start walking to the right whenever the researcher turned the switch to the right. I could even remote-control myself by taking the switch into my own hands.
Fucking magic.
how much is the oculus rift? should i wait for next versions?
how much is the oculus rift? should i wait for next versions?
$300 atm. Wait for the consumer version in mid 2014.
how much is the oculus rift? should i wait for next versions?
If you have to ask this question, yes. wait for the consumer version
Even the website states the same
[h=3]I’m not a developer. Should I buy a developer kit now or wait for the consumer version?[/h] If you are asking this question, the answer is most likely “Wait”.
The consumer product will improve on almost every aspect of the developer kit, which is essentially an early prototype of the consumer version. This includes comfort, immersion, features, software support, etc… for the absolute best virtual reality experience possible.
If you absolutely must have one, please understand that the developer kits are more or less early prototypes of the consumer version and with very limited software/game support when they ship.
So if you’re not a developer or hardcore enthusiast, sit tight for now. We promise the consumer Rift will be worth the wait!

Every time someone says something about the price, it seems to get higher. First it was $200, then $300, now people are saying $400-$500? What's going on?

Where did you get 400-500 from? The devkit is 300 and they've said they want to keep the cost close to it in the final version.

Scratch that, the post I read was referring to something else. Nevermind.
If I buy a dev kit, do I have to pay for the consumer version when it comes out?
http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/21/qualcomm-mirasol-display-eyes-on
More interesting, though, was the company's next-gen display: a 5.1-inch panel sporting a stunning 2,560 x 1,440 (577 ppi) resolution. Viewed up close, it delivers crisp images, but the reflective display kicks back a silvery tint and colors don't pop as they do on other handsets. But while the sky-high pixel count may not tell the whole story, the screen offers one huge plus: a 6x power advantage over LCD and OLED displays. In practical terms, that means devices could go days without charging. Don't expect to see this guy in your next smartphone, though: by "next-gen," Qualcomm means this tech has a few more years in the R&D phase before it'll be ready to hit a licensee's production line.
Would be awesome if this will be in 2nd gen OR consumer version. They might even try to make it wireless. I'm sure some games don't need zero lag and low latency, but just 120deg 3D screen without any wires.
When your head rotates in real life, the orientation of yours eyes still changes. It's just that your eyes rotate to correct this. This is part of it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vestibulo-ocular_reflex.
Thus, it should work exactly the same in VR; you look at something, and as you turn your head, your eyes rotate to compensate.
the problem with this is when you have pixels changing color to change an image instead of objects and environments actually moving based on the orientation of your eyes vs your head.
you're going to get noticeable, unnatural blur no matter what you do.
Welp, nevermind. It seems it's a e-paper kind of display tech.
It'll get better with positional tracking and an upgraded panel and other future improvements. This is like 3D in its infancy with red-cyan headache lenses.
Yeah I thought so, I think it's the resolution of the panel. Has anyone else noticed that weird ghosting effect when you look around?
galvanic vestibular stimulation
it plays with your inner ear and alters how you perceive acceleration (that includes stuff like which way is up thanks to gravity, as well as feeling acceleration in a racing game etc)
tech has been pretty well explored, but isn't well known - it'd be very cheap as a package as its acheived with some voltage and current control in response to input and two electrodes which you place behind your ears like above the end of your jaw
there's quite a few youtube videos on it, and most are hilarious
I ah yes that's what I was thinking of, I hope it doesn't have side effects.
Yeah I thought so, I think it's the resolution of the panel. Has anyone else noticed that weird ghosting effect when you look around?
It's pretty well documented. The current display panel has some motion blur issues because of that. The resolution, brightness and pixel-switching time need to improve. But luckily that's just a matter of time.

Will Skyrim get official support? I swear I saw someone use the rift with it.

I'm not sure I get what you mean.
Will Skyrim get official support? I swear I saw someone use the rift with it.
Skyrim has unofficial support with the Vireio Perception drivers but there has been no confirmation for official support as far as I know.
If I buy a dev kit, do I have to pay for the consumer version when it comes out?
It would be super cool if they did that, but I severely doubt it due to costs
It'd make no sense to hand them out for free.
That's another reason not to buy a devkit if you're not a dev. I know it's hard guys, but just try to keep it in your pants!
i hope second life gets support
i hope second life gets support
I don't think it'll be long before it has support, given the community
personally I'd be terrified
i hope second life gets support
official support was already confirmed
official support was already confirmed
wait really?
i was joking but that's even funnier
seems I've got some connections and will have a rift at my office in a bit over a week, so I don't have to wait on my orders which are probably going to be forever still
just in time for me to go on a 4-day weekend vacation away from computers asdf
Heard about Outerra because it's implementing Rift support:

Son of a bitch, they added a MIG? I wonder what else they've added. I bought it a while back, but sort of drifted away because it didn't have much in it back then. We have a thread for it somewhere around here.

Holy fucking shit, imagine multiplayer dog fights like this.
I have always wanted a huge open world WORLD simulator like this.
This could be the next Gmod.
