Well I said I wasn't going to buy a Rift, but I didn't say anything about convincing others to.
My girlfriend's dad just ordered one, and wants me to help him start a small company involving VR. :O

Live coding in VR.
Coding? That looks like scripting.
after a month of agony i have finally been reunited with my DK2
it's amazing
Could anyone please measure their DK2 for me? I'd like to know the length, width and height but also the size and depth of the holes on the side where you adjust the lenses.
Thanks!
I could've sworn that it used to be cheaper. Did it guy up in price or am I just dumb?
probably just dumb

DK2 has been $350 since the start, still is.

sorry am dumb pls forgive bae
Do you guys think the price right now is worth it or if I should just hold back until the customer version is released?

DK1 was 300 dollars, so you're not dumb
I think it's definetely worth it, and I paid overprice to skip the 2-month wait.

That's a relief!

Hmm, maybe I'll have to try fork up some cash for it then.
What popular games are there that support Oculus? I know about TF2 and Half Life... but can you get it on other source games like CS:GO or Garry's Mod?

For Australians the total cost adds upto $460-470
Development Kit 2 ($350.00) x 1 = $350.00
Shipping: $75.00 USD
Tax: $35.00 USD
Order Total: $460.00 USD
it went up from $450 to $510 for me i think
What does the shipping cost if you're in the US?
I want to know if it's going to be cheaper to order it to a US address, and then have it sent to Denmark afterwards, I really don't want to pay 75 dollars for shipping, you can buy a couple of games at that price..
DK1 or DK2? I just want VR, not really interested in much else, and there's a few relatively cheap DK1s on eBay.

Games were you "walk around" are really a bad experience with the Oculus. You get the best oculus experience when you play games where your character is actually sitting down. Euro Truck Simulator with a steering wheel or Elite: Dangerous with a proper HOTAS setup. Easily the best experiences I've ever had in gaming.
Holy shit, shipping to Denmark is only $55, but taxes increase the price to $506.25 anyway.. Yeah, I'm just going to wait for the consumer version and hope the pricing is a bit better, or at least be happy knowing that I will only have to depart with these money once/know that I get a finished product
Shipping to California appears to be $22, and taxes are only $26.. I have to pay $100 dollars extra to get it, compared to Americans.. And everything else is also cheaper for you, AND you don't have to pay 60% of your income back to the state..
So in the end, it would not be much cheaper for me to have it sent to an US address and then shipped to me, it's the taxes that kill it for me..
I wrote a really long rant about how shitty all of our pricing in Denmark is compared to everywhere else, but I'd rather not derail the thread too much :P

Niether.
DK1 and DK2 are horribly outclassed by their current prototype that will get developer release (in their estimates) sometime next summer. That prototype is basically going to be the consumer version before they actually make the full blown "on store shelves" consumer version.
DK1 is no longer supported and has half the features of DK2. You shouldn't bother unless you want a fun mantlepiece to show off to your friends as a collector of VR and to mess around with. It really is more like a proof of concept than anything like true VR.
DK2 is much better, but more like a super-alpha version of true VR. You can use it for actual VR experiences but its not going to be partically robust or great at it. Get it if you are a developer or you again are an enthusiast who's planning on buying everything VR and want it in your collection to show off.
If you want to play games for real, then there is absolutely no reason to get a dev kit. At all. Its good as a fun little enthusiast collector piece, for developing, and playing around in various cool VR tech demos. Nothing more. When it comes to actual VR games in the future it won't be supported and you'll just have to spend money next year getting the "real" rift.
The Crescent Bay prototype uses double-layered Fresnel lenses by the way.
alien: isolation is fucking awesome
y no rift support :(
I thought they demoed it with the Rift? Surely it's coming.

They made a tech demo, but made no comments on releasing it to the public. Maybe they're keeping it in cold storage until the consumer Rift comes along.

Reminds me of these old things. It was supposed to make your monitor look bigger by magnifying the image.

So I had my first VR experience with the DK2. There was a Nvidia booth at an expo I attended and they had it hooked to GTX 980 with the UE4 street demo.
Sadly, I was slightly disappointed. Expected the resolution to be a bit better (man, DK1 must've been horrible) and the fov was super awful, felt like looking through some sort of gasmask or something, but I think it was Nvidia's fault - they probably put the lens adjust on the very far setting and left it there. The experience was still very good, I might've been overhyped by /r/oculus and the Crescent Bay reports. The 3D and rotation tracking was awesome and I jumped a bit at the end, that robot was REALLY close!
as a first VR experience I can understand people criticizing the FOV for being a bit constricting, but knowing a lot of prior HMDs we should all count our blessings that this craze didn't latch onto stuff like the zeiss cinemizer, where it looks like you're just staring at your 28" monitor floating in space 7-8 feet away
