Rather than displaying images on the glasses or projecting them out into the world, Magic Leap's glasses reportedly project their image right onto their wearer's eyes — and apparently to some stunning effects. "It was incredibly natural and almost jarring — you’re in the room, and there’s a dragon flying around, it’s jaw-dropping and I couldn’t get the smile off of my face," Thomas Tull, CEO of Legendary Pictures, tells the Journal. Legendary also took part in this round of investment, alongside Qualcomm, Kleiner Perkins, Andreessen Horowitz, and Obvious Ventures, among others. Qualcomm's executive chairman, Paul Jacobs, is also joining Magic Leap's board.
What we know so far: -It doesn't use traditional "pixels" -It's being backed by Google and the same investors who backed the Rift -Retinal projection -Eye tracking
if it doesn't use traditional pixels I wonder what kind of a screen it would be using, a vector-based one?
if it doesn't use traditional pixels I wonder what kind of a screen it would be using, a vector-based one?
It probably converts a model or a screen into rays that projects on your eyes. Didn't read the whole article so I might be wrong.
Also, Oculus SDK 0.4.3 coming this week with "meaningful improvements".
Also, Oculus SDK 0.4.3 coming this week with "meaningful improvements".
Apperently yes meaningfull improvements but not yet fully fixed is from what ive gathered.
What's not "fully fixed"?
What's not "fully fixed"?
Judder issues with some configs. The black magic that makes Direct Mode work, etc.
How long can you play with one before your eyes hurt? I can imagine with a screen that close to your eyes would hurt after awhile
How long can you play with one before your eyes hurt? I can imagine with a screen that close to your eyes would hurt after awhile
your eyes are focusing on infinity, in theory there is less eye strain than looking at a monitor.
your eyes are focusing on infinity, in theory there is less eye strain than looking at a monitor.
What do you mean by infinity? sorry if this is a dumb question but I don't have an Oculus
What do you mean by infinity? sorry if this is a dumb question but I don't have an Oculus
eye directions are parallel, focus distance is infinity.
What do you mean by infinity? sorry if this is a dumb question but I don't have an Oculus
Hold your hand in front of your face. Now focus on that hand. Now focus on something very far away without moving your hand. That is what they're talking about. There's something in your face, but the 3D of it makes you focus on what is being perceived as far away. And also because of the Oculus and 3D effect, you don't have things go blurry on you.
The lenses make everything seem like they're far far away so your eyes focus as if you're looking at a distant mountain. So there is no eye strain of "looking at a monitor 30cm away"
Thanks for the clarification. That's pretty cool
My Dk2 just arrived! :D I really should have downloaded the software already though.
My Dk2 just arrived! :D I really should have downloaded the software already though.
What better way to kick it off than some Bioshock VR porn. http://www.zone-preview.hentaikey.com/files/JustOneDanceVRWindows1_0_1.zip Have your Rift in extended mode, main monitor but use the direct to rift .exe anyway. Make that your first experience :v:
man I'm glad I visit this thread at work [editline]e[/editline] man I should take up ridiculous porn sims as a line of work

For those who don't dare - It's a disappointment.
I almost want to click that, it just sounds so absolutely bizarre that I'm not really sure what it'd even be.
It's a very simple demo. Just an experiment the creator said.
Just got my rift! Any tips on the dxgi.dll issue? I get it whenever I try direct to rift.
Do you think it's worth ordering a DK2 now? I feel like once it gets here, a better one will come out. Obviously to dev with, not just to fuck about with.

[editline]23rd October 2014[/editline] Some more info on the Magic Leap AR glasses:
Multiple layers of such tiny mirrors would allow the display to produce the illusion of virtual objects at different distances. However, Magic Leap’s patent also claims that a single layer of the mirrors would be enough if they were formed from “magnetic liquid.” That would allow the mirrors to be reprogrammed using a magnetic field to rapidly display points at different depths fast enough to fool the eye, like the frames of an animation.

Another of Magic Leap’s patent filings says that cameras, infrared sensors, and ultrasonic sensors could be used to sense the environment around a person, and to recognize gestures. But Wetzstein says Magic Leap will likely need to make major breakthroughs in computer vision software for a wearable device to make sense of the world enough for very rich augmented reality. “They will require very powerful 3-D image recognition, running on your head-mounted display,” he says.
They seem to have managed to squeeze these thick Nvidia light field glasses into one thin layer sunglasses-style using some mysterious magnetic liquid.
Got my DK2 today. Having a boatload of fun with it. To those of you experiencing that cross-eyed issue in Alien Isolation, SET SSAO TO STANDARD. I pinpointed the cause of the problem, and having SSAO on HDAO causes the weird cross-eyed problem with the 3D stereoscopy.
Isn't HDAO a thing for AMD cards where HBAO is Nvidia? Or is that issue with AMD cards as well?

Got chance to have a go on a DK2 today, pretty impressive. Really can't wait for the consumer version now. Got some gnarly eye strain though, I guess it takes a minute to get the lenses adjusted right.
