I build PC's every day, because that's my job, and I still make silly mistakes like that all the time.
First PC build I did was using scrap PC parts from before the highschool threw them out. I think I shorted out the motherboard when I had my first attempt (Or it was bust from the start), and then I fried a CPU (Forgot to re-apply thermal paste).
On my current PC build I did 3 years ago, it went well without issues. And I'm going to do a new one / upgrade it in a few weeks.
Welp, Oculus officially made it.

My college got a dk2!
My college got a dk2!
Congrats! I've been bugging my compsci friend about checking if his department has one, but I think he's just getting irritated with me.
My college got a dk2!
Tomorrow I'm helping one of the profs at uni benchmark a PC with the new DK2 they got. If the frames are shit, he has the argument he needs to order a proper VR-capable rig for the department. The best workstations they have right now sports a Quadro K2000 (more or less like a Geforce GTX 650). I'm wondering if a demo like Windlands can achieve 75 fps on it...

My laptop's gtx 660M can't.
My laptop's gtx 660M can't.
My laptop has that card too, but because the HDMI output is connected to the other Intel GPU (Nvidia Optimus shizzle) I can't really use the Rift with it for anything, since it'd have to copy its framebuffer to the Intel GPU for outputting to the Rift (causing extra latency / judder / etc, Oculus hasn't figured out how to support it yet).
Luckily higher-end laptops seems to have video output directly connected to their dedicated GPU.

GTX Titan II coming.
That should be enough for the CV1, rite?

In SLI, maybe.
How are they doing the Titan this time? Is it going to be another CUDA-focused card, or is it going to be more gaming-oriented?

ofc it will. the 980 ti will be the gimped gaming version.

My laptop is one such, with no Optimus. The 660M simply can't Oculus effectively.

But the 780Ti wasn't gimped for its Titan. In fact, it actually scored higher in the benchmarks. It's my understanding that the Titan is built for GPU-Compute-based workstations rather than gaming PCs.

Indeed. Didn't stop people from spending massive disproportionate amounts of cash to buy them for bragging rights though.
holy fuck, 16nm is ridiculous
So how much will the 'consumer release' cost?

it had half the memory and 7 times lower double precision. therefore its a gimped titan, well it did have more cuda cores so its really a gimped titan black, but the titan still destroyed it in DP perf.
for anyone wondering why the Titan cards sold like hotcakes: if you look at the Quadro equivalent of the cards you can understand why the titan's were an absolute bargain for people who need compute power.
The k6000 and the titan black have the same perf (5.2Tflops SP and 1.7Tflops DP), the quadro has twice the memory (12GB) but costs 5x as much (£4000 vs £800). Anyone looking to buy a new rendering card would see the titan and jizz themselves.
Always found it funny that the £800 card was actually one of Nvidias best value cards.

Best guess is in the range of $300 to $400.

The GearVR will go on sale early next month. Over 60 titles are in development for it.

I'm not gonna buy a Note 4 just to try a higher-res DK1 though.
Even if I were due for an upgrade I wouldn't get a Note 4, those things are ridiculously overpriced.

This thing sort of confuses me... How will it deal with head movement along the roll axis? Horizontal and vertical movement would work, but any roll off the horizontal plane of the cameras would lose stereoscopic depth, wouldn't it?

GearVR has no positional tracking. You'll always be a "camera on a stick", quite literally.
