I would like to see the GS4's screen in the Rift but at the moment that screen is like > $200. I think down the road, OLED will be preferred because of the phenomenal black levels.
OLED's should have phenomenal switch times aswell.
Lets review someone else's review, oh wait we already did.
OLED's should have phenomenal switch times aswell.
which would be great. wonder if the switching rates are a large hurdle in the overall latency?
which would be great. wonder if the switching rates are a large hurdle in the overall latency?
well OLEDs can refresh at like 100,000hz so you are no longer limited by the screen having a 16.67ms minimum latency hit. So assuming you have a gpu that can render at 100,000fps, you would only have 0.01ms latency from the screen.
OLED's with the pixel density required for the rift would be astronomically expensive though lol
So basically back to the $200 S4 screen problem. Eh, I'd personally be fine with a regular LCD screen - if the price is right. The Rift is the first of it's kind so I have no expectations it will be perfect in every single regard.
the one thing I'm hoping for in screen tech is dark darks. Black on an LCD is still lit up, and makes low light details eye-strainingly difficult to look at without changing your gamma just to make them even brighter. It would be a miracle if they could get a good screen crammed into the oculus where the pixels actually dim/turn off, would make things far more realistic. Probably won't be a long while before something like that comes around, but one can dream. Maybe oculus will provide a high end model once the market really takes off and the demand proves it'd be worth it.
It's certainly something I expect in the future but if the Rift wants to stay affordable I can't see it happening.
With only vision in one eye... Will I ever enjoy this in its full glory? I don't think so :(
With only vision in one eye... Will I ever enjoy this in its full glory? I don't think so :(
it isn't just about the 3D vision, coupling your actual head movements into an environment that still encases your vision pretty fully is something far beyond what a screen can do. I'd say it's still well worth it in cases like yours.
You guys have to remember that consumer is still a bit far off. I'm pretty sure that in 1.5 years fullHD OLED displays will be more mainstream and will probably cost less. Samsung will continue using OLED, so the price will surely drop.
Going to stream GMod with the Rift in a second: http://www.twitch.tv/clavusaurus I have no idea what to expect. When I talked to Garry he didn't know either, he hadn't tried it yet. :v:
Fun!
Ok nvm Garry's Mod just crashes on the loading screen at the moment. Let's see if I can fix that first. [editline]28th May 2013[/editline] No dice so far. Can't get it to work. Understandable because from what I gathered from Garry, he just ported Valve's code and hadn't tested VR mode yet. We'll have to wait a bit longer. [editline]28th May 2013[/editline] Since Garry's Mod failed me I'm just going to stream me flying around in Outerra: http://www.twitch.tv/clavusaurus [editline]28th May 2013[/editline] Done streaming. Recording software had some nasty yellow / black flickering issue though. Didn't notice it until people complained about it in chat.

Let us know when you stream something again.
Damn, missed it. Let us know when you stream something again.
You should be able to see the recordings in the videos tab on the right. I'm not storing them for long term because of the artefacts, but they'll be around for a while.
yeah, what was up with the flashing? Were you experiencing that yourself or was it just the stream?
yeah, what was up with the flashing? Were you experiencing that yourself or was it just the stream?
Just the stream, I didn't notice until after my first session. Maybe it was due to the sequential recording of the webcam and game, not too sure. [editline]28th May 2013[/editline] On another note, I was quite pleasantly surprised by Outerra's take on porting its interface. You navigate it by looking around, so you still see the same amount of detail. It won't make navigating any faster, but I found it better than TF2's unreadable scaling.
OLEDs still have issues with severe burn in apparently which wouldn't be good for HUDs.
That only comes apparent after months of continuous use. My GS1 fascinate has the status bar burned in but only because the status bar is always up no matter what. Everything else is fine.
Oh boy my friends Oculus is being shipped I can't wait for him to go on vacation so I can steal it in the dead of night!
OLEDs still have issues with severe burn in apparently which wouldn't be good for HUDs.
I thought this wasn't the case anymore?
OLEDs still have issues with severe burn in apparently which wouldn't be good for HUDs.
Time for a new age of screensavers
Sweet. Got an email saying they're shipping mine. I am extremely excited.
Sweet. Got an email saying they're shipping mine. I am extremely excited.
When did you order yours?
When did you order yours?
I believe it was in March.
I believe it was in March.
This year? Wtf, i ordered mine "sun 28 oct 2012 14:57:59 CET (UTC+1)" and mine still hasn't been sent.
experimented with making anaglyph 3D images just now and thought whoa when the oculus gets released i can see like this ALL THE TIME WITHOUT THE COLORS FUCKING UP Man I'm so hype why can't it be finished already
This year? Wtf, i ordered mine "sun 28 oct 2012 14:57:59 CET (UTC+1)" and mine still hasn't been sent.
They batch them per destination. Now that they're starting on the post-Kickstarter orders, it's likely more batches are sent to the US first, then they do Europe / Asia / etc. [editline]29th May 2013[/editline] Sent Garry a few of my GMod crash dumps this afternoon, he sent out a delta patch through SteamPipe but it doesn't seem that GMod VR is working yet.
