"Home of the future" Isn't this what the 1960s wanted in the future?
"Home of the future" Isn't this what the 1960s wanted in the future?
And the 70s. And the 80s. And the 90s. And the 2000s. The connected home has always been a dream in the tech geek's zeitgeist. We're closer now than we've ever been.
Where do I find what keynotes will be held and when on the CES site?

Soooo... No news yet on cv1?
re 3DHead - so they've just built this helmet around an autostereoscopic screen like the one in the 3ds, and put another one in a huge ass controller that'll give you sore arms, and are calling it an "Oculus killer" at a thousand dollars retail price?
if that's seriously how big it is, that's ridiculous. also, it looks like it's aimed toward dumb parents that'll spend any amount of money for lil' johnny to make him stop crying. and cause it's more expensive, it must be better!
holy shit yes, im ordering a Oculus DK2 in about a few weeks.. Hopefully the shipping doesnt take too long becouse my thesis is all about it ..

Razer just announced their OSVR 'Hacker Dev Kit' VR headset at CES, set for a $199 launch in June. [t]http://puu.sh/e9eqd/e57c547bb9.jpg[/t] [t]http://puu.sh/e9erH/6b1be12d2a.jpg[/t]

I'm curious to as what screen they're using though.
5.5inch with the same res as the DK2, 1080x1920
Honestly, if you told me 10 years ago that 2015 would be the year we got mother-fuckin virtual reality headsets, I never would have believed you. I have yet to try one, as I'm holding out for consumer, I've told my brother about it, who loves video games as much as me, and he's a bit skeptical. So I have to ask you guys, coming from someone who hasn't seen one in person. Is it as awesome as I think it is?

But it's not something that magically makes games better. I'm sure you've heard it before but it is really up to game developers to create a compelling experience to make it worth it. I will say that I'm preordering the cv1 the second I'm able.
I've seen people's reactions - i've personally not tried any of the DKs, but like the poster above I am ordering the shit out of the CV1.
Anyone tried flight sims with the Rift? My dad is a huge fan of flight sims, he always wanted a 3 monitor setup but I'm thinking it should be better and cheaper with just the Rift
[–]Manoko 3 points 11 hours ago Anyone else really frustrated by the situation ? I mean, you'd expect Oculus to at least announce something at the CES of the year they will launch their first consumer product. Yet here we are, waiting for impressions on Crescent Bay prototypes. A lot of us have waited a long time for this CES to happen, and I can't speak for everyone but all I can say is that I am hugely disappointed. It makes no sense for a tech company launching their first product to not at least have a keynote on the CES of that year. permalink save report give gold reply [–]palmerluckey Founder, Oculus VR 48 points 8 hours ago It makes a lot less sense to do a keynote that is a waste of time and money for everyone. Won't stop the other companies from doing them, but count me out. When there is something to be announced, it will be announced - think hard about wanting announcements scheduled to major shows instead of when they are ready, because that philosophy, while common, leads to safer timelines, a lot more dead space, and showmanship as a replacement for real information. It has been hardly 3 months since Crescent Bay was first shown, and this is the first time it will be shown to the general public in any kind of volume. I am sorry you are disappointed, but what we are doing makes plenty of sense - it may not be obvious, but there is a method to the madness. Go home folks.
Palmer is so right, you have to admit when the time is right, they'll announce it

For the longest time I was very jaded and unimpressed with my friend's DK2. I'm a very technical minded person so I was always more interested in how it worked and how it could be used. I found the DK2 to be a very neat toy, but not something practical to be used in the games I play because of resolution limitations and other quirks that I couldn't have predicted. Elite is usually paraded as the current killer app because it's the closest to a fully featured game with good support and honestly I wouldn't play Elite for real with the DK2. I found it to be a great experience and very novel, but I never had that wow amazing life changing event that so many people seem to have. To me, the resolution problem just holds it back far too much for my tastes. Things are playable with the Rift, but not competitive. I will not be using a Rift as my primary gaming screen until I no longer feel like I would be so much more effective with a monitor and Track IR. That being said, the one-two punch that was racing games and Vox Machinae did convince me of the promise and potential future of VR and I am now super eagerly awaiting the CV1. When you boil it down, my major problem with the Oculus Rift and the thing stopping me from seeing it as more than just an expensive toy is the lack of resolution, which will be fixed with the CV1. At least, in theory. [editline]6th January 2015[/editline]
Anyone tried flight sims with the Rift? My dad is a huge fan of flight sims, he always wanted a 3 monitor setup but I'm thinking it should be better and cheaper with just the Rift
Flight sims are playable, but if you want to be effective you need a monitor and head tracking with priority to head tracking over multiple monitors. The resolution just isn't there to make your instruments readable and distant planes spottable. With the DK2 at least, it's fun to mess around with, but not a viable option if you want to play for real. One unexpected side effect I found of trying flight sims with the Rift is that keeping your head on a swivel is a lot more tiring than you'd think. With TrackIR, you really take for granted how easy it makes turning around to check your six or track a target that's above your canopy. With OR, while it is much more intuitive to track targets with the 1:1 head tracking, it also means you'll often be throwing your head around to weird angles that you normally wouldn't, and the weight of the device itself doesn't help matters. In addition, you lack a lot of peripheral vision, both because it's not there at all and what is there is often blurry, so you'll have to turn your head even more than you normally would to check your six. All of those problems will get better with the CV1. However, I won't be convinced that the OR is viable for flight sims like DCS until I try a CV1 myself. Resolution and pixel density are extremely important in flight sims. Much more so than in any other genre, and I have doubts that even at 1280x1440 per eye with super special optics, that the CV1 will be enough.
The booth is opening very soon. It's enormous.
I'm not feeling the enormity. Could you make a Unity Oculus CES simulator for me? [editline]6th January 2015[/editline] :v
Their booth is bigger than my house...
I'm not feeling the enormity. Could you make a Unity Oculus CES simulator for me? [editline]6th January 2015[/editline] :v
they should do their next press conference on a virtual stage
I'm not sure if I completely understand the Razer OSVR, but isn't that kind of a dick move towards Oculus? Or am I totally wrong?
http://www.shacknews.com/article/87633/ces-2015-tobii-eye-tracking-technology-interview Eye-tracking is real at customer price now, hopefully oculus picks up on this, wonder if CV1 will somehow include eye-tracking?

Some info: -The Crescent Bay at CES is upgraded with a new SDK and the 3D audio that Oculus bought a while back -There are 3 new scenes compared to the CB demos shown at Oculus Connect a few months back -The cublicles are now soundproof, so a lot more presence especially combined with the new audio -The new SDK with 3D audio will be announced later today (released? hopefully) http://www.theverge.com/2015/1/6/7504099/oculus-rift-audio-sdk-ces-2015
