Someone added oculus support to their 2d adventure game:

Three days left, ~75% of the way to their goal.
Have there been any 3d desktop applications? I don't know about anyone else but a version of windows that was rift based would be awesome.

This is as close as you'll get right now: http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=140&t=17191
I don't think VR will make you that much more productive at the moment, maybe in very specialized applications.

I think for me it would be counterproductive. I'm constantly looking down at pieces of papers and textbooks while working, and sometimes turning around to access other papers and books. Taking the sucker on and off would only get in the way.
You could have virtually infinite screens though.
You could have virtually infinite screens though.
really tiny pixelated screens that you'd have to shuffle around to see
one or two real monitors are more than enough. I work with three and at that point it's practically just for sake of leaving crap in view to look busier to people looking over your shoulder
The consumer version might have HD camera on it though, those might be useful.
I was thinking the other day about how cool it would be to write a plugin for kwin that took the input from the Oculus and used it to pan around your desktops, so instead of navigating around the virtual desktop one by one it becomes a 180° half sphere that you can just look around.
Probably completely impractical but it would be awesome.

If it has a full HD camera with no delay, then I'd never take that thing off of my head when home.
I don't care about cameras, I just want something I could replace my monitor.
I think we'll have to wait a few years and several Rift iterations before we have sufficient pixel density to replace monitors. You see a huge amount of detail in the centre of your vision. Due to the way displays (currently) work, even the parts you're not focussing on would have to be rendered in high detail. Think 4K, or higher:

To get playable framerates at that size, you'll have to enter the domain of high-end SLI / Crossfire graphics cards combinations.
And I've yet to hear about a 5" to 7" screen with that resolution. If the smartphone hardware vendors don't think it's a viable strategy to create those kind of displays for mobile, I don't think we'll see them used in the Rift either unless it becomes massively popular, allowing Oculus to fund the development of such screen tech.
Not for compositing your desktop, you'd need a fair bit of VRAM but if you're just browsing the web then even an Intel Ivy Bridge GPU should be able to drive that.

Hm that's true. And I guess you could still run games at a scaled resolution if your computer isn't up to it. So performance might not be that big of an issue.
Wow, does DVD have so low resolution? I had no idea.

Yep, those were invented before 720p was a thing.
Yo.

I've always thought that I'd been watching at least 720p when watching a DVD. :v:

Well its 720p wide. just not 720p high.
Apparently I got an email a few days ago, they must be shipping the batches after the Kickstarter. I should get it by monday or maybe tomorrow.

Not much longer now.
I got that message, but I didn't get a follow up email saying it had been shipped, even though I have the device now.
If I was to order one of these now, when would it be expected to ship? One of my co workers said that it would be a really cool final year project to get one of these and make something with it.
After I showed them the Google compass thing on maps where you move the phone around to change where you look, he said that would be cool to integrate with the Rift.
Really considering getting one now. I basically have a year to get one and make a project with just need to know how long I would be waiting right now
I've been hearing estimates of late august/early september for current orders, but that all depends on how they stack up the shipping as time goes on.
Yeah I saw on there site that next batch should be Augest, but I don't know if that means for people who order like now.
If I got mine in Augest/September I'd be cool with it.
Not too sure what to do, it only costs 275 euro to get it to Ireland. I would buy a consumer one anyway when it's out as they aren't too expensive.
For a final year computer science project do you think it would be cool to do something with the rift? I think it would be something unique that the marker would not have experienced before that could get me a good grade.

Make a game where you can just view Bullet's GW2 character in 3d. then we can just look at the butt. it'll be awesome?
I'd rather wait for Dev Kit v2.0 or consumer version that get a current dev kit, considering its going to be outdated once the new dev kit arrives later this year.
If I had one on hold right now I'd cancel my order personally and just re-order when Dev Kit 2.0 starts coming out.
