As somebody who does not yet have their prototype, what can I do to make things so that when it gets here, I can hit the ground running?
Install HL2 (+episodes) and TF2 again for VR mode. Download demos like Sixense Tuscany, First Law, Titans of Space (so a few posts above), Proton Pulse and whatever else looks interesting. Drivers like Vireio Perception and Vorpx that add Rift support to existing games require some fiddling and are far from great compared to native Rift-ready applications.
I tried this demo this afternoon (the video does no justice to the experience at all, but anyway):

That should have ended with a supermassive black hole coming in and engulfing everything.
Anybody heard of anything/anybody working on Rift with Blender?
Anybody heard of anything/anybody working on Rift with Blender?
I think it'd have some trouble fitting in the blender, but if you use a blendtec blender, I think it'd work fine if you got it down there.

1080p Rift being showcased at E3 - apparently makes a huge difference, and the "screen door" is pretty much gone.

sweet sweet progress, I wonder how it compares, and what exactly 'pretty much gone' means in terms of games where you have to pick out tiny things accurately
also ogod, here's hoping we don't get a lot of people who have/are waiting on their devkits whining that they want this one instead - they'll need to come to terms with the fact they bought a developer prototype
I wonder if you can upgrade the screen if you bought a dev kit. That would be heaven

The 1080p version uses a 5.6 inch screen and the 720p devkit uses a 7 inch screen. This is a good way to understand it:

As the devkit's optics were built with the 5 inch screen in mind (they had to change it at the last second for the 7 inchers due to availability issues), a lot of the devkit's screen is left unused, so in effect the devkit's visible resolution is something like 400-500 pixels across or w/e.
The 1080p Rift is able to use a lot more of the screen due to its smaller size (and the optics made for it), and has a lot more pixel density due to being 1080p. So it is in fact a much, much bigger buff in visuals than just the difference between 720 and 1080 in pixel count.

oh wow, that's a lot better than I expected, I didn't realise it was a smaller screen as well!
definitely going to be an insane improvement over the devkit then, though it's going to weigh a lot on how far they place the screen from the user's eyes (and of course, how they rework the optics)
it'd also weigh less and be a more compact unit overall, neat

Talking about the Oculus Rift while using Google Glass.
THE FUUUUTUUUUURE
I never thought of watching movies on the Rift. Sounds cool.
You could walk around in the movie too. That'd be neat.
I would've thought watching a movie on the Rift would cause motion sickness since you're not controlling the movement.

which is why they made a virtual movie theatre
it's literally watching a movie

Seems silly at first but like they said in the video you could sit around and hang out with friends from around the world
I'm pretty sure people already do this in secondlife
is there talk about a thirdlife ever being developed? A fresh start on that stuff would be pretty welcome, you'd get a lot more general users back in, especially with rift.
This is what next-gen consoles should've done instead of that useless social stuff. Just a regular movie theater session but with friends. I'm sure that could be big with netflix and anything similar.
Oh, for some reason my first thought was walking about in CG movies.
I remember mentioning how GMod Cinema might be a cool idea with the Rift. Interesting to see the Rift devs trying something similar.
Oh boy.
Sony Computer Entertainment head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida is a big Oculus Rift fan, it turns out. "We've got a couple of the development kits, and I tried it out and I love it," he told us in an interview this morning at E3 2013. Whether the PlayStation 4 will support it is another question. "No, it doesn't," Yoshida told us. Not yet, that is.
When we asked whether the company's planning on offering support in the future, he only offered a "No comment" with a big smile. The picture of the retail Oculus Rift is potentially a bit clearer now, especially given this week's addition of an HD version of the headset. We'll be sure to keep on Sony about Oculus support on the PlayStation 4 as the year goes on.
This is all so rad!
Oculus Rift for President 2016.

I was just thinking how perfect it would be for the PS4 to support this.
I can't see MS really getting in on it though, there's so much red tape involved with being a microsoft partner that its probably not worth it. In addition they've already invested tons into their Kinect and other stuff (like ilumiroom), and something like the OR pretty much completely invalidates most of that (at least for games). Though Kinect would be perfect for determining positional head and body tracking, allowing you to actually use your hands in the game world, which would be really nice..

I always thought it would be cool if microsoft made a netflix viewer where it would use kinect to track you sitting, and then put you in seats (as your avatar) Mystery Science Theater 3000 stye so you could watch movies with your friends.
