We just need Gmod to support it. Then you just play Gmod Cinema thing and feel like you're actually in a theater.
[editline]21st March 2013[/editline]
Actually, a dedicated app wouldn't be bad at all. Media Player Classic VR Theater or something, where you can pick a seat and watch a movie on a screen.
I recall garry posting in one of the other rift threads that he's waiting for a dev kit. Gmod should have support eventually.
I wonder if someone will try to make a movie that takes advantage of Rift. Like, the whole movie is just first person view.
This is kinda creepy because whenever I think of that, I get reminded of Cyberpunk 2077 thing, where people were addicted to something (I don't quite remember) that allows you to experience someones memory and all the feelings associated with it.
Getting there...
Read Rant by Chuck Palahniuk, there's a similar idea called where memories are recorded by an implant and able to be outcoded to a computer so other people can enjoy them, but there's also an aspect of artistry as there's "editors" for these memories who experience them and put over different layers of feeling over other memories, for instance one of the examples is experiencing a rave on ecstasy but then the editor did acid while doing it, so you get a mix of both feelings, and there's more to it than that.
the idea's out there in a bunch of places and is wildly interesting.
Well well look what we have here. Some kind of new motion system that measures your muscle's electricity to do its shit. Whatcha think?
Getting a rift and making a movie theater would be such a waste of the Rift and ruin the quality of the movie. Ill stick to my 1080p monitor or projector for movies.
Not for 3D movies / blurays.
Anyways I wish I had the money for the dev kit and final release but alas I don't. Hopefully it will be out this year :(

That name alone is something to be amazed about. It fits perfectly to the game itself and what it's supposed to do.
And I'm still debating with my friends on how much it could cost in the future. I'm sticking with $225. Has anyone else an idea about the price?
i really want a dev kit but the consumer rift will be superior as well as probably cheaper so I'm going to have to end up waiting for that or else i can see myself buying the consumer rift when it comes out too...

I don't think it will be too much off 300 $, especially as the screens in the consumer one are going to be higher resolution I don't see it getting cheaper :v:
Rift mentioned on nvidia's blog, they apparently won some award from them together with 4 other companies.

Devs of Outerra have ordered a Rift dev kit and plan to support it. Awesome.
Update #25 is out. Full UDK support announced, Hawken w/Rift is being demonstrated at GDC.

A few of the optimizations included in the Oculus - Unreal Engine integration:
- Added roll and z-depth to shaders
- Optimized low latency VR rendering - sensor update on the render thread, disabling GPU buffering and adding full scene super sampling (1.5-2x)
- Made UI and videoes work with head tracking and z-depth
- Players can now head-look during Matinee sequences
- Added console commands and config settings for all parameters
I'm still really torn on getting one. It's a lot of money, but I'm not sure the price is going to go down. Is there a deadline for ordering the dev kits?

Yes.
Also it's incredibly likely that the consumer version will be cheaper / better.
Think about it this way: Oculus needs to pay for a small amount of materials / assembly so it doesn't get a discount for bulk orders.
One hell of a wait if you are just deciding to get a kit now, a lot of folks have waiting almost a year for theirs, since they were originally supposed to come out last December. I know a guy who ordered a rift the beginning of March, and when he checked his order he was something like 50 thousand. And Oculus expects to ship about 1,500 kits a week. If you get it now you're earliest bet is probably June, but highly unlikely.

Unless you're making a game or are in testing for a game that will support it, it's probably best to save your money for right now.

Are you a member of the MTBS Forums? It's basically a giant 3DVR site that allows people to bounce ideas and share their projects with each other, it's where Palmer started his Rift design and where he took off. Has everything you need to know about Oculus as it happens. I'd read through it if you haven't already.
Imagine playing XCOM with the Rift.
The cinematic scenes would be really intense.

The first 1-2 numbers (not sure how many) of the order number are the date, the rest are the order #. So if it was like 52750 it means he was #2750, etc.

there are a million games I'd love to play with the Rift. Most are simulators.
GDC reports are starting to pop in.
To play Hawken is to get a glimpse of a decades-old promise in gaming. This, you realize, is immersion – anything else pales in comparison. If you need to look to your left, you look to your left. You look behind you and you see the back of your cockpit. You feel like a small, squishy human empowered by his access to a flying rocket launcher.

We also took a drive in a demo that the Rift developers created using the Unity Engine and its built-in assets. The driving mechanics were rough, but even a bumpy road is a credible way to show off the device's capabilities. After I drove into a guard rail and began backing up, there was a moment — fleeting, but a genuine and surprising moment — when I stopped thinking like I was playing a game. I turned my head to look back 180 degrees through the rear window and had to stifle the urge to wrap my right arm over my passenger side seat, which didn't exist in the real world.

The Oculus Rift hardware does what it's asked to do through your movement — an impressive feat to behold — but it's also clear that this is the first version, as advertised. For a device designed to create immersion, 720p feels like a bare minimum resolution. 1080p would be a welcome addition, and it sounds like Oculus VR is experimenting with it. But the more resolution the device demands, the the more taxing it will be on the system.
Good point:
Seems like there is a need for some type of generic software to adapt players gradually to VR...a decompression chamber for reality if you will.
Well then if that is correct, everyone should get theirs by the end of May.

I'm looking forward to certain GMod game modes. Imagine giant NPC wars on Bigcity skyscrapers, or imagine trying some of the more mundane gamemodes. That cinema gamemode where you go into a virtual movie theater with friends might be quite a trip in VR.

Is there any mod that makes voices from mics come from that player, and would get fainter the farther others get from the source. That would be nice for the cinema, or for RPing.

No mod required for that I think.

Yeah. Flight Simulator, Falcon 4.0, and Train Simulator would all be super intense with the Rift.

I should note Mumble has positional audio support for a lot of games
Scary games. Only reason I'm getting the Oculus.
The Oculus Rift is the future of gaming.
Something I've wanted since I was a little boy, hell I even remember asking Santa, for a realistic virtual reality helmet..
