Why was he banging fiddy cent?
Damn, DCS would be so awesome with OR and TrackIR
They recently mentioned that they have cracked the issue of latency, by completely eliminating it "hardware-side" for the consumer version. OLEDs are known to have ultra-fast response times so it might very well be that!
Oleds will be doubly awesome because we also get to have actually dark, off pixels instead of simulated black pixels on a traditional screen. Infinite contrast ho!
Can oleds be done in a 1080p screen though? I thought it wasn't quite there yet considering the whole thing with each OLED needing to be its own pixel, and when you started requiring higher pixel densities with OLED it made the price exponentually increase thanks to something called a shadow mask or something
Though that might have been only why we've not seen OLED's be big monitors yet rather than small phones
Also IIRC the latency issues weren't because of the screen, but because of needing to do the headtracking and such without any delay at all.

Having to wait for pixels to change increases the latency.

Wouldn't everyone, given the chance?

Well the Galaxy S4 has a 1080p OLED screen in it, but it's pentile so it's not true 1080p. This might be very important when we're dealing with something that is magnified and 3 inches in front of your face so the answer is yes and no.

How much would an OLED screen raise the price of the Rift? Assuming $350 (just to be safe) is the baseline, how far would it go from there?

AFAIK, LED screens aren't that much more to make compared to LCD.
AFAIK, LED screens aren't that much more to make compared to LCD.
You don't really know what OLED is, right?

Right. Quick research proved me wrong. So, yeah... I would now expect some sort of price jump....
The reference point could be integrated in the control box itself, that thing is not supposed to be moved anyway.
Good point, they can put some basic magnetic sensor in the control box to determine where the rift is similar to the tech used in the razer hydra.

So I'm guessing with that sort of price, unless they're somehow able to buy it cheap in bulk, if OLED is involved with the Rift it will be optional, so you'd be able to buy either a cheaper version or a more expensive version (which would have OLED as one of its features).
I'm just hoping it stays below $500.
I'm sure it'll cost $349. Remember my post and we'll see next year.
Here's hoping.
Luckey has said repeatedly that he wants to keep the price close to $300 or decrease it if possible.
No shipping info, but if I put my order number and search UPS by reference, and it does show a delivery enroute to Ft Worth (Which I live outside of by 15 minutes). Not sure if it generalizes areas instead of putting specific towns on a search.
It lists it at 8 pounds which sounds consistent to the 4kg listed by others, but it was shipped into the US and is coming from Warwick, Rhode Island...... Maybe they accidentally shipped mine somewhere else or shipped it from a warehouse/factory?
I guess I will find out tmrw if this is it.
[sp]You can tell im desperate for info now.[/sp]

Turned out the package from UPS that happens to match my order number, was shipped to my area, and weighs the same as everyone else's kit was not mine or a rift.
Instead I finally got my shipping info and it will be here Wednesday from fedex lol.

I found the perfect thing to use Rift for.
Some independent companies exhibited the Devkit at Berlin consumer electronics expo IFA last week. I saw Intel and c't - Germany's (and Europe's) largest computer magazine - show off the Riftcoaster. The latter even put people in an actual rollercoaster cart and had staff fan "wind" in their faces at the appropriate parts (sick bastards). Only thing that was missing was a scream-cam.
The STEM System (from the company behind the Razer Hydra) Kickstarter is live:

Probably one of the best peripherals to go along with the Rift.
[editline]12th September 2013[/editline]
Just pledged for an early-bird three-tracker bundle. Apparently it'll probably cost an additional $50 later to ship to Europe, but that isn't too bad.

Violent Motion Sickness Simulator.
Make a consumer version of one these babies to go with it:
